Chapter 1

A nineteen-year-old mare named Coal Seam slowly opened her eyes to the light of the window simulation. Her light gray coat shimmered in the faux light. I wonder if there was ever a time when there was a real sun, sky, and clouds outside she thought sadly getting out of her comfortable bed for the day. Her apartment wasn’t bad. Sure it wasn’t the apartment of a descendent; a great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfoal of one of the Mane Six, but it wasn’t the apartment of a slavepony either. It had a retro checkered carpet with a bed right in front of the doorway. It had soft, cotton covers and pillows that made you fall asleep as soon as your head hit one. As soon as she managed to get a brush through her coarse, curly black and blue mane, she was off to Unicorn Classes.
Everypony in the underground society had to go to classes that fit to their pony-type. Coal was a unicorn so she went to Unicorn Classes. The ponies learned certain abilities in the class that only they could learn. Coal learned how to use her horn to help with gymnastics if a case ever arose, and how to cast confusion and sleep spells. But those were just the basics really.
As she headed out the door, a certain picture caught her eye. In it was a little unicorn filly with a light gray coat a black and blue mane. Next to her was an older colt, he had a blue coat that matched the filly’s mane and a black mane. Then came the two parents. The mare had a long curly mane like her daughters accept that it was fiery red and orange and her coat was black. The father was practically identical to the filly. He was a short black and blue mane with a light gray coat. Coal Seam, Coal Bed, Coal Fire, and Fossil Fuel. All Unicorns. A family of builders and the couple that lived. Coal’s parents had been sent out for the thing that happens to everypony when they reach the age of twenty-two, they have to go out to the mainland. Nopony knows what’s out there, and nopony ever comes back. But the Society plans for that, mating two ponies at the age of twenty, because as I said, nopony ever comes back. Except for my folks that is… The Unicorn’s parents had somehow made it back alive.
Apparently, they were hitched a ride on one of the helicopters coming to and from the Society. The governors didn’t seem to happy that they came back, but Seam and Bed were happy. I even remember some of his stories. He said that there where evil aliens that could change their appearance, and that he had to fight them. He met a rogue who claimed to be a princess, a friendly alien, and somepony among the Society that wasn’t on the ponies side. She asked him who but somepony called for Fossil and his wife over the Society intercom. Being the curious filly that Coal Seam was, she followed her parents. As soon as they got to the desired location, a black pony with a black mane with fangs and red eyes attacked the couple. He ripped out the father’s throat first and pinned her mother to the ground and ripped her back apart. He got a quick look at the filly before she ran away, but he flew in front of her. “Well, well, well. A little lost filly. Maybe I’ll give you a taste of what your mother got. After all, I love poor defenseless, fillies.”
Coal didn’t remember what happened after that, but she remembered him pinning her down, and then all went black. The next morning, the doctors said that she was lucky to survive since the Apple family and Professor Aura had stopped by to save her from her attacker. He got away though, the raper/murderer.
The unicorn shook the thought as she trotted towards the meal hall, but as she reached the doors they closed.
“Buck.”
“Eenope.” Said a familiar voice holding a plate.
“Cortland Apple!” smiled Coal.
Cortland was a member of the descendant Apple family. He lived with his parents, Wealthy Apple and Paula Red, since they didn’t have to fight due to the fact that they were the closest thing the Equestrian Society had to the Elements of Harmony.
“Thank the Society that you were here, I would’ve gone hungry!” Coal took her helping and headed back for her class. “If I’m late, I’ll be cited for-“
“I think you’ve already been cited Miss Seam,” Said a chilly voice.
“Sorry Professer Aura.”
The unicorn professer looked very angry. He was a mean old stallion that hated everypony. “I suppose that I’ll just turn this in to the president now.” He smirked in an evil way as he left in the direction of the elevator.
Featherhead thought the mare as she cantered towards her classes, without any interruption this time.
