The Lost Element

1: It Begins

It was a beautiful day in Ponyville. Celestia roes the sun and Rainbow Dash woke up early to clear the sky of clouds. Twilight woke to Spike dropping a stack of books on his way to put them back on their shelves. "Spike! What are you doing?" She cried, using her magic to lift Spike from the mountain of toppled books.

"Cleaning up! This place is a mess!" Spike said looking around at the books scattered all over the floor.

"This place was fine before you started rearranging. Why didn't you wake me? I could've helped!" Twilight said kindly.

"You were sleeping and I didn't want to wake-" Spike stopped mid-sentence. He put his claws to his mouth and belched out a blast of green fire. A tightly furled scroll fluttered down among the flames. Twilight grabbed it from the air with her magic and read it aloud.

"Your presence is required by Princess Celestia in Canterlot as soon as you possibly can. The presence of Applejack, Fluttershy, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie and Spike are also required. It is requested that you arrive as soon as possible on account of a national emergency. Kindest Regards, Princess Celestia." Twilight closed the scroll and quickly galloped out the door.

"Wait, we're going right now?" Spike called as he scampered along behind her.

"Of course! When Princess Celestia calls, you answer!" Twilight said. The sound of beating wings came from overhead.

"Twilight! Where are you going?" Rainbow Dash said, doing the back stroke through the air above them.

"Dash! Can you please go get Applejack and Fluttershy and tell them to meet me, Rarity, Pinkie Pie and Spike down at the train station?" Twilight said, still running as fast as she could.

"Sure! No prob!" Rainbow Dash said, zooming across the sky, leaving a rainbow shining in her wake.

"Twilight, Darling! What ever is the matter!?" Cried Rarity as Twilight literally shoved them onto a train as soon as they arrived at the train station.

"There... is... a... national... emergency!" Twilight explained between pants. "Princess... Celestia... said."

"OOOHH! YAY! I LOVE NATIONAL EMERGENCIES! I BET IT'S AN EMERGENCY PARTY!!!!!" Pinkie Pie said. Then she made confetti fall from the ceiling and blew a balloon up in Applejack's face.

"No, Pinkie. I don't think it's an emergency party." Applejack said rolling her eyes. Pinkie Pie let her balloon go, so that it went flying around the train car, sputtering all the way.

"We don't know what it is," said Spike. "We just know that it's big and it's happening right now." They all sat in a nervous silence, except for Pinkie Pie, who kept blowing up and letting go of her balloon, until they arrived at Canterlot. Princess Celestia was waiting at the gates for them to arrive.

"Good. You're here. We need to leave right away." Celestia said, her voice dripping with worry. They rode off into the country side not far from Canterlot. "There was a mighty explosion here a few hours ago. I sent a few guards to check it out but they haven't returned. I hope you all brought your elements?" Celestia asked them as they ran. Twilight looked at the others nervously. "You didn't bring them?!" Celestia asked, starting to panic.

"Sorry!" Twilight said, pleading. "We were in such a hurry to get here we forgot!" Then, Celestia came to a sudden halt. They were at the edge of a large crater. It was ginormous, a brown, dusty blemish in the green landscape.

"Stay back." Celestia warned. The others nodded and stepped closer to the edge, just enough to see down to the bottom. There was a strange mist hovering near the hole's bottom. It seemed to seal off whatever was down there from escaping. Celestia flapped her wings and flew just above the mist. It had a sickly sweet scent, and it made Celestia feel slightly drowsy, but she shook off the feeling. Her horn lit up with yellow magic as she fought to clear the bottom of the pit from the mist. It took several minutes of concentration, but soon the crater was clear of the purple mist. Celestia placed her hooves on the dirt and inched closer to the body lying, seemingly asleep on the ground. The mass stirred and rose it's head to look up at Celestia. Celestia's face filled with surprise and disbelief. "Mellie?" She whispered.

"Tia?" The pony asked, quietly, in equal disbelief.
