//------------------------------// // The Three Hardest Words // Story: The Three Hardest Words // by Flutterkip //------------------------------// You walk down the path, a never ending rain pouring down upon you from the dark grey clouds above. The rain slid down your mane and landed on the floor splashing gently onto the ground. The wind blew the trees, making them sway from side to side shaking off the water that had fell upon the green leaves only seconds before. You knew why you were out here surviving the torrential rain, but you didn't know if it was worth it. The time spent getting here, the possibility of not even getting what you wanted, the chance that you have. It could just... not happen. You wanted to turn back; to forget the reason you came here in the first place. Ever since you were a child, you let fear rule your life so why stop now? You could just turn back, give up just like everything else you've ever done. It would be so easy to do it, go home and just leave it, you never liked taking the hard way. So why now? You were almost there when you froze in place. The fear inside you had built up and you couldn't move. You were thinking of those three words that could make or break it over and over. The possibility of a negative answer would just ruin your life; you'd always dreamed of doing it, but when you went to do it... you just couldn't. It already felt like going through hell just to walk there, to go up to her and say those three words would be unimaginable, but you had to do it. You knew that if you were to leave it, it would be too late but if you weren't to... well, you might be able to dream about the outcome. You couldn't focus: The words going around your head, the rain pounding down on the ground and the thought of just being embarrassed. You didn't want that to happen. You thought of her; the Yellow Pegasus Pony you met on your first day here. She helped you when you were down, treated you like a normal pony whereas others would think of you as an outcast... she treated you like you were one of her family. You could vividly remember the time you spent with her. The day that she had let you help her with her with her garden, the day that you helped her look after her animals but most importantly just the times you've spent being with her. You could risk all that and for what; A possibility of being embarrassed and reverting back to your old ways? Staying inside, locked away from the outside world with no idea of what is going on around you. All these thoughts in your head, they motivated you but at the same time scared you, the three words that could make or break it whirring around inside. You didn't want to say it but... you will. You will say it to her, you will go up to her and ask her and you just hoped that she would say the same. But it just didn't feel right to you. You were getting closer but at the same time more terrified, it won't be that bad you kept telling yourself in the hope you'd be reassured by your words. You just thought of her soft voice in your head and continued onward, the rain clearing up slightly as you went onwards towards her house. You just hoped you got the answer you wanted, the one thing in your life you wanted more than food, than the things you needed just to survive daily life. The feeling of being around her made you feel... alive. In a way you had never felt before. Other ponies wouldn't understand the feelings you had towards her. Whenever you saw her your heart started racing, you felt lightheaded, you had trouble getting words out at times. They wouldn't know what you felt just thinking of her. No one knew that though, you'd kept it a secret to everypony, not even your friends knew. You couldn't trust them, you wouldn't want to let them just tell her what you felt towards her. You had wanted to do this for a long time but never had the courage. Even now, you just wanted to let her go by, oblivious to what you wanted to tell her. You could just stop now but you won't... unless you let the fear inside overtake you. You'd been thinking about this too hard, the failure aspect atleast. You'd never thought hard about the positive side of this. The chance that she accepted, the days you would then spend together. You could see yourself with her in the medows of flowers around the outskirts of Ponyville, shades of red, yellow and blue all around you and the smell of the trees. The slight sound of the birdsong chirping, breaking the silence in the air as you two just sat there next to eachother. The thoughts of this just made you want to... be with her. You were getting closer and closer to her home. It was just dawning upon you how bad your idea may be. Your fear was rising, but you wouldn't let it overtake you. You'd just go there and say it. Say it and take whatever she says on the chin, good or bad. You just had to make sure you wouldn't break down if she said no, especially infront of her. The walk felt like it took hours but it was only 20 minutes at most. The rain was still pouring down but it was stopping slightly, the sun started to peer out from the clouds and the wind had died down to just a gentle breeze and the looked up at the sun, promising you would do it. You got to Fluttershy's house and knocked on the door. She opened it up and looked suprised that you'd walked there in that downpour. You just looked at her and said the three words. "I love you."
