A Simple Picnic.

by Janaff

Chapter one.

Twilight was a little surprised when Pinkie asked her if she would like to have lunch together. Sure, they were friends, great friends. Just...the thought of being alone with her was...different at least.

"Aw well!" Twilight exclaimed. "I know we'll still have a great time. Now let's see..." Twi went through her satchel, making sure she had everything she needed. Pinkie told her she was gonna pack the food, but Twilight insisted she had to do something to help. So she talked her into letting her make the desert. Twilight knew Pinkie was hesitate about it, since she loved baking. That or she might have been worried about Twilight's baking being bad. Twi wasn't the best cook around but she could make a cake if needed. Granted, she made brownies today.

"Everything seems to be here...something feels off though...where did I put that checklist...." Twilight looked around for a few moments, through drawers, and under her bed. She groaned, noticing the time that she was gonna be late if she didn't hurry.

"Spike!! Can you come here for a minute?" Spike climbed down the stairs groggily, mumbling something , he stared at Twilight. He seemed very...angry.

"Is something wrong...?" She questioned. "You look exhausted..." Spike sighed and rolled his eyes before shaking his head.

"Oh no I'm great-" He replied, sarcastically before being cut off by a purple mare.

"Excellent, now help me look for the checklist. I forgot something for my picnic with Pinkie!" Twilight said in a panic.

"What did you forget..." Spike said back, not really caring, easily seeing she was overreacting again.

"I'm not sure but I know it's something important!!!" Spike sighed and started to shove her out the door.

"Look Twilight, I'm sure you didn't forget anything. Now calm down, relax, and just go have a good time." Spike grunted, having trouble to even move her just a little. "Man...what's this mare been eating..." Twilight blinked for a moment, then realized how silly she was being and headed towards the door. Causing Spike to fall flat on his face.

"You're right Spike, this is a day for fun. No more worrying about my studies or what's going to happen later, or one thing I may be forgetting. I'm going to go out and have a nice, wonderful time with a friend." Spike got up and brushed himself off then opened his mouth to speak, but before he could say anything she was off, waving a hoof back."I'll be home in a few hours, Spike! Take care!"

Spike closed the door and headed into the kitchen. He opened the fridge and licked his lips at the sight of all the food. And nopony was here to tell him when to stop. He reached up and grabbed the ice cream and giggled. "Hello, Mrs. Vanilla. My name is Spike, I don't believe we've met." He said as he popped the lid off and started shoveling a spoon into the container.

Twilight happily trotted into the Sugarcube Corner, smiling as she saw the familiar face of Mrs. Cake.

"Good morning, Princess Twilight!" Mrs. Cake said to her, a warm friendly smile on her face. Twilight rolled her eyes. She still wasn't used to having ponies call her that. She frankly would prefer if they didn't. Though she doesn't tell most of them that in fear of coming off as rude or unappreciative of her new status.

"Good morning, Mrs. Cake. Is Pinkie Pie awake...? According to her, she wanted us to leave from here about ten minutes ago..." Before she could even answer, Pinkie bounced down the stares and jumped right at Twilight, shoving both of them to the ground. "Oof! Well uh...hi there Pinkie Pie..." Twilight grunted as Pinkie laid on top of her, nuzzling her muzzle.

"Hi Twilight! Are you ready for today?! I've planned out a whole lot of fun things for us to do! I'm so glad you decided to come! It's just not a picnic with only one pony!" Twilight smiled softly and giggled. Pinkie always had a way of making her...well happy to put it simply.

"Well of course I decided to come, it's been awhile since me and you have done something, just the two of us." Pinkie rolled of Twilight and got up. She then nodded excitedly.

"Great! Now come on! We're already behind schedule so we better get a move on! Bye Mrs. Cake!!" Pinkie was already rushing out the door hastily.

"W-wait, Pinkie! Slow down a little!" Twi stammered then quickly said goodbye to Mrs. Cake and bolted out the door after the pink mare.

Mrs. Cake chuckled to herself. "Oh Pinkie...you're always so lively. Your friends are lucky to have a pony like you in their lives."

Pinkie lead Twilight to a nice open meadow. It was a rather beautiful place. A few trees and bushes here, a small creek over there, birds singing peacefully. A nice place for a picnic. Pinkie had set everything up beforehoof, she told Twilight if she hadn't she wouldn't have been able to give Twi a hug earlier, since she would have been carrying a lot of stuff. The two sat down and relaxed out on the blanket. They ate their sunflower sandwiches rather quietly. After some awkward silence Twilight spoke.

"So...you wanna go ahead and eat dessert...? I made brownies!" Twilight smiled warmly, trying to get some kind of conversation going. She was very surprised at the response she got though, Pinkie shook her head, looking a little...nervous? No, I must be imagining things, Twilight thought. Pinkie Pie is the most out going pony she knows, there is no way she would get nervous. Pinkie Pie's mood suddenly changed and she jumped up and giggled at Twilight.

"Hey, I know! Let's go exploring! There's some really neat stuff out here I bet! Come on!" Twilight blinked in surprise for a moment at the sudden change of her demeanor, then shook her head.

"No, let's not. Well I mean...you were acting strange a second ago...is something wrong...?" Pinkie didn't say anything, just glared at Twilight in a very cold manner. The look was a mixture of both sadness...and angry. She finally spoke after what felt like hours.

"No. It's nothing."

Twilight groaned and then sighed. "If you're gonna lie at least try. I can tell something is wrong if you're acting like that!"

Pinkie scoffed and started talking in a rather obnoxious tone, mocking her own cheerful attitude. "Nothing is wrong, Twilight! Just good ol' Pinkie Pie here!!! Fine and dandy as always!!!!"

Twilight was speechless and shocked. She hasn't seen Pinkie like this in a long time...when they threw her a surprise birthday party was the last time she was like this. Before Twi could say anything though, Pinkie was off, carrying the picnic basket in her mouth, trotting off angrily. "Wait!" Shouted Twilight, chasing after her.

Pinkie groaned and started to run, gaining a good amount of distance on the alicorn. "Would you just leave me alone!!!" Pinkie said, though with difficulty as she was carrying a basket in her mouth and running at quite a speed.

"Leave? Why would I leave?" Twilight remarked back, still chasing Pinkie Pie as they ran through the open meadow, now coming up near the creek. "It's obvious something is wrong! Just calm down and we can talk this over! I promise!" Pinkie angrily stomped her hooves on the ground, leaping forward and knocking some dirt at Twilight, who stopped and ducked, losing even more distance on Pinkie. "Drat! That's it!!"

Pinkie slowed a little and looked back, her eyes popped open as Twilight's horn flashed, warping her right in front of Pinkie. Pinkie looked back ahead and tried to slow down but was too late, she crashed into Twi and the two of them stumbled into the creek. The water forced them down and led them into a river. The mares were a little scared and were holding onto each now, screaming as the water bashed them around. The river was pretty powerful, pulling them under, then up, then to the left, no right, no down, up, backwards and forwards, sideways and in circles till finally...they reached the waterfall. They held onto each other tightly as they plunged down it, panicking and shivering in fear. When they hit the bottom and resurfaced from the water they swam to the nearby shore, still holding onto each other. Although now they were bickering once again.

"Look what you caused!!!" Twilight screamed, trying to brush off her wet mane and tail.
"Me!? Me?! You're the one who used your stupid, fancy, flashymajigger magic to get in front of me!!"
"Pinkie, 'flashymajigger' isn't a word!"
"Oh so now you're calling me stupid!?"
"And what if I am!?"
"I never thought of you as one to be petty Miss Princess Twilight! But I guess you're already beginning to change!"

Twilight stared at Pinkie dumbfounded. "Change...? What are you talking about...? And why are you insulting me by saying princess in such a mocking way?! I'm still the same, even if I'm now an alicorn!"

"Ya sure...for now..." Pinkie slumped on the ground, making sure she was facing away from Twilight.

Twilight huffed and turned away from Pinkie. But something on the ground caught her attention. It was a cake. Next to it was the basket Pinkie brought. She somehow manged to hold onto it the whole time they were going down the waterfall...but that's not what Twi was really thinking about. The cake was still in almost perfect condition. Pinkie must have baked it...that's why she didn't want me to do anything, Twilight thought. "Wait, what's that...?" Twi peered closer at the cake, she was started to make out some writing on it. Writing in frosting of course. It was written very small due to it being rather lengthy.

Congrats, Twilight! I'm so happy that you've become an alicorn! Now you'll be more respected, and maybe Princess Celestia will tell you some deep, dark secrets about Equestria!...I also know this means you'll be even more busy though...and that you may even have to leave us...and you may change since you'll be spending so much time with the Royals...but I just want you to know, no matter what happens, I'll always be there for you. I'm thankful for our friendship and the time we've gotten to spend together...thank you, Twilight. I think that's all I wanted to say...or what I couldn't say....

Love, your dear friend, Pinkamena Diane Pie.

Twilight was in tears. So that's what this was all about...she quickly turned around and rushed over to her friend, jumping on top of her and nuzzling her muzzle. "Oof! Hey! What are you doing! I don't...want...to..." Pinkie realized Twilight was crying and knew why. She wrapped her hooves around Twi and embraced her in a warm hug.

"I'm sorry for the way I was acting...I had no idea...I'm sorry...I am..." Twilight said, still holding back some tears.

"No, it's fine...really...I should have just told you from the start...it was a silly thing to worry about..."

"It is not! Pinkie, I promise I will never leave you. You, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Rarity, and Fluttershy, you're all my friends. I would never want to leave you...and I defiantly won't ever change...at least not for the worse...got it?"

Pinkie smiled softly and nodded. "Got it!"

The two cuddled up together and started to watch the sun as it went down.
"It's really pretty...." Pinkie said, her eyes not drifting from it.
"Indeed it is..." Added Twi.
"Today was a perfect day...wouldn't you agree..." Pinkie said as she started to fall into sleep. Twilight giggled as she watched her.
"I agree very much, my friend..." She replied, before falling asleep herself.
