Chapter 1: Learning to Count

Chapter 1

The sky was a golden hue; the sun began to set on the horizon of Canterlot as a unicorn named Mixed Number, a sky blue pony with a light silver mane, finished his first day of work at his new job in Canterlot Castle. He’s the assistant to the head of the treasury, a pony by the name of Gold Coin. And although this was only Mixed Number’s first day working in Canterlot, he’s already taken quite a liking to the new job.
“Hey, can you close the safe for me?” Gold Coin asked from behind his thick wooden desk, behind his rather cluttered desk was a large, round, metal safe door used to store the Castles physical money. “I forgot to close it again…” He would close it himself, but he was too busy looking over a pouch of golden bits.
“Um… sure.” Mixed Number replied. He, too, was sitting behind a desk, a little off to the side, perpendicular to Gold Coins fancy work table. “So are you that in focus with that pile of bits?” He smiled lightly over at his new friend, and then looked over to the large metal door behind Gold Coin. His horn glowed a cool blue color, and the safe door began to close. The turn wheel on the safe door spun shut, locking the gargantuan door in place for the night.
“Yeah, shush, I’m trying to work…” He whispered passively, his light blue eyes still glued to the pile of bits, analyzing each individual one under a magnifying glass attached to a positionable stand. Gold Coin was a rather dashing white coated pony, with a light golden mane that went down to the middle of the side of his neck. “Hm…” Gold Coin cocked his head to the side once. “These coins are good… Good. It’s too much trouble having to report a counterfeit bag of bits.” He yawned into his hoof and pushed the bits off aside, along with the pouch they came in.
“You can tell just by staring at it?” Mixed Number looked almost slightly impressed; smiling at Gold Coin, then back down at the book open on his desk. “Good for you.”
“Ahaha, smart ass…” He snapped back, dusting off his hooves as he rolled his eyes. Gold Coin hasn’t been around Mixed Number for very long, but they already behave like a married couple. “It’s almost time to go, are you ready?” Mixed Number closed his book and hopped off of his desk chair, his hooves making a light clop on the furnished wooden floor.
“I’ve been ready, just waiting on you so I can lock up.” Mixed Number said with a yawn, walking towards the double doors that led to the Treasury, the room they are in is the size of a school classroom.
“Oh! One more thing, before we pack up.” Gold coin exclaims as he hops out of his chair. He pulls open one of the drawers with his hoof and pulls out a small plastic tub with his mouth. “Mnf…” He sets it down on his work table.
Mixed Number lets out a sigh and walks back over to his boss’s desk. “What’s that for..?” He groans lethargically. He rests his chin lazily on the desk, looking at Gold Coin with a blank stare.
“Just need you to go down to the morgue and collect the unclaimed jewelry from the coroner. He’s a friend of mine; just tell him I sent ya.” Gold Coin instructs, flashing Mixed Number a white smile. He reaches up with his hoof and pats Mixed’s back. “Don’t take too long.”
“Right…” He replied with a raised eyebrow. He lifts his chin up and picks up the tub with his mouth, and through his teeth, he says. “Back in a sec.”
“Oh, it’s worth mentioning: My friend down in the morgue is quite the character; he prefers to be called Schizo Phrenia.” Coin said with a smile, waving bye to the new assistant.
“Uh… a-right, Schiza Phrenia.” Mixed number gave Gold Coin a puzzled look, his words a bit distorted from the tub still being held in his mouth. Gold Coin nodded with a smile: Kinda glad I don’t have to go down THERE anymore, too many dead things. Coin thought to himself as Mixed Number walked off to the morgue.
