Luna's Duty and Lament

Majestic and Her Majesty

The skies above Equestria were always blue, always so-, so calming. The ponies were always so happy. The Earth ponies with their food, happily growing and selling and conversing, satisfied with the lives that they lead. The unicorns, with their magic, their spells, and their ever-so-incredible abilities to perform magic at will, if their horns could handle it. And the pegusai, the happiest of all, with their wings, they could soar, and dive and swoop, and they never had to even touch the ground, so long as their weather duties were fulfilled. They lived on their magnificent houses of pure cloud and made their own statues and luxuries, and never were dissatisfied with their abilities. It made Celestia proud and content, but Luna just let out a sigh.

“What's wrong, little sister?”

“Me. I am the Princess Luna, yet my people are happier than I, and they have much more fun than I, and their lives are worth so much more than mine.”

“Now, now, Luna, don't get so upset, you're my little sister, the immortal, wonderful Luna.”

“Thank-you, Celestia, but really, I'm just not content right now. That's all.”

“Well, okay, if there's ever a problem, let me know and we shall solve it.” Celestia comforted her sister.

Luna returned to her balcony, in her personal bedroom where she slept the days through. The balcony was actually a set of spiraled stairs that led out to her widowpony's watch. This was also the spot by which she left her royal home each evening to create night for all of Equestria. Before she flapped her gorgeous, silky, serene black wings, she looked down to the house with a candle still lit. It was in the center of Canterlot, and it was easy to miss, but not for Luna.

She took off, rose in her mouth, and dropped it onto the home's roof with grace and ease. As it floated down on its purple-looking pedals in the last of the sun's evening glow, she could remember what happened there. So many years ago. A tear was brought to her eye. Nay, she mustn’t succumb to such a tear. Instead, she flapped her wings harder, to rid herself of these thoughts. Unsuccessful, as usual, she looked through her blurry vision, up into the now-forming stars. Up, into the growing night. Her horn lit up for a final time, and she disappeared into a purple cloud above.

As she turned the day into night, her mind thought only of the epic that she went through, and the dreams that have haunted her ever since. She wanted nothing to do with it any longer, but her soul dragged for her to do so. Her heart ached, and as soon as the sun was completely gone, and the moon
had returned to the skies, she lost her way, and, upon crashing down into the valley known as Ponyville, fell into a deep sleep.
