The Night Lasts Forever

What the Future Holds

“Alright, Twilight I need you to spin that wheel there,” Doctor Hooves pointed out, pounding on a couple of buttons himself while running around the main console.

Without asking how much to spin it, Twilight gripped the handle with her teeth and spun the contraption freely. When the wheel started to slow down, Doctor Hooves picked up a hammer with his teeth and smashed it into a piece of metal near the only monitor in the TARDIS. The wheel instantly stopped and the entire ship started to rumble as we traveled through the fabric of time itself.

We stumbled around a bit, Twilight completely falling over herself, until the ship sat still. Having what must have been months of practice, I managed to keep my balance, but It still amazed me that the ship was in perfect condition despite the abuse that the doctor did to it before every trip. He loved the ship like it was his wife though, something I refused to accept until it was too late. I was just trying to save Twilight from the same pain I went through. She may be harder to defeat than Nightmare Moon, though as her studies on magic extend far beyond the reaches of mine.

“And here we are!” Doctor Whooves proclaimed picking up his sonic screwdriver and turning the monitor towards us.

“We’re now twenty years into the projected future without Twilight. Same spot that we left from actually.”

“Doctor, wouldn’t that mean that we’re still in my room?” I asked, as a thought crossed my mind.

“Doctor!” I heard my voice proclaim from outside the TARDIS.

“Ah,” the Doctor started, realizing the reasoning behind my question, “That may be a bit of a hindrance in our mission.”

“I think we might be able to make this situation a little better if I went out first,” I told the Doctor as I heard myself screaming to leave from outside. "I would know how to calm myself down better than you or Twilight.”

“Then go right ahead Luna,” the Doctor said, before turning to Twilight adding “and before you ask Twilight, no, the whole meeting yourself won’t break time and space, granted you only meet your future self.”

Twilight shut her open mouth and stood there with a look of shock on her face, as if the Doctor had read her mind. I shook my head as I remembered how many times he had done that to me before I walked up to the wooden doors of the TARDIS. Lifting up a hoof, I pushed the door open and stuck my head out.

“Hello Luna, I’m an old friend of yours,” I said, stepping out to see myself twenty years older. I looked exactly the same as I did now, except I could see a sadness in my future self’s eyes, despite her look of surprise. “I’m you, from the past, and the Doctor here has brought a friend along.”

My future self just laid on her bed with a shocked expression as I walked back into the TARDIS to motion for the Doctor and Twilight to come out with me. I stepped out first to see my future self still was staring at me open-jawed. That look of surprise quickly changed into a scowl when the Doctor stepped out behind me. I shared her anger, but I knew that he was my only chance at showing Twilight how much Equestria needed her.

Then Twilight stepped out of the TARDIS, and my future self jumped out of the bed and ran up to Twilight, nearly engulfing her in a bear hug. The Doctor and I looked at each other with surprised faces before my future self started sobbing, “Oh Celestia, Twilight! I haven’t seen you in Twenty years! I’ve missed you so much!”

Twilight looked over at me and with a smile said to both of us, “I didn’t realize you cared for me that much.” I blushed and turned my head away, realizing that my future self had just revealed my true feelings for her.

After a few awkward seconds, my future self let go of Twilight, and I spoke up, “We’ve come here to show Twilight what a future without the Element of Magic is like.”

“Yes,” my future self replied solemnly, “Equestria hasn’t fared well since your disappearance twenty years ago. If you want, I can show you around the place.”

I could tell that Twilight had noticed the gave tone in her voice, and so I spoke up for her, “That would probably be for the best. Why don’t we visit her friends?”

“Or what remains of them…” future me mumbled. “Meet me at Sugarcube Corner,” future Luna told us as she teleported herself away.
“This may sting a little bit, Doctor,” Twilight said as she charged up her horn. As soon as I heard the distinct pop of teleportation, I channeled energy into my horn and zapped myself to in front of Sugarcube Corner.

As I opened my eyes to see the familiar restaurant that I had just recently visited, I saw my future self knock on the door. After a few seconds of nothing, she pushed the door open and went into the restaurant, motioning for us to follow. I immediately went inside after her, and Twilight followed me after checking to see that the Doctor was ok. Twilight shut the door, and future me provided a faint light with her glowing horn. I did the same, followed by Twilight, as all the doors and windows were boarded up.

The place looked as if it had been abandoned for years. A layer of dust had gathered on the floor from disuse. Twilight scraped a hoof along the ground, noticing the dust formation and asking, “How long has this been like this?”

“Three years ago, the Cakes left with their Twins,” my future self replied. “They left after the incident.”

“What incident?” Twilight worriedly asked her eyes darting around the room for clues.

“Follow me, and I’ll show you,” Future Luna told her, “Her room hasn’t been touched since then. She climbed up a flight of stairs and turned to one of the three doors. She opened it up and revealed all the terrible glory that used to be Pinkie Pie’s room.

I had never visited this room before, but the wall screamed out the pain and torture that poor soul had to have gone through. The walls and ceiling were covered with messages and words like “Die, Twilight” and “No more friends. No more parties.” There were items scattered around the room. Pictures of Twilight were covering the walls with words scrawled in marker. Vulgar swear words were written across Twilight’s face in many of the pictures. A few of the pictures were shattered and there was a pile of ash in a metal basket where something was burned.

While Twilight gaped at the scene in front of her, my future self started explaining, “They found her body hanging outside on a noose. The theory is that she drove herself insane after all her friends split apart. I don’t think you realize how much you affect you friends, Twilight.” Twilight just shook her head, taking in all of it while the Doctor stared stone-faced into space. He had seen this so many times, but I don’t think he ever got used to it. Twilight started crying, and buried her head into my shoulder.

After all, she had just been told that she was the reason Pinkie had committed suicide.
