Diary of the Night

Reunion - Chapter 91

For as long as I can remember war has been the driving force of innovation. A powerful enemy will make invention a necessity.

It is easy for a nation to become complacent in its power. The griffons had secured their power in brutality until they counted me among their enemies. I did not allow Equestria to suffer the same fate. Even as my armies marched from victory to victory I told tinkerers and inventers only news of defeat and death.

Yet in my absence the opposite has proven to be true. My night ponies have spent a millennia preparing for war with Equestria while Equestria has spent the same time in near total peace. The night ponies are struggling, they exist apart from the other tribes and suffer from the loss. Crops do not produce so abundantly without an earth pony in the fiends, the weather is not so kind without a pegasus in the sky, and every day conveniences are not so easily produced and used without unicorns.

In ages past all four tribes shaped the world around them and established what remains to be the greatest of all nations, alone the night ponies have been able to do nothing more than survive. Equestria has grown and changed without them. I would simply order them to acclimate to their allies of old but they still suspect me to be nothing more than a puppet and a prisoner to Celestia.

These new technologies are changing everything and I will not allow my Night Ponies to be left behind any longer yet I cannot act directly. My guard the only Night Ponies in Equestria, it must fall to them to re-forge the broken alliances and friendships between tribes.

It was Twilight Sparkle and her friendship that freed me from my madness, perhaps it will be friendship that reforms this splintered nation.
