I am an alicorn. No, I'm not a princess. I can't really use my wings, for both of my parents are unicorns. No wings in my family at all. Ever. Anyway, I can't use my wings, for I had nopony to teach me. But, I am going to change that. I have a friend who is a pegasus, Thunder Dust. She may sound terrible, but she's really nice. She is going to teach me to fly. Now, I know what you're thinking. How was I born an alicorn? Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, Princess Cadance, and Princess Twilight were all made alicorns after doing something considered impossible. I was an alicorn since birth. Why is this? I have asked my teacher, Princess Twilight, many times, but even she would not say. She just encourages me to make some friends, and I might find out. I already have three friends, I say. She just replies with a simple 'good'.
"Night Star, you ready to take to the skies or what?" Thunder bust into my room in Princess Twilight's library, startling me out of my memories.
"What? Oh, yeah. Just a minute. Let me finish this chapter." I replied.
"Uhg, you always say that! Today's the day, Star, I can just feel it!" Thunder said, annoyed.
"Yeah, and you always say that!" I shot back.
"Ok, so I do. But today I really think you can do it!"
"Go ahead, Star. I think she might just be right." Princess Twilight came in.
"Thank you, Princess." I said as Thunder and I both bowed.
"Star, Thunder, what have I told you about bowing to me?"
"Um… don't bow?"Thunder Dust said.
"That's right, Thunder. So please, girls, please don't bow."
"Yes, Princess." We replied together.
"Please, call me Twilight. You know that."
"Yes, Twilight." We said as we ran out to the meadow behind Fluttershy's home.
"Hello, girls." Fluttershy called softly as we passed her home.
"Hey, Star, Thunder." Our friend, Silverstar, trotted along with us. "Moonbeam's meeting us there." She told us.
"Ok. Let's go! I think today is the day that Star will learn to fly!" Thunder told Silverstar.
"That's great! Star, you must be so excited! I rem-" She stopped immediately.
"You what?" I asked, confused.
"Nothing. I just remember hearing Miss Bluebell talking about when she first mastered flight." the blue earth pony shook her dark pink and blue mane as if shaking off water.
"Oh." I replied.
"Miss Bluebell never talked about mastering flight." Thunder said.
"Yes she did. Maybe you weren't there." Silverstar said a bit too quickly.
"Does it matter, whatever you're arguing about?" Moonbeam called as we reached Fluttershy's meadow.
"No. They're just being them." I replied.
"Yeah, right! If anything-" Thunder said, indignant.
"Can we just start this lesson, please? I want to get back to my book." I said.
"She's right, you know. We don't have all day." Silverstar said.
"Alright. Star, take off. Flap those wings as hard as you can, and as fast. Just try to keep yourself off of the ground for as long as possible. Try to go forward this time, too." Thunder said.
"Yeah, I'm gonna go backward." I replied sarcastically.
"I hope not." Thunder said."Just do it!"
"Alright, alright." I said as I rose up in the air.
"Go, Star! You can do it!" Silverstar told me.
"Now try going forward!" Thunder yelled.
"I am!" I replied as I shot forward in the air.
"Yeah! You're doing it!" Moonbeam screamed.
"Yes! You were right, Thunder! Today was the day!" I said, as the pegasus instinct in me took hold and I soared across the treetops, past Fluttershy's window, and straight to Rainbow Dash's cloud home.
"Hey, kid. How'd ya get up here?" Rainbow Dash said as she came out of her house.
"I flew!"
"Wow. Finally got those wings under control?"
"Yep!" I replied.
"Nice. Now ya just gotta study like Twilight, and you can be as awesome as her! By the way, I think she's looking for you. You might want to go see her. You know what she's like." Rainbow Dash advised.
"Ok. Thanks, Rainbow Dash!" I yelled as I flew off to Princess Twilight's library.

"Hey, there, Star. I see you've learned to use your wings!" Princess Twilight called.
"Yeah. It was only with Thunder Dust's help." I replied, suddenly bashful.
"Well, at least you can fly. Can you teach me? I'm still terrible with these." the Princess asked as she flexed her wings.
"But, Twilight, I only just learned how to fly. I can't teach anypony."
"I know. I was kidding. Nopony expects you to be perfect. Now, come inside. I have something I need to tell you." Princess Twilight beckoned me inside.
"Yes, Princess-I mean, Twilight?" I asked once we were inside.
"Spike, could you please get 'Myths and Legends Volume 13', the one that Princess Celestia loaned me?"
"Here it is!" Spike replied.
"I didn't know there was a volume 13." I said.
"It is, but it's extremely hard to get. Anyway, there is a legend in here that you need to hear."
"Why?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.
"Just listen.
'Once in a very long while, an alicorn comes to Equestria, not through normal means, but through birth. This alicorn has a choice. They may take the path of Princesses past, or the one not traveled normally, but only by a princess before her. The one pony who is truly an alicorn at heart shall prevail and become great in the eyes of all. Be warned: if the alicorn's heart is impure, they shall not prevail.'
I think you might just be the alicorn talked about in the legend! You were an alicorn since birth!"Princess Twilight said excitedly.
"But I don't even know who my parents are. I only just learned to fly!" I replied.
"That doesn’t matter. Thunder can teach you more, and I can help with your magic.
"Yes, but, I just don't think that I'm the alicorn the legend talks about. I can't be the only born alicorn in Equestria, can I?" I asked.
"There are none that I know of. I need to tell you something."
"What do you need to tell me?" I asked.
"You-" She was interrupted by Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, and Applejack bursting into the library.
"Hey, Star, heard ya learned ta fly." Applejack said.
"Time for a party!" screamed Pinkie Pie.
"Pinkie, that's your answer for everything. Anyway, good job, Star." Rainbow Dash applauded.
"Good job, Star. 9
You did great." Fluttershy whispered.
"I think you did amazingly, darling." Rarity said.
"Oh. Thank you. But it was Thunder Dust who really did it." I told them.
"Yeah, but you actually flew! Soon you might be as awesome as me!" Rainbow Dash pointed out.
"Girls, I was just telling Star something. Can you please leave and celebrate another time?" Princess Twilight yelled.
"Oh, sorry, Twilight. We didn't mean to interrupt." Fluttershy whispered.
"Yeah, OK, Twilight. Only because you asked. See ya later, kid." Rainbow Dash said.
"We're awfully proud of you, sugarcube." Applejack told me.
"See you at the party, Star!"
"OK, that's all well and good, Pinkie, but we have to talk about something important here. Bye! See you girls later!" Twilight said.
"I shall make a grand dress-" Rarity started as Twilight slammed the door on her.
"Pri-Twilight, if I may, what was that for?" I asked.
"I needed to talk to you. Now, what I was going to say before we were interrupted was that your parents are unknown. You were left on my doorstep when you were just a little baby, before I had time to find out what your name was. Your parents-"
"Twilight, you lied to me! How could you?" I turned away, crying at this new revelation.
"Star, wait. I did eventually track down your parents. One of them was a unicorn, and the other, a pegasus. They felt as if a little filly would be a burden on them, but they realized only recently that they were wrong. Wrong in giving you up. They want to see you, Star. Your parents want to see you." Twilight said quickly.
"I don't care. I don't want to speak to anypony right now. I'm going-well, you wouldn't care where I was going now, would you. You don't care about me, and neither do my 'parents'." I said bitterly as I ran out of the Princess's library and into the Everfree Forest to see Zecora. Even though I had never been allowed in, I knew the way because I had often escaped the library when Twilight let me, to visit Zecora. She often helped me deal with things.
"Well there, little filly, how fares you, my silly?" Zecora asked as I galloped in crying.
"Zecora, Twilight has been lying to me my entire life! She said she knew my parents but she didn't!" I cried.
"Well now, Night Star, don't you take this a bit far? What if Twilight Sparkle truly did not know your roots? What if she did not know the truth?" Zecora gave her amazing advice.
"I like that idea, but I doubt it. Twilight was lying to me." I said dejectedly.
"Little Night Star, do you doubt your friend? There is no need. Twilight was just doing what she believed to be right." Zecora said, not rhyming, for once.
"Are you sure about that?" I said as Rarity ran into Zecora's house.
"There you are, Night Star. Where have you been? We have all been simply frantic to find you!" Rarity said.
"Why? Twilight lied to me, and you all basically supported her." I said calmly.
"Darling, we had a good reason. You are the stuff of legend! You have a special path in life!"
"Rarity- oh, hi, sugarcube. Rarity said anything 'bout how you're the most special pony in the history a Equestria yet?" Applejack burst into Zecora's cottage.
"I am not the most special pony in the history of Equestria! Especially if I've been lied to my entire life!" I yelled.
"Sugarcube, nopony's been lying to you. We all just wanted you to be happy. Twilight said she had tracked your parents down, didn't she? Twilight never lies."
"At least, not that we know of." Rainbow Dash said from the window.
"Rainbow!" Rarity and Applejack yelled.
"So, you knew? All of you knew about this and didn't tell me?" I yelled.
"Well, kind of. Twilight told us that you were an orphan, that your parents had abandoned you, so we did a bit of research. We found your birth name, Star. Night Star is your real name." Rainbow Dash said cautiously.
"For all I know, you could just be lying to me right now!"
"Sugarcube, we understand if you don't like us right now. Why don't we go somewhere else until you cool down a bit." Applejack said.
"Talk as if I'm a cupcake or something. Great thing to do when the pony in question is right in the room with you!"
"Speaking of cupcakes, here, have one, Star!" Pinkie Pie burst into the cottage.
"Hi, Pinkie. Come to join the party?" I asked dejectedly.
"Ooh! Where? Where?" She replied.
"Oh, it hasn't been decided when or where yet. That's up to them. They can decide after I run away." I said, nodding my head to Applejack and Rarity.
"Star, have you ever been in the Everfree forest past my cottage?" Zecora asked.
"No, but why would you care?"
"The forest is a dangerous beast. It would snap you up like a manticore does its prey."
"And that matters why? Fifth most powerful alicorn in all of Equestria here."
"Night Star, the Everfree forest is a danger to all who travel through." Zecora demanded.
"Well, Twilight and the rest of you sure seem ok." I said rudely.
"Darling, that was because the Nightmare Forces underestimated us. Couple that with the fact that we represent the Elements of Harmony, and you get the picture." Rarity said.
"Nightmare Forces. Right." I smirked.
"Sugarcube, don't go. You can't." Applejack said.
"And why not?!" I yelled as I ran out of the cottage and deeper in to the Everfree Forest.
