Wisdom and Chaos

Enough

When you live forever you must see everyone go while you stay there forever. Discord knew that very well. In his thousand and three hundred years of life he had seen so many things, so many ponies and creatures. But all ponies and creatures die sooner or later. That was the curse that any immortal creature received when born and it was already leaving him tired.

Soon after all events with Tirek, Discord noticed how he did not deserve any friendship from the Elements of Harmony. But Fluttershy cried, asked him to stay and told him something he never expected somepony to tell: “Stay, because… Eep… I… I… Love you!”

But Discord replied in a bitter voice, “Ponies like you can’t like monsters like me,” and he just left, flying from Twilight’s castle, without saying another word. As he left he let out a few tears, the truest of his life. Before going he heard the beginning of the cry of Fluttershy, which left his heart shattered.

Since that day, he lived in the icy caves of the Frozen North. He survived only with hot chocolate and cotton candy; as a wise Draconequus had taught him. But the cold bothered him, and just imagining how he could never go back to Ponyville or Canterlot terrified him.

He was tired being the Lord of Chaos. It was fun, it was easy and it was eternal. That was it. Eternal. And Discord was tired of being eternal, tired of sitting in the middle of that cave, with nopony else, no friends, unable to annoy someone with his chaos, unable to have tea with Fluttershy and without any laughing. His eternal life was thus now, and all because he had betrayed his friends.

An echo caused by the wind came from the cave entrance. Discord was lying there with his head between his paw and talon, a sad look on his face, rethinking everything. He thought about it every day, with Fluttershy's voice echoing in his head. Being there forever without any more reason to live.

Enough!

Discord cried to himself in his head.

Promptly, he got up and went out of the cave. His fur and his hair bobbed in the icy air. Discord squinted, looking at the misty landscape of the Frozen Mountains then spread his wings and flew, going towards Everfree Forest. He would find a way to stop it, no matter what.

And he knew what could end this once per all.

The environment of the Everfree Forest, from above, was really calm. Only with the echoes of various animals that lived there. Discord had a tired face with dark circles, and then he looked to the side and saw a small town. It was Ponyville. A tear rolled down his face as he remembered Fluttershy, but the Lord of Chaos held back his tears, he should forget all that.

Not wanting to look at the city, Discord went down to the forest, landing on the dark, green lawn. Some carnivorous plants of varying sizes were there. He heard the sounds of deer, roars of Manticores and birds singing. While walking to his destination, Discord stopped and fumbled his ears, listening to a bush move.

“Who is there?! Show yourself for the Lord of Chaos!” Discord yelled looking to the sides, hearing noises of feet hitting the ground. “Show yourself!”

Then an animal came out of the trees. It was a Draconequus! Both his legs were of a white tiger, his torso was similar to an owl, but bigger. His hair white, just like his beard. His head was like that of Discord's, but dark gray, with a lion’s tail. His eyes were dark blue with a natural background like the pony eyes. And he had two horns of a goat.

The Draconequus flashed a smile at Discord, and then started walking around his body, watching intently.

“Who are you? What you want with me?” Discord did not come out of there; he looked with a confused and angry face.

“I am the Draconequus of Wisdom, Wise,” Wise stopped and sat, watching Discord blink ten times before making any move.

“And you dare to go the way of the Lord of Chaos?”

“Tsk, tsk… Discord, I know you. And I know what you want right now,” Wise said without taking the eyes out of Discord, who raised an eyebrow in confusion.

“You don’t know me!” Discord was so tired that he did not cry out somehow.
Even he realized how all his chaotic grace was gone, no more wanting to laugh. He just wanted to get to his destination and be over with it.

“I know you very well, Discord. And I can give you what you want or show you something important that can make you give up continuing to go to Zecora’s house,” Wise stood up and turned around, intending to get in through the trees again. "It's your choice," he said without even looking back.

“So you think you can convince me? The Lord of Chaos? Prove it, show me! I have nothing to lose now, so go on!” He said, approaching over Wise.

“Follow me,” Wise said then Discord obeyed him, following him. Then he started running, thus Discord did the same. Then he stopped, causing Discord to collide with the guy's back, making Wise look back and shake his head; he then snapped his fingers and everything went black for both.

Black was taken by a scene, the scene of Discord liberating for a second time, when he was ‘reformed’ by Fluttershy. Discord was there, like a ghost watching the scene. Beside him, the Draconequus of Wisdom looked at him, trying to see if his expression showed a trace of understanding.

No, he just stood there, with only a tear rolling down his face.

The scene shifted to the end of his reform, when he admitted that friendship was magic and Fluttershy praised him. And one more tear rolled on Discord’s face.

“You see?” Wise asked.

“Wha-What?” asked Discord, confused, looking at the other with teary eyes.

“You are important, for everypony and creature. But you don’t see that…” Wise returned to observe the scene. He had a puzzled face, seeing how the Lord of Chaos interacted with the canary-colored pony. “You loved her. And she loves you.”

“She doesn’t love me, I am a monster! You don’t understand, because you're a good Draconequus…” His ears lowered with sorrow.

“I must tell you my friend, I know everything. I am the wisest animal of this world, and I know she loves you,” Wise snapped his fingers, causing the scene to change itself. Now they were in front of what had taken Discord there.

“Please, don’t show me that again, I…” Discord turned away, not wanting to cry.

“Discord, you're important, I already said that few seconds ago.”

“I'm not!” He shouted directly at Wise.

“You mean it's not you that stabilizes Equestria? That does not allow this to be utopia?” he promptly replied, casting a negative look at Discord.

“I…”

“That is what I thought…” Wise sighed “Come on, we're going back.”

Discord and Wise were back in the forest in a snap. Discord sighed, thinking of what Wise had said.

“Discord, can you not see? She loves you; Equestria depends on you to stop it turning into a utopia. Still want to go after the potion?” Wise asked with a serious face, sitting in front of Discord on the lawn.

“I…”

But what if he is lying? If Fluttershy hates you? And all Ponyville hates you? Come on, Discord, you're the Lord of Chaos, you don’t need to be afraid of anything. Because you… You have anything to lose.

“Or do you want me to take your immortality, and be over with your life and all that suffering?” Wise asked, staring at him.

“I… Have anything to lose, so… I… I will stay, and…”

“Go after what you really want,” Wise completed.

“Did you read my mind? But how…?” Discord raised an eyebrow. Wise stood and smiled proudly.

“Just go. Go after the pony you really want.”

Discord said nothing more, just stretched his wings and flew towards Ponyville. He didn't care if the ponies and the pony were to reject him, he didn't care about anything. He had nothing, but he could have. And now he knew he had a purpose to live. He smiled and continued flying to the little city, but before he heard a cry from Wise:

“Remember that everyone has a purpose in life, just need to figure out what it is!”
