Where's Rainbow?

Chapter 1

Where's Rainbow?

It was a beautiful day outside and not a cloud was in the sky, Rainbow Dash had outdone herself this time, the trees swayed in the slight breeze and the smell of cupcakes was in the air everypony would have been outside today, a mass of colours would be around the streets but Twilight had something else on her mind.

“At last I found it!” Twilight Sparkle exclaimed in pure joy after searching for the book that meant so much to her. It was early afternoon and she had been searching since dawn eager to add to its pages, her list of known spells. “Spike! You can stop looking I found it.”
“Huh, wha, oh yeah.” Spike yawned as he came around after secretly dozing behind a pile of rather dusty books in the old library. Sleep was something spike had found was never easy to find, at least since Twilight wanted to be up bright and early, he couldn’t see why.

Twilight scoured her mind for all the spells she had memorised in the last few days, what was needed to perform them and the order of which they were learned. The floating quill, held by her magic, was scribbling furiously in immaculate writing.
“She will be there for hours” Spike said to himself, “time for some well earned rest.” Within moments his soft snoring was back in motion, Twilight simply smiled.

Everything was going smoothly and Twilight was up to her third spell in about 20 minutes, good time and the flow was coming well, Mass levitation spell – Great for heavy loa-

“Twilight! Come quick!” The door slammed open and Applejack rushed in panting, “Come on”. She said breathlessly “We have to go”.
What?Where? What’s happened?”Twilight babbled the questions in surprise to Applejacks unexpected entrance.

“No time to explain, just come” Applejack answered practically dragging Twilight along.
Together they ran in the afternoon glow, towards a destination Twilight knew nothing about. As they ran Twilight relaxed a little and took in the colours of the tree’s as the wind rushed past her face. They took a sharp turn and headed towards Sweet Apple Acres.
“What could possibly be the problem all the way out here” Twilight pondered amongst quickening breaths.

Applejack somehow quickened her pace even further and slowly gained a lead on Twilight, frustration surged through Twilight as she could not run any faster. Applejack leapt over a fence and headed straight towards the barn. Following Twilight, eyes closed, attempted the leap, and made it, just.

Surprised as she was Twilight looks up just in time to see Applejack disappear inside the barn. Within seconds Twilight finally made it to the barn and her pace slowed, chest heaved and breaths came through in ragged sobs.

“SURPRISE!”

Twilight’s jaw dropped at the crowd of onlooking ponies, unsure of what was going on “Hi, what’s the emergency?”
“YOU ARE!” Pinkie Pie Shouted excitedly bouncing up and down.

“What’s wrong with me?” Twilight said in a slightly frightened.

“Sorry hun, there’s no emergency” Applejack lowered her head in shame.

“Then why am I he-?” Twilight started

“FOR THE PAAARTAAAY!!” Pinkie yelled pre-emptively.

Confused and still startled by all the Ponies in the room, Twilight saw nearly all the people in Ponyville, she glanced around the room, mouth hanging wide open.

“I – I’m sorry if we scared you..” Fluttershy whispered quietly.

A huge smile broke out on Twilight’s face “I’m so glad all of my friends are here, but what is the party for?”

“Oh, dear Twilight, you have been working too hard lately and we figured you needed a break” Rarity explained.

“LETS GET THIS PARTY STARTED!” Pinkie said as excited as ever and with that the music started to play and everypony was drawn to its irresistible beat.

As Twilight made her way around the room greeting everyone that came to this monumental surprise, she noticed something, someone was missing, Rainbow Dash. Twilight was puzzled; Rainbow Dash was never one to miss a party, especially if it was for her friends. Puzzlement spread to concern, her breathing became heavier as thoughts of all the things that might have happened appeared in her mind.

Her friends quickly noticed Twilight’s concern and rushed to her aid, “Is something wrong Twilight?” Rarity sounded distant.

Where’sRainbowDash?Issomethingwrong?Whyisn’tsh-? Twilight blurted

“Whoa, Whoa, hold on to yourself Twi.” Applejack said soothingly trying to calm the flustered pony. “Come to think of it, she hadn’t seen Rainbow dash either, confusion spread across her face.

Where is she? Pinkie pie said, calming from party mode to a saddened moment knowing one of her best friends was not there.
“D-Did we forget to tell her” Fluttershy whispered her eyes fearful.

“Ah told her, Ah’m sure of it” Applejack said reassuringly, not altogether sure if she had actually told the speedy blue pony.

“We have to find her” Twilight said with determination that some ponies could never muster. “Has anyone seen her?”

“I think I saw her taking a nap in a tree around the lake” Fluttershy spoke softly.

All five of them rushed out and headed towards Ponyville Lake. It was getting dark, The tip of the moon rose as the last of the sun fell, casting eerie shadows across everything, green’s and blue’s turned to black and greys.

“Rainbow Dash!”

“RAINBOW, COME TO THE PAAAARRTAAY!”

“Raaaiinbooww Daaash!”

“Rainbow, hun where are ya?”

“rainbow,”

The ponies calls rang out across the valley echoing in the uneasy stillness, yet there was no reply. They were all worried about Rainbow Dash and when they reached the lake to find nopony there Fluttershy became hyperventilate, “Where is she?, Could she have run away?, Did she not like us that much?”

“It’s gettin’ late, maybe she’s gone home” Applejack suggested reasonably, trying to appear calm for Fluttershy’s sake.

“I-Wel- I-.. Yes, yes I’ll check.” Fluttershy spread her wings and by a huge amount of effort managed to lift herself up to Cloudsdale and out of sight.

“I do hope she’s there” Twilight managed, pacing back and forth, her posture was slumped as if worn out by this whole ordeal.

Some time had passed before anything happened and the ponies were still really worried about the lack of Rainbow Dash.

“Look, there’s Fluttershy!” Rarity exclaimed pointing a delicate hoof towards the yellow pony.

WHUMP! It was a less than satisfactory landing and Fluttershy was dazed and confused, but nopony waited for her to recover from her flight or her landing.

“Was she there?”

“Is she feeling alright?”

“Did she leave a note?”

Questions flooded the pony’s ears and Fluttershy tried to turn it off, “stop, please stop,” more questions came forthwith and tears welled up in her eyes as she shied away from them all.

Huddled on the grass in a ball, Twilight realised they were scaring her.
“STOP!” Twilight shouted and everypony looked to her, “let’s hear what Fluttershy has to say.”

“I well, I um, she wasn’t there” and winced as the words left her mouth as if expecting to be yelled at again.

Sorrow enveloped the group; nopony knew where Rainbow Dash was, why she was gone or how to find her. Saddened by this new information everypony knew there was no use standing out here in the cold, they trudged back the way they had come, back towards the barn in complete silence, the only noise was the soft ‘clop!’ sound as one of the ponies stepped on a rock. Everything seemed hopeless.

They all entered the barn to find one pony alone sitting in the middle of the room, sobbing, looking downward. “Rainbow Dash?” Twilight said confused yet excited.

“Yeah,*sniff* Whaddya you guys want? You’re apparently too cool for me to hang around with.” the light blue pony shuddered and did not look up.

“Oh, Rainbow-“ Twilight started but thought better of it and ran to hug her friend, everypony had the same idea and soon there was a large colourful huddle around the pony.

“We was’ out lookin’ fer you hun.” Applejack said saddened by the whole ordeal.

“I said I was coming late, remember? I said I would be moving clouds til after the party started.” Rainbow Dash said in an accusatory tone, “Did you forget about me!?”

“No, no of course not, well maybe, aw shoot. Yes, Ah’m so sorry Rainbow,” Applejack knew this whole thing was her fault.

“So, you don’t hate me?” Rainbow asked, looking up from the ground

“Aw, of course we don’t hate you.” Twilight said, “We were worried about you! But, you’re here now and that’s all that matters. Hit it Pinkie!”

The music started and that irresistible beat began once more and the ponies soon cheered each other up and danced the night away, together.

Dear Princess Celestia,

Today I have learned that friendship is something always close by and it pays to remember what you’re friends say or else the consequences can be horrible, But if you try hard enough and always stay one step ahead, you’re bound to make the right decision and always know what’s going on. It’s also important not to get carried away with your problems or you may not end up solving them at all! I hope to write to you again soon.

Your faithful Student,

Twilight Sparkle
