It has been three years since the incident with Discord. Life had been great with Celestia and Luna. Celestia is still caring for her sister and Luna is now in Equestria High and still happily with Soarin. “Big sister, do you know what tonight is?” Luna asked her big sister. Celestia looking at the date thinking, “Um… Oh no I completely forget!” It was the date their parents had died eight years ago. Every year they go to lay their parents favorite flowers on their graves. The sun was still high for Celestia always let Luna raise the moon the second before they lay the flowers. They flew to the royal garden to pick the flowers then they flew off to the graves for respect. They talked to the graves as if their parents were standing right in front of them telling them what has happened for he last year. After ten minutes Luna and Celestia had tears in their eyes wile the moon was being raised by Luna’s magic and Celestia placed the flowers carefully on the grave with her magic. “I miss them…” Luna said with her eyes full of tears. Celestia the same way told her, “I miss them to…”
They left the grave and decided to walk the rest of the way home instead of flying. Luna looked around and saw no one was outside. She looked up and saw how beautiful the moon was. “Why does everyone sleep through the moon, it’s really beautiful”, Luna said. “The moon has a dim light making it easy to sleep, the sun is bright and releases life through plants and even ponies”, Celestia said now staring at the moon with Luna. “but I bring the moon up every night and no one takes kind to its beauty!” Luna said starting to get a bit loud in her voice. Celestia then got an idea, “The moon represents love, how about you invite Soarin tomorrow to raise the moon. I am sure you two would have a lot of fun doing that together.” “That’s a great idea! Maybe that will be our night!” Luna said with excitement. “Our night? You mean your first kiss?” Celestia asked. “Yeah! I would raise the moon we would both look at the moon then to each other… I can see it now…” Luna said closing her eyes thinking of that night. “That sounds great I guess I will leave you two alone tomorrow night”, Celestia said with a big smile looking at Luna.
Luna was walking down the hallway with Soarin at Equestria High. Luna asked the question, “Hey, Soarin, I was wondering if you would like to get together and see me raise the moon tonight. I will also have a pie baked ready for you!” “Sure I’d love to come see how you raise the moon”, Soarin said with a big smile on his face. They got to Luna’s class and had to go with a hug until lunch. The rest of the day went on and Luna was really excited for tonight. She got home and got Celestia to help make a pie ready like she promised Soarin.
She went outside and prepared everything for the perfect night she had planned out. Soarin came right on time and Luna greeted him with a hug. “So shall we begin the moon needs to be up in five minutes”, asked Luna. “Sure thing I can’t wait to see how you raise the moon”, replied Soarin. They sat on the porch Luna prepared for the moment she has been dreaming of. It hit the time to raise the moon and she rose it up. Soarin watched in amazement as the sun moved away and the moon showed itself from behind the mountains. The moon was up high and Luna was looking at the moon and also watching Soarin closely for the right moment.
When she was ready she turned to Soarin. Instead of him looking toward her he let out a big yawn and rubbed his eye. “You okay Soarin?” asked Luna she was afraid that it was… “I’m just a bit tired that’s all”, Soarin said. The one thing Luna didn’t want to happen did. “I’m going to go on home to bed. This was a great experience I love you Luna”, after Soarin saying those words he gave Luna a big hug and flew off back to home. Luna come running into her home crying. Celestia went up to talk to her. “What happened?” Celestia said. Luna trying to dry her face replied, “He got tired, why does no one enjoy the moon I raise everyday. The moment it comes up the very thing my cutiemark is for and it is shunned by everypony in Equestria.” Celestia tried to get her little sister to look at her, but Luna was fighting her off as she wanted to be alone.
Days went on and Luna seemed to have not enjoyed raising up the moon anymore she would still do it, but she would look around after doing so seeing all the ponies going inside to get ready for bed. Celestia would watch her out the window every night watching her look at all the ponies go off to bed. She thought she could talk to Luna and try to cheer her up. She went up to her room and walked in calling out her name, but to her surprise Luna was gone. The window to her balcony was open and a book was left wide open on her bed. She looked at the page the book was in. It was a dark spell. A spell that was powerful enough to put Equestria in a never ending darkness. Night time would last forever if Luna succeeded at this spell.
Celestia ran out of the house searching for her younger sister, but she was no where to be found. She thought where would the best place be to use that spell. Then it came to mind, on top of the highest tower in Canterlot. She looked up and saw Luna on top of the tower. Celestia flew on up the tower to find out what was happening. “Luna, what are you doing?” she asked landing on the roof of the tower. Luna turned to her sister “Everyone shuns the night that I work so hard to raise up for everypony. The least they can do is enjoy for a little wile before going off to bed, but now They don’t have to. I will raise the night forever and if anyone wants to wake up it will have to be at night. Say goodbye to your sun it will never be seen again!”
Celestia tried to stop her, but Luna used a spell from that dark book and knocked her off the tower. Celestia fell, her wings couldn’t get her to fly from how fast she was falling. “This is the end for me”, she thought. Until a Pegasus caught her before she hit the ground. Celestia looked up seeing it was Soarin. “My Luna was right you would make a great wonderbolt”, she said. “Thank you, but what is going on with Luna? Why is she up there? Why did she knock you off the tower?” Soarin asked. “She started getting upset thinking that everypony has been ignoring the moon she raises up at night”, Celestia said looking up at her sister. “That’s crazy, nopony can’t sleep without the moon. I also came over to see her raise the moon earlier”, Soarin said confused of what is going on. Celestia looked down and told Soarin about what Luna planned for them that night, and how when he yawned Luna took it the wrong way. Soarin looked up at Luna and told Celestia, “I love Luna and her beautiful moon, if I knew she was ready to have our first kiss I would have done a long time ago. Maybe it isn’t too late, maybe I can talk to her.” Soarin flew up to Luna on the tower.
“Luna”, he called out. “Soarin! I am so glad to see you”, Luna said looking at Soarin. Soarin ran up to Luna and kissed her. Luna was confused and shocked, but slowly fell under the spell of his kiss. “I have been waiting for you to do that”, Luna said. “I know that now. I’m so sorry I didn’t follow your plan…” at that note Luna looked at Soarin and said, “My plan? How did you know of my plan? My big sister set you up. You just kissed me to stop what I am about to do! You never wanted to kiss me!” Soarin was about to tell her what he told Celestia, but on that note Luna used the spell on Soarin knocking him off the tower. Celestia caught him wile he was falling. “Looks like it was my turn to return a favor”, Celestia said looking at Soarin.
When they landed Soarin hit the ground and started to cry. He has never seen Luna this upset before and she was mad at him for the first time. Celestia then had an idea. She was going to use the elements to stop Luna and get her back to her old self. The moment she was ready to go, a huge explosion happened on top of the tower. Celestia looked up and saw Luna in a new figure. She was taller darker. Luna then made an announcement, “CITEZENS OF EQUESTRIA. I AM NIGHTMARE MOON. USING MY MAGIC YOU WILL ALL ENJOY THE MOON THAT I RISE. THE NIGHT WILL LAST FOREVER! HAHAHAHAHAHA!”
Celestia was shocked at what her little sister has done. She had never seen anything like this happen to her, she was always so happy. She ran inside running to her room looking for the elements that have been stored away since the incident with Discord. She remembered she told the guards to lock them away in the vault in the right wing of the castle. She ran to the corridor and looked at Luna out the window. She had started the spell and a dark cloud was starting to fill the air. She ran for the vault and used her horn to open it. Releasing the elements stored away in their. The only thing that made her worry was that Luna was not using the elements with her this time. She didn’t know if they would work alone only for her. She ran outside Soarin still on the ground.
She looked back up to Luna and tried to think of a spell that would work. Luna was almost done covering the sky in never ending darkness. She just got the elements ready and shot a beam from her horn not knowing what the consequences would come of this spell. The elements lit up as if they did respond. As if the elements knew she was trying to save her friend, her other half of harmony. They all shot a beam following Celestia’s beam and it hit Luna directly. Celestia looked up and saw her sister flying forming into a ball of light, straight to the moon. When she flew through the clouds the sky cleared and the moon then had a mysterious mare shaped mark on it. “What have I done…”
She ran into the library trying to find the spell she used on her little sister. She searched every book she had read, but nothing was found. Then she remembered. There was a spell in the book Luna had that she saw how to use. She used that spell. She ran to Luna’s room grabbing the book reading the page. “No… I… I just sent my sister to the moon… for a thousand years! I didn’t want this! I wanted my old sister back! You stupid elements! Why did you do this to her! My own little sister… The one thing that made me smile everyday…” Celestia couldn’t believe it. Not seeing her sister for a thousand years. She then realized that she is still Nightmare moon. She had to do something. She looked at the elements and realized who she had to go to. She had to talk to the fortune teller and find out what she had to do to get her sister back.
She went to the fortune teller eyes full of tears. “Ah Celestia I foretold you that you would come on this very day”, the fortune teller said. “No time for this Cookie I need you help on how to get my sister back”, Celestia said. Cookie then told her what she must do, “You must wait the thousand years for her return. There are four stars in the sky when they come together on the moon a thousand years from now she will rise, but not as Luna. As Nightmare Moon! What you must do is reach these six pony families and spread the elements powers on them.
I have a map ready for your journey. When your sister returns these six ponies will save your sister from the darkness and return to you her former self that you miss.” Celestia looked down and said “Okay… I will do this task, but why wait for her return is there no way to get her back now.” Cookie looked out the window and told her, “The spell you used is from olden times. It was used to banish those who have disobeyed the law. There is no way to get her back. A counter spell has never been found, and no one wanted to find one either it was meant to banish the law breaker for a thousand years, no more, no less.” Celestia took the map and went home. She learned the spell Luna used to raise the moon so she would be able to do it now until her sisters return. She gathered everything she needed and set out to take care of the task she had at hand.
