INTERMISSION: Scope News broadcast of New Eden Gate aftermath

I REALLY wanted to do this. I planned for it earlier but I forgot to start on it once I got Part 6 out.

This short intermission is about when Scope News comes back to the system a few hours after the gate collapsed to discover as to what became of the Federation fleet. Enjoy!

A small, robotic camera drone fly by a large section of debris from a Thanatos-class carrier in the midst of the blue ionic field, it’s tiny camera arm moving left and right. A tiny, built-in spotlight moved in coordination with the camera, it’s bright light shining down upon the charred and shredded ship wrecks of a once proud and mighty Federation fleet. The drone took an abrupt left turn into the exposed cargo bay of the massive carrier. It moved along slowly as to avoid hitting broken-away pieces of the bay’s interior. After looking around for a few minutes and finding nothing of interest, the drone turned and flew out of a large, gaping hole through the ceiling. It continued to fly upward, being careful as to avoid the passing debris of other ships. It finally slowed to a stop, then turned back to face the Thanatos so that it was viewing the ship from above. The ship’s bow and stern were separated from one another, each piece being only a few meters apart.

The camera arm moved around and zoomed in upon the back half of the ship. It’s zoomed furthered down to show three large, bold white letters inscribed along the far end of the charred hull.

The camera then moved to the front half of the ship and zoomed in upon a second set of bold letters.

-CTACLE

“...and as you can see ladies and gentlemen, the devastation here at the site of the New Eden gate collapse is absolutely horrendous. So far, there have been no reports of survivors of the blast, and every ship that was stationed here is either destroyed or missing. Among the wrecks, our Scope News observational drone has discovered the wreckage of the legendary fighter carrier, the GFC Spectacle...”

The camera zoomed out so that’s both halves of the ship were in it’s full field of vision.

“The Spectacle has served within the Federation Navy for over twenty years. She has seen action in numerous, bloody battles across the galaxy. She was even present during the invasion of Solitude, when the Ammarian heir Urian Kaddur led the attack on a Federation-controlled military station. She was scheduled to be decommissioned two weeks from today, yet for the time being, she was ordered to report to the New Eden gate outpost to serve as bulk reinforcement. A sad fate for such a marvelous vessel...”

The drone turned it’s camera away from the hulk, then continued on it’s way through the blue cloud, making occasional stops at the split pieces of battleships and whatever remained of a few battlecruisers. The drone soon found a somewhat-intact half-section of a Talos-class battlecruiser. It took it’s time to squeeze through a small opening above the bridge section, which was surprisingly still attached to the ship. The drone’s spotlight switched on in the midst of near blackness, only to reveal to the camera a rather disturbing sight. The scorched yet hardened-by-ice bodies of the ship’s crew were scattered around the bridge, some of them in more than one piece...

There was little else to see other than the floating bodies and a few sparking wires. The drone exited through the same hole from which it came in, taking extreme caution as not to get it’s camera arm caught in the twisted metalwork, where it soon continued on it’s way, flying by and stopping at any intact wrecks that it may have found ironically interesting. After little luck at finding any other intact hulls, the drone turned around and readied itself to warp out of the field...only to slam into the broadside of a very large piece of ship-steel. After backing away from it’s sudden collision, the camera arm thankfully intact, it saw that what it ran into was a piece of loose ship plating, still firmly attached to an unknown object. The drone backed up even further, to get a more distant view, until it was looking upon the stern section of what appeared to be a massive ship. The engine nozzles were dark, most of them broken away and in pieces. Whatever ship this engine was attached to, had to be absolutely huge, for the plates that surrounded the nozzles were as big as houses. An engine of this size, bigger even than that of a dreadnought, could only mean one thing...

“This just in! Our drone seems to have made contact with the main engine section of an unknown vessel...”

The drone immediately turned and made a short burn away from the engine. Once it’s onboard systems had measured that it was around twenty-five kilometers away from it, the drone stopped and turned to get a full-eyed look of whatever lay behind it.

The vessel it looked upon was in three colossal pieces, only a few meters apart from each other. The engine was at the back, the bow at the front, and the mid section was in between. Each section was dark and void of near-visible light, the only exception being the luminescence of the cyan-colored gas cloud around them. Just by looking at the front section alone, anyone, especially a Gallentean, could easily tell what it was...

“Could...could it be...?” said the announcer with pauses for emotional takeover, “Ladies and gentlemen, this just in! Our observational drone has just discovered the somewhat-intact wreckage of the Gallente fleet admiral’s command ship, the GFT Endar Spire!”

The camera zoomed in on the hulking remains of the Titan, then onto the trace letters that signified the ship’s name.

“The force of the blast seems to have split the Titan into three separate, yet intact sections. From the look of the Titan’s current position, it must have been approximately thirty kilometers away from ground zero...oh...ok, right away sir...” the announcer paused before continuing, “Unfortunately, as much as we love delivering the latest breaking news straight to you all, the vice admiral of the Federation Navy has just informed Scope News to halt the broadcast until proper clearance has been given. We apologize for the inconvenience.” the feed went black after the news station’s generic apology, then it switched over to the Scope News standby logo.

“As always, we thank you for tuning into Scope News Network, your one and only reliable source of news and information!”
