The Melody In Our Lives

by RedundantRedundancy

Chapter 1: All Because of A Sign...

It was beautiful. Your heart, though humble, would beat with ever-flowing pride and joy. Your hooves flew across the piano, pressing and hitting the right notes and creating the perfect melody masterfully. It would seem that nopony could match your skill. You listened to the music that you yourself had created. The music filled the room you were in.

Yes, it was beautiful.

Finally, you finished, ending the serenade in a rather dramatic way.

You stand from the chair, step away from the piano and turn to the living room of your home.

It was a fine home. One of comfort and all of its simple luxuries. You had earned it through your journey as a musician. Music had been a big part of your life, you could not see yourself living without it. It was and will always be an important part in your life...it was never going to fade. Never once, hell, not even twice.

You walk towards the door, ready for a little stroll through the city of Canterlot. The very city in which you had dreamed to live in. You had been raised in the small town of Ponyville. Yes, it was a fine and rather lovely town, but you felt as if the city life suited you best. The company of many a ponyfolk seemed to soothe you, even if most of them were complete strangers.

You exit your door and leave your house, entering the busy streets of the peaceful city.

A rather interesting fact about the city was that it was always the target of many evil creatures. Discord and Chrysalis for example. But, there were always these six mares and a baby dragon that would save the day. You didn't know their names, but you still felt as if you should thank them personally. Yes, this city does have what some would call its “glory days”.

As you walk around the busy city, you notice a sign on one of the city's most prestigious hotels.

It said: 'Concert From the Canterlot Orchestra! Two Nights From Now!'

Grinning rather broadly, you contemplate on purchasing a ticket for yourself. Perhaps you were to distracted that you had not noticed the gray mare that you had accidentally stumbled into, sending the both of you tumbling down to the concrete ground.

“Ow...” you mutter as you get up. You see the gray mare lying on the ground beside you. Realizing the mistake on your part, you help her up. You could tell she was just about your age just by looking at her. She had silky black hair and a rather well-kept body, her eyes were a brilliant mulberry. Her cutie mark was a purple treble clef. She was rather beautiful, and you couldn't stop staring at her...or her flank for that matter.

“Ahem..” her clearing of her throat snapped you back to reality. She had noticed you staring was wearing a small but visible smile on her face as she looked at you with those gentle eyes. Again, you were reeled back, away from reality. The only thing that halted your fantasy, however, was the mare speaking to you in a rather formal tone.

“I am sorry for having been in your way..” she muttered shyly.

“It's alright, it was my mistake.” you say, putting a hoof to her shoulder. A rather straightforward move, but you did it anyway. You told her of the sign and the fact that you were not looking where you were going. Upon finishing what you had just said, she brightened up.

“Are you attending the concert?” she asked.

“Perhaps.” was your simple reply.

That did not stop her. Beaming with pride, she informs you that she would be performing in the concert two nights from now. That almost made up your mind. Of course, being you, you did not mind watching this beautiful mare play in the concert. All you had to do was clear up anything that conflicted with the concert's schedule.

“Well, I guess I shall be going,” the mare said and walked away as you wave goodbye to her. Smiling you head the opposite direction, whistling and trotting in a rather carefree strut.

Then you realize something...

You hadn't even gotten that mare's name!

You smack a hoof on your face, ignoring the pain, but paying FULL attention to your apparent idiocy.

“Grr...” well, that took away the carefree strut. You walk slowly, disappointed at the sudden realization.

Sitting down on the grass, you gaze up at the clear blue sky and think back on your life. The fresh, clean air helped clear your mind up, giving you the chance to remember all of the most memorable events that had transpired across the years from your childhood to your teen years to now, your adult life.

You remember your parents, all their love and support for your interests, each time you were down, they helped you get up. They celebrated with you each time you were happy. You remember those days back in Ponyville, all of your friends, your siblings, the simple little house that you used to reside in. Heck you even remembered your enemies and those that seemed to oppose your interests, hobbies and even attitude.

You close your eyes and inhale the fresh, crisp air of Canterlot's public park. Unlike most of Canterlot's posh and defined residents, you were of a simple attitude and nature. More of an alien , an outsider to be more specific. Though the residents did not exclude you from anything, it was the way you feel that did exclude you. You felt as if you did not belong to any of their sophisticated and wealthy groups. So you tended to be alone, enjoying the relaxing feeling of solitude. Yes, you did have some friends here, but you only met them occasionally, during the weekends in the city's outskirts, right where the clubs and bars were.

You smile, it was on those occasional meetings was when you would sometimes get as wild as a timberwolf.

Opening your eyes, you notice somepony looking down at you, smiling. With a jolt you realize it was that mare awhile ago.

Had she been looking for you? Had she also wanted to get your name?

Taking a subtle risk, you decide to ask her.

“Hey,” you say, smiling, “what brings you to me?”

“I was just walking along this park until I saw you,” she replies, “I thought maybe I could talk to you more.”

Grinning, you move aside to let her sit beside you.

“Um..I also never got your name.” you say, blushing only slightly.

She smiles, sending you into Fantasy Land for just awhile.

“My name is Octavia.” she says, luckily you had snapped back to reality just in time to hear it.

It was a beautiful name, yet you didn't say it. You were, as you would put it, nervous. Others would say you were shy, but you decided your own definition was better.

In turn, you tell her your name.

She smiles, “Nice to meet you.”

You shake hooves. She was warm and gentle to the touch, and you couldn't help but admire that.

You both sit there, talking. To many passersby, the two of you would seem like a young and happy couple. A young stallion and an equally young mare, enjoying these rare moments of friendship.

That night, you sit on your bed, smiling over the day's events. They had seemingly happened so fast. You couldn't believe you had made a new friend. Just because of one sign...

You chuckle upon thinking about it. You had met fatefully all because of one sign that had caught your attention.

Lying down, preparing to sleep, you look up to the ceiling, your mind replaying the events that had transpired, not wanting to let them go.

As your eyelids close, heavy with sleep. One simple thought comes to your mind.

A thought that lingered there, repeating itself.

“Is this love that I'm feeling?”
