Growing Up

Chapter 5

Applebloom rushed out the door as the bell rang, not waiting for her friends. They'll catch up. Eventually.

She raced into the clubhouse and slowed down as she entered the workroom. She saw Hex already working on something. He must be working on that dollhouse he told me about. What a great brother. Applebloom walked right up behind the colt who didn't seem to have noticed her arrival. She quietly leaned her head over the unsuspecting colt's shoulder.

"Whatcha doin'?" She said as Hex jumped up. Got him!

"Very funny." He muttered as he glared at the laughing pony from the floor. He got back to his feet and returned to his project, waiting for Applebloom to catch her breath.

“Y-ya shoulda seen yer face!" The filly managed to say between the hysteric bursts of laughter.

“Whatever. Shouldn't Claw be here soon?” The colt rolled his eyes. “The contest is today, right?”

“Yep! You have the honor of deciding which pony is the best teacher for you about constructing various projects. Of course you'll be basing that off of past experiences of ours.” The yellow pony smiled. “Fun huh?”

“Loads!” Hex grinned, realizing that his mentor may not be understanding his sarcasm. “He better hurry up or you’ll automatically win.”

“Awww that wouldn’t be an amusing win! Especially after I got the Cakes to spill the beans on what happened last Hearth's Warming Eve with the pies!” She grinned evilly and rubbed her front hooves together.

“O-kay… Anyways… Ah, there he is!” Hex pointed to the panting red colt. “Finally you get here Claw!”

“Sorry. Was late. Had to. Do something. Ran here.” He managed to pant out. After a few minutes, he finally was able to breathe normally again. “So, should we start the contest now?”

“Yes!” Applebloom shouted before the small colt could say something. “So who is going first?”

“You seem eager, I`ll let you go first.” The earth stallion smirked at her.

“Ok! So did Claw ever tell ya what happened when he tried to help the Cakes?” She grinned and looked over at the red stallion.

“That story huh?” He rolled his eyes.

“Yep! Now where was ah? Oh, yes. So one day, about three years ago, we had just got our cutie marks. Well Claw so happened to come up with the strange idea that ‘e could build a contraption to help throw any pies that the Cakes needed to deliver to various customers in the building. He succeeded in building such a contraption, but at that time he had yet to actually test it. Being the thick-headed colt that he was, he thought testing wasn’t necessary. So on Hearth’s Warming Eve, the Cakes decided to use it in their store. Let’s just say that he was cleaning their kitchen roof and all of the walls for the next month in an attempt to clear all of the food stains away.” Applebloom laughed.

“Did you really do that Claw?” Hex laughed.

“Yeah but it isn’t as bad as what ‘Bloom did last year.” He smirked.

“What did she do?” Hex looked at the older colt.

“Well..” He grinned as he glanced at the filly. “She didn’t have a very good time with the Cutie Mark Crusader Clubhouse Jr.”

“Yer really gonna tell him about that?” She facehoofed.

“Yes. Yes I am.” He said as she stuck her tongue out at him.

“Oh she stuck her tongue out. Now I have to tell it.” Claw laughed.

“Then tell it already!” Hex whined.

“Alright, alright. So you know that all of the Cutie Mark Crusaders helped build this building, right? Well originally Applebloom had the stupid idea that she could build it all by herself, no help. She was doing fine until putting the frame together came up. Like the determined pony she is, our little Applebloom here tried to hammer in nails as she held up two frames at a time. Long story short, she got her right hind leg caught under a frame. It was an hour before I came over to check how she was doing and rescued her.”

“Ya did not rescue me, ya mearley helped me before ah could help maself.” Applebloom stated.

“Yeah, you totally didn’t just have over an hour to help yourself.” Claw laughed.

“Whatever.” Applebloom cracked a smile.

“So Hex, who do you think made the bigger mistake?” Claw turned to the dark green colt.

“Well…” He started. “Both Applebloom and Claw Hammer made some major mistakes. Claw did make a really stupid mistake though Applebloom did make an even more idiotic mistake…”

“Can you please get on with it? Ah don’t think Claw here can take the waiting.” Applebloom interrupted.

“Ok ok. The loser is Applebloom.” Hex concluded.

“Yes! I knew I would win!” He laughed.

“Darn.” Applebloom couldn’t help but laugh herself.

“Come on Applebloom! We have to go to Rarity’s to get your new dress.” He grinned.

“Wait, the loser had to wear a dress?” Hex asked confused.

“Not just any dress, a frilly pink one. And they have to wear it to school. Don’t worry, I get to take pictures.” Claw explained.

“Let’s just get this over with already.” Applebloom sighed. The two older ponies walked through the town on their way to the Carousel Boutique. Claw wouldn’t stop talking about how his victory had been so easy. The filly was relieved once they arrived at their destination.

“Hello darlings, what brings you here?” Rarity said as they walked in.

“We were wondering if you had any frilly, light pink dresses?” Claw smirked and looked to Applebloom.

“Oh really? Well I think I have just the thing.” The white unicorn went into a storage room. She came out a minute later holding a long, rose colored dress covered in sequins and frills. “Is this good enough?”

“Oh it`s way better than I had planned. Thank you Rarity.” Claw smiled.

“It’s no problem darling.” Rarity said. “But I suggest trying it on soon to make sure it fits.”

“No ah think it’s fine. It will only be worn tha one time.” Applebloom chimed in.

“Ok, that’s your choice then. Well I best be getting back to my work. You two have a wonderful date.” Rarity turned her back to them.

“We aren’t going on a date!” They both shouted. They left soon after. Claw Hammer walked Applebloom home to the farm, helping hold the dress from dragging in the dirt.

“Well thank you for the dress aide.” Applebloom turned her head to look at the red colt. “Even though yer the reason that ah have to wear it in the first place.”

“Don’t worry about it, it’s what I do.” He laughed.

“See ya tomorrow Claw.”

“And I you, Apples.” They turned away from each other and went their own ways. Applebloom hang the dress up in her room carefully. I’m so going to get him back for this.
