TWO OBLIVIOUS UNICORNS

Chapter One

“Twilight, I simply cannot thank you enough for taking the time to meet me here.” Rarity spoke just before taking a sip from a glass of iced tea.

Twilight Sparkle replied after taking a sip from her own drink, “Of course, Rarity. You know I always try to find time for you and the other girls.”

The two unicorns both sat at a table outside the local café in Ponyville as the sun raised only hours ago by Princess Celestia shone down on the town.

In what started off as just another average Tuesday at the Golden Oaks Library for Twilight Sparkle, with the lavender unicorn reviewing several tomes written by Clover the Clever, when the white-coated dress maker arrived and asked Twilight for a mid-morning drink between just the two of them. After leaving Spike in charge of the library until she returned, Twilight obliged Rarity’s request.

After a couple moments of peaceful silence between the two friends, Rarity spoke.

“There is a certain reason as to why I’ve invited you to spend some time with me actually; not that for the simple company isn’t enough mind you. Nonetheless, it’s something that has been distracting me since yesterday; and I’ve been wondering if you could help me with this little dilemma.”

Twilight gave her friend a sincere smile. “Of course Rarity. I’d be more than happy to help you deal with whatever it is that’s bothering you.”

Rarity hesitated before giving a response; “Why thank you Twilight.”

It was then however that Twilight noticed that Rarity also had a slightly saddened look on her face. “Rarity, is something wrong? Is whatever’s going on getting to you that much?”

Rarity for her part looked up in slight surprise, “Oh no, it’s not my current issue darling. It’s…” She paused, looking for the right words; “…it’s just that I’m amazed that you’re still so willing to help out me and the other girls after… well… what happened at the wedding.”

Twilight felt a small pang of pain in her chest. Oh she remembered that day all too well; as did everypony else that was involved.

“Rarity, that was over a year ago, and you know that I’m not blaming you or the others for what happened. All of it could be traced back to the Changeling Queen foal-napping Princess Cadance and taking her form. Everything else was just fallout from that overgrown insect’s actions.”

That did little to soothe the dress-maker’s inner pain; “Yes darling, I’m aware of that. But we still treated you so poorly when you needed us the most; and that was before any of us knew the truth about everything! You’ve done so much for us Twilight, and we just-” Rarity would have continued with her rant; if only she wasn’t cut off by Twilight herself.

“No! You had every right to be mad at me at the moment! I was acting like a spoiled foal, causing such a huge scene in front of all of you; when I could have just as easily and more calmly took Princess Celestia aside and told her what I saw!”

Rarity yelled back at her, “You mean like how you tried to do with us the night before the rehearsal?! Even then we didn’t believe you! You clearly saw what that… that… despicable creature did to your own brother and we were too caught up in excitement for the wedding that we blew you off!”

Finally, after all of the shouting, both unicorns stopped too look around the rest of the café. Almost all of the other customers were looking right at them. Embarrassed that they’ve created a scene, Twilight and Rarity gave quiet apologies to the crowd then lowered their heads in silent shame.

The table and the atmosphere around it had become very uncomfortable as both unicorns sat in silence, unable to think of anything else to say to each other. Finally, Twilight looked up to face her friend, noticing that the white coated unicorn was doing the same to her.

“Rarity,” She said in a much calmer tone, “I know what happened on that day still isn’t something we’re going to just get over…” Twilight then gave her a genuine smile, “…but we wouldn’t be great friends with each other if we weren’t feeling this way about it. Am I right?”

Rarity seemed to take Twilight’s soothing words with a sense of relief.

“Yes… you’re absolutely right dear.”

After another moment of silence between the two, this one being far more upbeat, it was up to Princess Celestia’s student to once again break the ice.

“So, what was this favor you wanted to ask me?”

That question snapped Rarity out of her solemn trance, “Ah, yes. Well, a couple of days ago, I was doing an inventory on the dresses I had made in the past. Eventually I came across the dress I wore at the Grand Galloping Gala. Needless to say, looking at that dress brought back some memories. There were a couple pleasant ones sure, but… it also brought back the moment my heart was shattered the moment I started to socialize with… him.” Rarity finished with a touch of venom on her tongue.

However, she noticed Twilight’s slightly scared look on her face. “Don’t you worry darling. I’ve already shed enough tears as it is on that subject. It’s behind me now.”

Twilight gave a sigh of relief before giving a quirky response, “Good. Because I was a little afraid you were going to ask me to help you hunt Blueblood down.”

“Hardly.” Rarity responded with a slight giggle in her voice, “However, I’m still a pony who dreams of someday having a-” she looked around her, making sure nopony else was listening in, before continuing in a hushed tone; “-Special Somepony.”

Upon noticing the lavender mare’s head tilting in curiosity, the white mare explained, “The reason I’m telling you this darling is that you are without a doubt in my mind the most calculating and intelligent ponies I’ve ever had the pleasure of being friends with.”

Twilight couldn’t resist the blush on her face, “Wow Rarity. I’m quite flattered. Thank you.”

“You’re quite welcome Twilight.” Rarity replied, then continued; “Therefore, if you wouldn’t mind at all…”

Twilight leaned in, “Yes…”

There was a brief pause.

“I could use your assistance in finding the perfect Special Somepony for moi. I’m certain there’s one lucky pony out there crying out for a somepony like myself.” Rarity finished.

Another pause as Twilight Sparkle digested what Rarity had just told her.

Finally Rarity asked, “Twilight? Did you hear what I just said?”

This seemed to snap Twilight out of her trance, “Oh! I’m sorry Rarity. It’s just that… well; romance isn’t exactly my strong suit.” Upon seeing Rarity’s small pout she then added quickly, “But I think I can dig up some books on dating and other romance novels I have over at the library to help. And I can even create graphs and charts to help us narrow the search. Between all of that I’m sure we can-gah!”

Twilight was cut off when Rarity lunged over the table and gave her a big hug.

“Oh thank you! Thank you thank you thank you! What would I ever do without you?!” Rarity near-shouted in joy.

Twilight could only give a small smile while simultaneously struggled to breathe.

Shortly after their agreement, the two unicorns paid their bill for the drinks and had just arrived at the library.

Twilight asked, “So how’s about we meet here tomorrow morning and we’ll get started on finding you a Special Somepony?”

Rarity beamed at her friend, “That sounds very lovely my dear. I again cannot thank you enough for helping me with this endeavor.”

“Any time Rarity.” Twilight replied as she gave her a small hug.

Rarity then turned around and began walking back to her home.

“Good day to you.” Rarity called over her shoulder.

Twilight gave a small wave then turned around, walked inside the library that acted as her home, and closed the door behind her. Just as she did so, she saw the library’s other occupant, her number one assistant, and in so many ways her younger brother figure walk down the stairs and towards her.

“Hey Twilight;” Spike began, “I just finished organizing the alchemy scrolls, Owlowiscious and Peewee have both been fed, and Lyra Heartstrings stopped by to check out a book on strange creatures and beings from other universes. My guess is more research on ‘humans.’ I really don’t understand that mare sometimes…”

Twilight gave her number one assistant a small hug. “What would I ever do without you Spike?”

After Twilight released the hug Spike then asked her, “So, how did things go with Rarity? Did you finally tell her how you felt about her yet?”

Twilight only gave a simple smile as she responded, “Does this answer your question?” With that, she then used her magic to create a sound-proof bubble around her head…

…where she at that point began to scream her head off from within.

“…I’ll take that as a ‘no.’” Spike said to himself.
