The fall of a god: the truth behind it all

Luna's bedroom

In the brisk chill of night air, two sisters sit beside each other upon the balcony to the night Princess' bedroom, a sorrowful look upon the younger sisters face. Luna sighed as she looked down to the sleepy city below, "Celly, it has been many years now since she has awoken from her slumber but if frightens me so, what if she is not ready for the truth I have for her?" she asks without turning, a small tear running down her cheek.

A white wing lay upon Luna's side in comfort, "Sister, since she has awoken I have personally looked over her every move and growth and I can say without any qualms that she is mature enough, I am sure of this. Surely, it will take time for her to adjust to the truth we have to tell her but there is no doubt when I say she will accept it," She says as she nuzzles her smaller sister, Luna returned the gesture as she hugged Celestia's chest tightly, both legs held tight around her barrel.

Luna looked at Celestia as the tear on her cheek fell to the ground, "I do so hope you are right Sister because when she arrives I have no turning back, I must tell her the truth ad when I have finished I will not stop her if she decides to leave... I have no right to do that, I commit to my choice in doing so, even if that would tear me once more," She says with a sniffle.

Celestia released her grip slightly as she lent back to look at her sister, "Luna, I am sure that it will be very hard but it is for the best that you tell her now, it would only hurt that much more later. It was never your fault you know," she said lifting Luna's chin, "It was my choice to have her grow as a normal 'unicorn' in the eyes of society, so don't have any blame for yourself, it was the best choice to save her having heart brake," she says as she once again hugs Luna. After a long embrace Celestia makes her way to the door, "I shall see to it that day court be cancelled so that we both may confront her tomorrow, so do not fret little sister, I shall see you later in the day, goodnight Luna," she said as she disappeared through the door.

Laying her head down upon her bed a sigh escapes Luna's lips, "yes, goodnight Celly," closing her eyes as the moon light shines down upon her sleeping form.

The next day, ponyville

Twilight sat on her red chair in her library as for once she had little to nothing to do, and as such decided for once she would like to have a read of something other than texts upon facts of some sort. 'The Adventures of Time Turner and the twitchy tinker', a new series of the whooves that she liked, it was nice every now and again to deviate from studies to relax... don't get her wrong she loved to study just as much but it never hurt to catch up every now again with her favorite book series in her 'fiction' pile.

The scratching of her little assistants feet against the floor pulls her eyes from the page as Spike enters the room, a scroll in hand, "Hey Twi, just got this, thought I would come and pass it to you," he said as he ran over with the scroll, Twilight always thought it was adorable how he would run to please others, Spike was such a good assistant.

Twilight nodded as she picked the scroll from Spikes grasp, opening the wax seal and unfurling it to read: Dearest Twilight Sparkle, my ever so faithful student. I Princess Celestia and dire arch of the sun, summon your presence alone to Canterlot immediately.

PS. nothing has happened, so don't worry we just need to talk alone, until I see you.

Quickly rolling up the scroll she levitates her white saddlepack onto herself, "Sorry about this Spike, the Princess wants to see me today, will you head to Rarity's after todays orders, I only think Ditzy is coming for Dinky's new math book so it shouldn't be long. I will be back later," she said before the little drake could say goodbye, he stood there with a longing look as she left.

Four hours later at Canterlot castle

Twilight had arrived at the gates to be greeted by a guard, "her majesty, Princess Celestia has asked me to escort you to her quarter, she and Princess Luna are waiting so I must ask we make haste," placing his arm back down and turning around the guard makes a pace of walking that is fast but not to taxing to the guest of the Princess.

Princess Luna is waiting too, but why I mean, aren't I not getting a lesson, with the thought of being in a room with both Princess' Twilight has a feeling that something isn't right and that what would come next wasn't a lesson but something else, she was right what was coming was something no one would have ever expected.

Two white doors that were guarded by guards opened up to reveal both Princess' sat at a small table upon cushions, "Princess, Twilight Sparkle has arrived," at the nod of his Princess the guard made his leave as Twilight approached the table, once close enough she bowed low in respect to her Princess' and mentor.

"Rise my dear Twilight, we have much to discuss over the next few hours," she said as Twilight got up, smiling at Celestia.

Twilight sat down as Celestia offered her a seat, "If you don't mind me asking, why was I supposed to come alone, I haven't been asked to come alone in many years?" Twilight asked. Twilight noticed how edgy Luna seemed and Celestia almost perfect mask seemed to be cracking today, it felt awkward being in front of both presences of the Princess' at once.

Celestia sighed, "now Twilight, I know this talk will be very... personal but promise to listen to it all, Luna will tell you something and youhave to listen to her without running away and then make a decision," she said with a look between worry and seriousness.

"My decision to what?" Twilight said as a look of confusion came upon her face.

Luna turned to look at Twilight, slowly shaking, "Now Twilight, can I ask, how many years have you known my sister?" she asked as a concentrated look replaced Twilights confused face.

"Well since my parents were told it would be good for me to enroll at Celestias academy for gifted unicorns, that's nearly fourteen years now, I was eight at the time I did my exam"

Luna fidgeted with her hooves as she carried on, clearly on edge about something as her voice cracked slightly, "were you ever told who suggested that you enroll into the academy? If not I can tell you now it was none other than my sister, Celestia told your... parents to enroll you," Luna said as she pointed a hoof at Celestia as Twilight gasped.

Twilights hung her mouth agape with shock at her mentor, Celestia nodded as she addressed the subject, "it is true, I was the one who asked Nightlight and Velvet to enroll you, it was all for good reasons. You were told an explanation as to how you were adopted by the Sparkles, just like when you were seven and Shining was adopted, correct?"

Twilight nodded as Luna's face darkened, Twilight knew something was very wrong for some reason, "Yes... I was told when I was a filly my mother had died in an accident with my father," I don't like where this is headed.

A pained look came upon both princess' as Celestia sighed, "I am afraid that was a lie, A story that myself and Velvet had made up. If the truth was discovered by the other nobles tartarus' gates would open, it was the only way I could have made you my student Twilight," she said as Twilights head sunk, her bags covering her eyes, "it might seem strange as to why we did that Twilight but you will understand everything soon, we had to do it. Your birth mother, well, something happened that took a very, very, long time to fix. I was surprised that you even woke from your slumber Twenty years ago"

My slumber, what? Twilight was fast becoming panicked, what was slumber? who was her mother? why was the closest ponies to her lying her whole life? it was hitting her like a train, "W-what do you mean... slumber?"

A sniffle came from Luna as Twilight turned to see a very sorrowful expression, tears riddled her face, "T-T... Twilight...I..I"

"Its alright Sister, I can tell her if you want? It should not have to way upon your shoulders after so many sorrowful nights," Celestia herself shed tears before turning to tell Twilight all that was running through her mind but was stopped by Luna.

"No Celly, It is my duty to her, I haven't been there for her so far and I wont leave her alone any more," Twilight looked to the moon goddess, she looked about ready to break down but determination showed through her tear riddled eyes, "Now about the S...s..slumber, Twilight it wont be easy to take. I will tell you a small story, one you have heard and read yourself but what you have read was a ruse, I shall tell you the truth of Nightmare Moon. A thousand years ago our nation celebrated, crowds of subjects partied in the streets, it was to be the greatest thing to happen to Equestria in many thousands of years, it was the birth of an heir to the throne," she said as Twilight gasped once more, reveling in the story. A small smile tugged at Luna's face, "A beautiful little filly... but there was something wrong, after she was born... she would not wake or move from her sleep. It slowly rotted her mothers mind thinking it was all her own fault," Luna stopped as her tears overcame her, Twilight wanted to move to comfort her but didn't due to the atmosphere.

"B-but what does that have to do with me?" Twilight asked.

Breathing in and out to calm her tears Luna looked back at Twilight, "the reason as to why we used the word slumber Twilight, was that you literally slept near a thousand years never growing or moving... Twilight I-I... I'm your birth mother, when you wouldn't wake up I slowly went crazy over a few years. The guilt ate at me for not being able to wake you, it was too much to bare and I ended up doing foolish things, nightmares haunted me and when I lost your father I turned to my dark side... if it wasn't for Celestia the Equestria you know now probably wouldn't be here," she said as Twilight sat there with a blank expression.

"Y-y......... your my mother?" Twilight said as her eyes started to glaze over as the world twisted away from her vision.

Before Twilights head hit the floor Luna rushed over to catch her daughters fall, "she... she fainted, I knew this was too soon, I knew that if we told her now it would be too much sister," Luna said as she held the sleeping form of Twilight.

Celestia looked at Luna who held Twilight and smiled even after this morbid conversation at the display, "she may have fainted little sister but at least now she can rest and in the morning she can tell us her opinion on what we have discussed. She may then give us her decision as to be an ascended Princess in her true form and join the royal family or carry on with her 'mortal' life in ponyville until she has to leave them, never the less all will come tomorrow," She said as they picked up Twilight and moved Twilight into Luna's room.

Luna lay her daughters sleeping form upon her bed, "Still sister, I am scared, what will she say?" she says with a sad expression as she looks at Twilight, her chest rising slowly before letting out her air, "Truly I am scared, what will my little star say tomorrow?"
