Chapter I

Hot tears ran down Trixie’s face as she ran to the Everfree Forest. She had just been shown up by Twilight and, to make matters worse her home was destroyed by that accursed Ursa Minor.

Trixie ran until she was too exhausted to run any more. After catching her breath, Trixie took in her surroundings. All she could see was trees, but farther down the trail she could see ruins of some kind. The events that lead her here happened during the night and after exhausting all her energy she was getting cold and needed to find shelter. In her mind, she know at any moment one of the many creatures would smell her and come looking for a midnight snack. Just then she heard what she feared....

ROOOAAAR!!

Trixie didn't want to look, she just bolted for the ruins; there she hoped she would be safe. As she got closer to the ruin she noticed it looked like some kind of complex; perhaps left from the great war, she didn't know nor did she really care, she just didn't want to die. Using her magic she forced open the door, rushed inside, and slammed the door behind her and moved a fallen pillar in front of the door. Now feeling safer she paused to catch her breath and began to look around; she noticed a stairwell that went under ground but what got her attention was a crumbling wall.

Trixie looked through the cracks of the wall and saw something she never seen before; a giant mana crystal rotating slowly just a few hoofs off the ground; inside was what looked like a beating dark blue orb. She used her magic to pull the rest of the wall down and entered the room. Arcs of pure magical energy began to dance across and off of the surface of the crystal.

The room grow cold and colder still as she approached the crystal then she heard a crashing noise from the door, whatever was after her didn't mind the extra effort to get through the door as it slammed at the door again. This time, however, the door cracked.

*CRACK*

*CRACK*

*CRACK*

Splinters shot into the room as the door gave way, more and more with ever slam from this unknown creature.

Trixie saw the pillar begin to crack more and more; soon it would shatter leaving nothing but the frail door to keep the creature at bay and that would only last for a scant few seconds more. Trixie backpedaled closer and closer to the crystal. It she would have looked she would have noticed that the orb in the center of the crystal pulsed faster the closer she got.

After zoning out and continuing to backpedal, Trixie's flank bumped the crystal and an arc of magic shot out to her horn and began to rip her very life force from her body until she dropping to her knees. She cried in pain as the crystal ripped more and more life from her body, her vision began to fade but then at the very point of blacking out the crystal stopped gorging it's self on her and began to shine.

Glowing brighter, the orb in the center sucked in the crystal and floated in mid air for a few moments, then began to lower to the floor and gently set down, then a crack and another then it exploded filling the room with a thick fog.

The crashing at the door stopped, whatever it was had been scared off by the sudden explosion. Dazed from the loss of well her life force Trixie looked at a silhouette of some kind, after getting a good look at it Trixie passed out.

It was a dark blue Unicorn.

After a unknown amount of time Trixie came to. Lifting her head up off the floor and rubbing her head. "Uh... what happened." Then she began to remember everything. She looked where the crystal floated but it was gone, she then looked around the room. Nothing. After trying to stand a few times she finally made it to her hoofs and stumbled out of the secret room into the main hall of the ruined complex there stood a unicorn one she didn't know.

"H hello?" She asked

The pony didn't bother to turn around it just stood there looking at the pillar as if contemplating something.

Trixie was scared but in no way was she about to be ignored so she shouted this time. "Hey! I'm trying to talk to you."

This time she got it's attention. It sighed then turned around to face her not saying a word.

This time Trixie got a good look at it. It was a stallion, maybe as old as she was or a little older, it was hard to tell. He had some kind of metal cylinder embedded on both sides, right where pegasus wing would be. He also had a blue gray snout and stripes on his legs, back, and head. The one thing that really drew her gaze was his eyes; they were light blue, almost teal looking, but his pupils made her feel uneasy. They were just like dragons eyes, and glanced at her with a penetrating gaze

She wasn't to sure what to say to him so... "My name is Trixie, whats yours?" He kept looking at her then his mouth begin to open then shut like he was rolling something in his mind then he spoke.

"Greetings Lady Trixie, I am Night Sky, it is a pleasure to meet you. Might I inquire as to where we are and why thou is so... un kept?"

"Huh?" Trixie was a bit confused as to why he talked like that but decided to ignore it. " If you must know I was chased by a monster that seems to have left thankfully."

Right on cue something rammed the door hard splitting the pillar in two. The two turned and watched the door. Night sky backpedaled to where Trixie stood and waited for whatever it was that wanted its meal so badly. With one final crash the door shattered into splinters across the floor. There in the door way stood a hungry manticore.

The manticore locked both of them in it's sights and walked into the room creating a now inescapable death trap. Trixie sank to the floor and began to cry. Night stood there with a small grin on his face, he turned his head to Trixie and said. "Milady just stay close to me and you will be fine."

Trixie looked at him like he was a mad pony but, then again, he did just come out of a giant mana crystal. She shifted from him to the manticore, the beast menaced and drew closer, confident it was going to get two helpings of pony and go home happy.

Trixie was shaking even harder now that the manticore was almost on top of them. The beast raised its powerful paw into the air, Trixie cringed and closed her eye tight as the paw descended onto them. Then a flash and another again and again, Trixie opened her eye just a bit to see some kind of shield around the two.

Night tuned to Trixie and offered her a hoof to help her up then said. "Lady Trixie, I believe its time for us to go."

The two walked past the manticore as the beast thrashed its hardest at the shield. Trixie could see the helplessness in the manticore's eyes as the prey walked away and it could do nothing to stop them so it sat in the door way and whimpered for it's empty stomach was not going to be filled this night.

"W-where did you lean this shield spell?" Trixie asked.

"It's nothing special, it's just a shield spell they teach at the academy." Night responded

"No they don't at least not any where I've seen." Trixie said

"Pray tell, were you not required to learn it?" Night asked

"No. No unicorn is required to learn spells and most never even set foot in an academy." Trixie said.

"Hmm, most odd." Was all Night said.

"so... what are those cylinders in your sides for?" Trixie asked.

"Hm? Oh well these are -” Was all Night could say before a thunderus roar echoed through the air followed by heavy thuds.

Trixie turned to see a hydra charging straight for them; Its three heads licking their lips in anticipation of the two pony meal it was surely going to receive.

Night turned to face the beast as his horn began to glow a dull blue and several trees fell in the hydras path which it crashed through like twigs. The hydra launched one of its heads forward to take a tasty bite of pony. As the head drew closer its mouth watered and began to open wide. The hydras head crashed into the shield.

At first the hydra was confused and just looked at the ponies. Trixie sighed feeling relieved, and turned to Night to say something when she noticed that he was eying the shield closely. She turned her head to see what he was looking at and the shield had a small crack right where the hydra hit.

The hydra couldn't under stand what it had done wrong. Why wasn't it enjoying a tasty bite of pony, it seemed to shrug and just deiced to do the next best thing which was to just smash it's heads against the shield over and over again. As the crack grew larger Trixie could see a look of satisfaction in it's work at continued to smash it's heads against the shield.

"Lady Trixie, stay here." Night stated then darted out of the shield and into the open quickly levitating a large branch and lobbing it at the hydras heads. The branch hit the hydra hard but also shattered into pieces. The hydra was clearly not happy about being attacked; it was the predator and they were the prey. The beast turned to face the gutsy unicorn.

Night turned and ran back behind a large tree looking for more things to throw when he spotted a small boulder covered in moss. "This will do just fine." Night thought to himself pulling it from the ground with his magic. With his weapon next to him he dashed around the other side of the large tree catching the hydra in his sights, he launched the boulder at the hydra scoring a direct hit on one of its heads which fell limp, clearly unconscious. He smirked confidently.

Now the beast was mad and readied its self for a real fight. It jumped forward at Night swinging one of its heads at him while using the other one to keep an eye out for other flying objects. Night threw up a quick shield and jumped back as the hydra’s head smashed right though his shield nearly getting him in the process. Acting quickly, the hydra stepped forward while using the same head for a powerful upswing catching Night right in the head and chest sending him 7 meters back and at least 5 meters into the air.

Trixie saw the quick actions of Night sky and was impressed but cringed as the hydra got its hit in sending him off behind the large tree and out of her line of sight.

Reacting quickly Night jumped to his hooves and focused magic to his horn, building a charge quickly. The hydra now set in a full out charge right for him. Night barely dodged the attack landing squarely on his hoof he took aim and fired a beam of light. The light crashed into the hydra’s back, sending scales flying and leaving a scorch mark in it's place. Night was aiming for its head but settled for the direct hit on the hydra itself.

The hydra jumped to the side while tuning around clearly trying not to be blasted again, then charged the unicorn spreading it's two remaining heads out wide so not to miss the unicorn again.

Seeing this Night started to focus his magic as he turned and started to run toward the large tree; if he could get there first he could take cover and line up another shot. But he was not fast enough as the hydra, still charging him, swung it's head and hit Night hard causing him to black out and sending him through the air back over to where Trixie was.

Trixie's eyes widened with fear as she saw Night sailing through the air toward her. He hit the top of the shield very hard, skidding off the top and falling a few hoofs past the shield onto the ground. After what felt like forever Night began to rise again this time however his eyes were glowing, Trixie looked at him, his face was cold and emotionless. Night jumped atop the shield and his horn began to glow and ice creep over his horn.

Trixie turned to see the hydra coming around the tree and Night fired what looked like an Ice ball at it. As soon as the ice ball hit the hydra was frozen in place by ice. Amazed, Trixie looked back to Night as his horn started to glow again but brighter then last time and she noticed a smirk slip over his face. Trixie wasn't sure if there was such a thing as offensive unicorn magic but she was about to find out.

Night Sky locked onto the frozen beast, a small blue ball formed just above his horn , achieving a critical mass and discharging a bright beam of light. The very moisture in the air around his horn and the beam evaporated into steam before Trixie's very own eyes. Then with a sicking crunch and splatting noise the torso of the hydra dropped to the ground missing the rest of it's body.

Whatever possessed Night Sky seemed satisfied at it's work and the shield faded as he passed out and dropped to the ground right next to Trixie, unconscious and bleeding from several bad cuts along his body.

Trixie know what she had to do; she had to rush him back to Ponyville for medical care lest he bleed out. She was not excited at the prospect, after all she had just only ran away from there not even a day or two ago. She levitated Night Sky’s unconscious body onto her back, took a moment to get her bearings from the stars, and set out in the direction of Ponyville.
