The Fate of a Man

The End

“Fluttershy?” a hesitant voice called. Applejack peeked her head around the door to Fluttershy's room. If it were any other pony, she might have expected the room to be in ruins. Instead, everything seemed to be intact, except for one vase lying on its side.

“Fluttershy?” Applejack repeated, “Are you in here sugar cube?” The orange mare heard a stirring from the bed, and saw a yellow hoof as Fluttershy rolled over.

“She must be asleep,” Applejack lowered her voice this time, “'bout time she did, poor filly.” She turned and left the room, sighing as she walked away. It had been a long morning, and things were only just starting to calm down. The farm pony shook her head, recalling the events of the morning as she had been told.

Softly and shakily Fluttershy said, “Michael is dead.”

Celestia's eyes managed to widen even further. She opened and closed her mouth a few times, seemingly at a loss for words.

“I believe,” Discord said, walking forward, “The answer you're looking for is 'I mean, he is no longer living. He is deceased. Michael Greenfield has gone off to that big green field in the sky, or whatever you ponies consider and afterlife.”

The princess's eyes focused on Discord, narrowing into a cold glare. “Discord,” she hissed, “If you had anything to do with this, being turned back to stone will be the least of your worries.”

“Oh, come now Celestia, we both know you're too kind to be making such threats. And over someone who isn't even a pony? Why, it's almost as if he was more important that you're letting on.” Discord managed to twist Michael's features into an eerie grin, an expression normally impossible on a human face. That fact, of course, meant little to the avatar of chaos.

“I care for all of my subjects equally, Discord.” Celestia did her best to remain calm in the face of one of her greatest enemies, “And Michael Greenfield was one of them.”

“Six of one and half a dozen of the other, Celestia.” Discord seemed to pause after speaking, “My my, I seem to have retained some of his memories.” Discord looked like a child in a toy store, “Oh, you would not believe some of the things he's got in here.”

“Discord!” Celestia scolded, “Leave his memories alone!”

“There's just so much in here though! You wouldn't believe some of the things these humans can do!” Discord cackled, before materializing a metal cylinder that fit comfortably in his hand. “Oh, the fiction these humans have, they've come up with so many amazing things. And so many of those things are weapons!”

All of the ponies present understood the implication of his sentence. Whatever it was that Discord was holding, it wasn't going to be good for them. Before he could use it, Celestia took the initiative and sent a bolt of blazing magic at him. Before it reached the possessed human, however, a red rod of light appeared in front of it and bounced the magic back and up, away from Discord.

“Now now, you can't take my new toys away from me that easily!” Discord twirled the light saber around in his hand a few times, getting a feel for the weapon. He looked at the princess and the two pegasi, and noticed that they seemed more relaxed than he liked. Sure, they were tense, but they weren't tense enough. He figured that he would just have to fix that.

“You ponies don't seem to understand what I can do with this new toy of mine,” he said, snapping the fingers on his left hand and making a statue of an alicorn appear behind them. “Watch and learn, little ponies.”

Celestia, Fluttershy, and Rainbow Dash all gasped as Discord quickly spun around and easily beheaded the statue with the light saber. He then tossed the weapon into the air, and turned back around.

“Now that's more like it,” he commented upon seeing the stunned faces of the ponies. He opened a hand to catch the saber as he said “Now, that's just one thing that I can make now thanks to those humans. So, I think I'll start my demands with 'complete and total surrender of Equestria to me.'”

When the princess and her subjects gasped again, rather than respond to Discord's demand, he raised an eyebrow in confusion. “Is that a no? Well, I guess I'll just have to—“ he stopped speaking when he noticed an odd feeling coming from his right wrist. He had no idea how to describe it, just that was something he had never felt before.

Discord looked down to the wrist in question, and his eyes widened in shock. Rather than seeing a human hand holding a light saber, he saw only a charred stump, and the light saber deactivated on the ground. Next to it was a severed hand, which Discord realized was the hand that was originally attached to the body he was inhabiting.

After that several key points would happen in the story, before reaching the end. Celestia would capture Discord in a magical snare while he was disoriented from losing a hand. After that, a few more scenes of the ponies planning on how to deal with Balance would occur, mostly involving Twilight trying to interrogate Discord for any information he had on Balance. Then, Balance would finally invade Canterlot, with an army of brainwashed ponies from Ponyville. Unable to harm her own citizens, Celestia would agree to surrender to Balance.

Meanwhile, Michael would be debating with Balance, trying to convince her that what she was doing was wrong. It would be revealed that Balance was the Spirit of Harmony in Equestria. She had given Celestia and Luna the Elements of Harmony many years prior, but had intended it to be a loan. After the Elements became inactive with Luna's banishment, she would be too weak to maintain a presence in Equestria, other than her tree. Finally though, she found just enough power to seek out a vessel for her to take over, but in her blind search she reached into our world and pulled through Michael and Jessica. Exhausted from the effort, Balance would not notice the two being attacked by a timberwolf. And here, I have another part of a scene actually written:

“You see,” Balance said to Michael, turning to face him, “I can not inhabit a dead body. As I am the Spirit of Harmony, I can not reverse the natural order of things. Even to me, dead is dead.”

A peculiar feeling started to well up in the pit of Michael’s stomach. A feeling that he had felt very little of in the recent weeks he had spent in Equestria. It was hope, hope that perhaps not everything was lost to him, even if he was dead.

“So, you're saying that you could not use Jessie's body if she was dead, right?” Michael raised an eyebrow, trying to remain calm.

“That is correct. A dead body is only useful to me as food for the planet.” Balance turned fully to Michael, and looked directly in his eyes. “I know what you are thinking, Michael Greenfield, and it is true. Jessica Reese is still alive.”

That is all that I wrote of that scene. After that, it would cut back to the present, where Balance would be standing over the ponies. Unsupervised because of the attack, Discord would manage to break free of the snare and appear in the throne room where Balance had confronted Celestia. He would then sense that both Michael's and Jessica's souls were still in Balance's possession. Hearing that her friend was still alive, Fluttershy would become incensed, and demand that Balance let them both go. Balance would of course, deny her request, but Michael would convince her to allow him to speak to his friends one last time. Michael would tell them all that he had learned about Balance. With this new information, the mane six would present Balance with their Elements, as useless as they were. Surprised, Balance would ask why they would so willingly give up the Elements, when it seemed in the past that she would never see them again. Twilight would take over, explaining that they never knew that the Elements were only supposed to be a loan, and that if they had known, she was sure that Celestia would have returned them after defeating Discord.

Balance would turn to Celestia, who would confirm what Twilight had said. Balance, guilt ridden by what she had done over a misunderstanding, would then agree to return the ponies to normal. Fluttershy would then ask about Michael and Jessica. Balance would look at her, and tell her that while she could allow Jessica to have her body back, she could not reinsert Michael's soul into his body. All eyes would turn to Discord, who would raise his hand and tell them that he could not return Michael's soul either. Balance would give them all one last moment with Michael, before she took the Elements and returned to her home in the Tree of Harmony. Michael would appear as a hazy form, akin to a hologram. He would tell them that he was okay with it, because at least he could die knowing that everything had worked out for them. Fluttershy would be the first to cry, but the mane six, his friends, would soon join in. He would then ask them not to cry, but to instead take care of Jessica for him. And if they could, try to find a way for her to go home. They would agree, and his time with them would end. His final goodbye would echo in the chamber for a moment, before Balance would finally leave Jessica's body, and release her hold on Michael's soul.

The chapter would end with Jessica waking up, and seeing herself surrounded by ponies, and Discord in Michael's body. She would wrap her arms around who she thought was her boyfriend, and kiss him.

There would be an epilogue, where Fluttershy would find Jessica on the same cliff that Michael had almost jumped from. Fluttershy would tell her the whole story of Michael's time in Equestria, including what happened immediately before she woke up. Discord would appear then, still inhabiting Michael's body as he in the time between the final chapter and the epilogue, he had been reformed. That time would be a totally of about two weeks. He would tell them that he felt a strange compulsion to head north, as if his body was drawing him there. This would inspire hope in Jessica, hope that Michael could be reunited with his body, and that they could finally be together again. I had planned a sequel where Fluttershy, Jessica, and Discord all travel to the northern areas of the world, hoping to find Michael.
