Diary of the Night

Reunion - Chapter 80

Any beasts that saw fit to interrupt our journey became nothing more than an outlet for our frustration.

Through forest and swamp we traveled to find a cave more ancient than the world it sat in. We cannot say for certain how long the journey lasted. We decided not to challenge Discord for control of the heavens until we had a way to fight him.

The careful phases of the night we perfected over centuries were nothing more than a joke to him. The moon sprinted through her phases and constellations fought for prominence in the minutes-long night. He was a foal breaking priceless pottery just to see what sort of noise it would make as it shattered.

The cave was almost boring. It could easily have been mistaken for any other cave because every other cave was patterned off of it. A few turns into the cave we met the elements.

In a way they are thinking and in a way they are not. They are the foundation stones of this world and so every wisdom that will ever pass through this world is theirs. Yet they stay as nothing more than stones, no more thinking than any magical amulet would be.

Harmony searched our every thought since our birth. Our memories flashed before us and we knew that they saw. After our every thought and deed had been weighed Harmony spoke. It was a voice if depth and power, like distant thunder; yet it was near and intimate as a whisper.

“Honesty,” it spoke and we saw Celestia in a thousand negotiations, always seeing the truth.

“Kindness,” it said and we saw Celestia’s mercy and understanding, we saw her every act of leniency to others.

“Laughter,” we saw father smile at our stars, we saw a thousand celebrations of drink and merriment.

“Generosity,” we saw our every night sky. A precious painting given to all who would look.

“Loyalty,” we saw battle, terrible cries of rage and pain. Yet even through all this we did not turn away, we defended our ponies at every turn.

“Magic,” We saw Celestia take the tribes, suspicious and mistrustful, and bind them into a nation.

The visions faded and before us were a sword and a scepter, each inlaid with three brilliant jewels. We were given weapons to defeat Discord.
