Alone in the Night

The First Star

Twilight relaxed for the first time that day. She was glad to be home, to finally be able to get her mind off of last night's events. Even though she was still worried about Fluttershy, she was certain that it would be better now that Fluttershy was with someone she could confide in.

Slowly Twilight got back into her usual routine of studying for hours on end. When she finally took a break to satisfy the thunderous growls coming from her stomach, the sun had already set and the moon was begining its ascent into the sky. After eating a simple sandwich, Twilight stopped by her balcony, looking briefly out at the night sky. Her mind began towander when she suddenly took in a sharp breath. Fluttershy came to mind, causing Twilight to begin to worry again. Deciding that she could wait no longer to get her answer, Twilight left her library home.

Once again, Ponyvile was the quiet, empty husk of the town it is during the day. But now was not the time to focus on that. Twilight needed to know what could possibly bring tears to the eyes of her gentle pegasus friend. Time passed quickly as Twilight went through the town and surrounding area towards Fluttershy's cottage. Once again Twilight heard the noise, the sound that broke her heart, the sound of Fluttershy crying. Twilight's pace only increased when she heard it. Within minutes Twilight reached the cottage, and inside the same scene was unfolding. There on the couch was Fluttershy, tears staining her face, sobs wracking her whole body. As the crying continued, Twilight's heart broke further and further. Finally, she couldn't take it anymore. She walked up to the door and knocked. Inside, Twilight heard a small squeak, followed by the sounds of the pegasus composing her self. Then the door opened just a crack.

"He-hello,Twi-twilight. Wh-what are yo-you doing out at th-this time of night?" Spoke the timid mare that stood behind the door.

"Fluttershy, I came because i found you crying last night. Today I tried to find you, only to be reminded of the fact that today was your and Rarity's spa day. But it really had me worried Fluttershy. What in Equestria could cause you so much pain. Why didn't you tell anypony? You should know that we are all here for you. So please Fluttershy, tell me what is wrong." Twilight pleaded at the pegasus. For a few moments, Twilight was worried that Fluttershy would hide away whatever was the cause of the pain. Then, their eyes locked, both seeing the emotions deep within the other's heart. Twilight saw the happiness and joy that she had come to know of Fluttershy. But she also saw something she did not expect. She saw anger and distrust. The strongest of all, though, was pain. It was like a dam that was overflowing. It hurt Twilight to see that the timid mare had so much pain.

Fluttershy was seeing something entirely different. She saw the curiousity that Twilight always had, along with the confusion that usually came with it. But she also saw so much more. There was happiness, pain, hope and, most of all, compasion. That was the one that hit home for Fluttershy. The fact that somepony cared enough to come to her and help her with her problems was foreign to her. At that, Fluttershy broke down in front of Twilight. Shocked and worried by the sudden breakdown, Twilight rushed to Fluttershy's side and pulled her into a hug. Slowly Twilight led the pegasus to the couch. Once they settled down on the couch, another wave of sobs shook the pegasus's body. Twilight started to rub circles on Fluttershy's back while whispering words of comfort to the pastel mare. The two ponies sat there, many feelings and emotions passing without a word being said. After a bit of time, both ponies drifted off into the land of dreams.
