//------------------------------// // Dr. Kohler's Final Momento // Story: The Origins of the Pegasus Device // by Codexwriter476 //------------------------------// Dr. Kohler, his once fine brown mane turning white, was alone in his office within the Factory. The aging stallion had overseen the murder of thousands, and yet he felt no remorse, no sorrow; as did the workers within the Rainbow department who worked the Device. He had instructed new recruits on how the device worked, gave them the oppertunity to start the aging device. The blood from the screws were not to be washed, as a reminder of its history, and would be the last thing any pegasi destined for the machine would see. His sanity had drained away each day, forced to relive the day the machine first ran. He could still see his former assistant; his son, fall into the machine followed by Mr. Gale. Tears started to form when he thought of the sweet filly he raised and cared for, hidden away from the horrors by means of Amnesia treatments and a loving family. He couldn't keep this up forever, and one of these days he'd be forced to place her into the machine; his last connection to reality. A picture of the young filly sat on the right corner of his desk, facing him; reminding him of what life was before all of this. With a paper and pen, he began to jot down his final minutes. 'All my life, since I was young, I've wanted to help ponies in any way I could. My dream soon became a nightmare sixty years ago when I was forced to help create the Rainbow Factory, to kill ponies in order to keep up with production of rainbows. Damn Celestia for the countless I've seen being tossed into the dreaded machine, along with those who made me responsible for such a thing. I'm the last of the original group who fed the machine, with a new generation being forced to take our place. Dr. Atmosphere, the new Weather Factory manager, has decided to allow one of the weather mares from Ponyville to supervise the production and is sending her to me for 'training'.' He wrote. He couldn't imagine who would be coming from Ponyville to replace him, just as their was a knock on the door. He placed the pen down and looked up. "Come in." He said. The door opened and standing in the frame was a cyan colored pegasus with a rainbow mane and tail. Her magenta eyes glowed like rubies. "Hey, Name's Rainbow Dash. Perhaps you heard of me?" The pegasus said confidently. Kohler couldn't believe it. No, he didn't want to believe it. They had brought Sky Dash's child to take his place, to feed more young pegasi to the device. He had promised her to never get Rainbow involved on her dying bed, and now he had failed. "Yes, I have. You performed quite well at the Young Flyer's Competition last year. Your 'Sonic Rainboom', as you called it, was the reason why they brought you here?" Kohler inquired. "Heck yeah. So, do you have a place for me? They said I could find a position here in the Rainbow Factory." She replied, excitement in her voice. Her fate was sealed, as was his. Getting out of the chair, he walked past Rainbow Dash and closed the door, then faced her. "Tell me, Rainbow Dash, How much do you know about the Pegasus Device?" Kohler asked.
