Episode 18: Song Note and Sunset Shimmer

One day in the Sodor's National Forest, Song Note was out for a stroll. After an enjoyable morning of band practice with Flash Sentry and the others, he decided to go for a little walk and see the sights of a forest that Henry loved so much. Despite still being new to the Island of Sodor, Song Note was getting used to finding his way around the place without any assistance from his friends, the engines, or the local residence.

"I can now see why Henry loves this place and nature in general," Song Note thought to himself. "It looks so peaceful here."
While walking down the trail, he saw something, or someone, that surprised him. Sitting on a nearby bench, with her laptop open, was that lovely red/yellow-haired girl Sunset Shimmer, who Song Note had met when he, Flash, and the rest of the band performed at that Small Railway station. Sunset, who had some time off work, was currently watching something on her laptop she had downloaded.

"Hey, hey, it's Sunset Shimmer," smiled Song Note, deciding to go over and say hi.

As for the video Sunset was watching, the laptop screen was showing the top half of a giant white robot with a brownish orange tint within a large facility of sorts.

"They'd be useless out there," The voice of a tough-sounding teenage girl was saying in the video. "unless you wanted the enemies to shoot them."

The scene then cut to inside the robot's cockpit, where a teenage girl (Asagi Caldwell) with chin-length, wavy blonde hair and blue eyes was shown piloting the machine; she became upset with whoever was speaking about her.

"Hey, you don't have to be so mean!" The blonde-haired girl (Asagi) complained.

"But it's the truth!" The tough female voice retorted through the communication.

Inside the cockpit of another giant robot, a second teenage girl (Mayura Labatt) with short, ear-length red hair and purple eyes was shown.

"At least we can move them!" The red-haired girl (Mayura) pointed out irritably.

"Like the enemy will care about that," The tough female voice huffed in response.

Inside the cockpit of a third giant robot, a third teenage girl (Juri Wu Nien) with shoulder-length dark blue hair, amber eyes, and wearing pink wire-framed glasses was shown looking out the window at whoever was speaking to her and her two friends.

"You don't know how hard we're trying!" The dark blue-haired girl (Juri) argued.

The scene then cut to the upper level of the facility… There, a tough-looking teenage girl (Cagalli Yula Athha) with bright blonde hair, who had been speaking about the three girls piloting the three giant robots respectively, took offense over what the third girl said to her. Standing beside her was a teenage boy (Kira Yamato) with brown hair, and a young woman (Erica Simmons) with light brown hair.

"Why, you little-!" The tough blonde-haired girl (Cagalli) growled, glaring out the window at the three giant robots. "Let me give it another try!"

"Alright, alright, stop it already!" The light brown-haired young woman (Erica) demanded, before sighing over the petty bickering.

Still watching the video on the laptop, Sunset couldn't help but laugh slightly at the scene; while what she was watching was from a serious animated show, even something like that can have occasional funny moments.

"Endless Rondo," The voice of Song Note commented.

Sunset gasped, pausing the video before turning to look at whoever was standing behind her. To her surprise, it was Song Note, with his arms folded and a smile on his face, who had been looking over her shoulder at what the laptop was showing.

"Song Note?" she wondered.

"That's an episode from the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam SEED," continued Song Note. "I didn't know you're a fan of that show."

"I am; both of its Japanese original and English dub respectively," admitted Sunset. "Well, to be more precise, I'm a fan of both Japanese animation and video games in general."

"Really? I think that's pretty cool," admired Song Note.

"You think so?"

"Yup, I know so!" The black-haired boy confirmed, making Sunset smile in response. "Plus I'm a big time Mecha-based anime fan, so Gundam is easily one of my favorite franchises - I even collect and build models of the mobile suits from each show as a hobby."

The two teenagers then smiled and stared at each other for what seemed like forever, just before finally realizing what they were doing and looking away bashfully. Despite sharing a common interest in anime and video games, Song Note and Sunset both didn't really know the other well enough.

"So, um… err…" Sunset struggled to think of what to say next.

"Y-You know," stuttered Song Note. "besides loving anime and video games, I…don't really know all that much about you."

"Same here," agreed Sunset, just as she finally turned her laptop off and carefully put it into her bag before standing up. "Having only met you and taking a train ride with you once before, I really have no idea what you're like," She then smiled as an idea came to her. "However, I think we should try and change that—I'll tell you about what my life was like before I changed for the better."

"Changed for the better?" quizzed Song Note.

"That's right… I'll admit that my past isn't something I'm exactly proud of, but I figure the more I tell people about it the less it bothers me."

And so, the two teenagers walked down the trail towards the river. Along the way, Sunset told Song Note about how she used to be a big troublemaker for the railway, eventually hatching a plan for a prank that ultimately backfired and nearly resulted in the destruction of Tidmouth Station. Not only that, she also used to be a heated rival towards Twilight Sparkle at the time, but they ultimately became very good friends after Sunset decided to turn herself in and accept the consequences of her actions.

"Oh man, you were a really bad girl back then," Song Note winced, once the story was finished.

"I was," agreed Sunset. "Thankfully, I'm no longer like that. After spending almost five years working to make up for my actions, I've successfully earned everyone's trust. And, as you saw when we met that day, I even made amends with my former boyfriend Flash Sentry."

"I know that for a fact," chuckled Song Note. He then rested both hands on the back of his head and decided to tell Sunset a bit about his life. "As for me, I was your normal dude living in Canada before moving to the Island of Sodor."

Sunset nodded. "Canada is part of North America," she pointed out. "Which city were you born in?"

"I was born and originally resided in Calgary," answered Song Note. "That city is located in the province of Alberta."

"And it's also funny we're talking about Canada," chuckled Sunset, before bringing up Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. "Gundam SEED was dubbed by Ocean Productions in the seaport city of Vancouver, which is located in the province of British Columbia."

"You got that right."

"Now, go on with your story," The red/yellow-haired girl encouraged, wanting to learn more about her new friend.

"Well, the first person I met when I was out and trying to find my way around the place was Flash Sentry," continued Song Note. "I'll admit we didn't exactly have the greatest of first meetings, but after a while we slowly became best friends," He then had a mental flashback to when he joined the band. "Then, when he heard me singing and playing guitar one day, he offered me a position in his band and I accepted it without hesitation."

"Speaking of which, how did the performance go?" asked Sunset, recalling that the band had a performance that night when she reunited with Flash and first met Song Note at that Small Railway station earlier in the day.

"It went great!" smiled Song Note. "Despite it roughly being my first time performing with the band, our performance from that night was warmly praised by the crowd."

Sunset smiled back when she heard that; she was happy that Song Note, Flash, and the others did great in their performance.

"Truthfully, I'm really glad our performance was well received," continued Song Note. "You see, Sunset, our band is hoping to eventually go on a tour to perform for people in many of the other European countries and eventually for the people in North America."

"You guys wish to go on tour?" wondered Sunset.

Song Note nodded. "Yup! According to Flash, it's been a dream of the group's ever since they first started playing together," He then looked at the roaring river. "Say, that is one fast moving river."

"It sure is," added Sunset, who then, whilst grinning, started running along the river's bank. "I'll race ya down the bank!"

"H-Hey! Sunset, wait up!"

Regardless, Sunset and Song Note both laughed joyously as they started running after the fast moving river until they finally came across the end of it, which had a waterfall leading to a large, beautiful lake below. The two teenagers carefully made their way down to the area, admiring the scenery along the way.

"Wow… That lake looks so clean and pure," whispered Song Note, once he and Sunset finally arrived.

"It's perfect for swimming, too!" Sunset agreed, before smiling mischievously. "You know something, the day is far too hot! I bet a good dip in that lake would do us some good."

"Funny you should say that, I actually have my swim trunks in my bag."

"And I'm actually wearing my swimsuit underneath my clothes," The red/yellow-haired girl added, before giggling a bit. "I'll let you go and change."

Song Note immediately ran off with his gym bag in order to get changed. Three minutes later, Song Note emerged from behind some large bushes and trees wearing a pair of red swim trunks. Sunset, meanwhile, had finished changing into her black two-piece swimsuit, and posed with a wink the moment she saw Song Note return.

"What do you think?" flirted Sunset.

Song Note felt flustered. "W-Wow… I, um… I think you look, err, wonderful," he said shyly. "I really like it."

"Thanks. Now, let's jump into that lake!"

And that's exactly what they both did. For the next hour, the two teenagers swam in the lake and even had a little snack by the shore. Eventually, they dried off with their respective towels and changed back into their normal clothing before walking down the path once again in order to head back to town.

"So, Song Note, who's your favorite character from Gundam SEED?" asked Sunset, rather randomly. "I know this is a bit out of the blue for me to be asking, but I'm rather curious to know." She then smirked. "In fact, I bet you and I could learn more about each other if we tell who our favorite character is."

Song Note thought about it. "Hmm… I actually have several favorite characters - far too many to list if you ask me," he answered. "However, I'll instead tell you what my favorite line from the show is."

"Alright, I'm listening," chuckled Sunset.

Song Note cleared first his throat, and then quoted this line of dialogue…

"Kira Yamato, Freedom! Let's do it!"

Sunset froze when she heard Song Note say that line; he actually sounded a bit like the main character from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

"What?" Song Note, after a moment of silence, asked innocently.

"Oh, n-nothing." Sunset quickly dismissed, shaking her head. "It's just…I never noticed until now that your voice sounds almost exactly like the voice of Kira Yamato, the main protagonist of the show."

"Huh?" Song Note blinked, looking curious. "It does, my voice?"

"And you know something, there was one time when my friend Rainbow Dash, who knows that I'm a fan of Gundam SEED and also watches the show from time to time, and I were watching a later episode, and she brought up to me that my voice sounds extremely similar to the voice of minor character Mayura," The red/yellow-haired girl went on. "I'm sure you already know about her, but Mayura is that red-haired girl who's one of the three test pilots of the M1 Astray mobile suits, with Asagi, who is that blonde-haired girl, and Juri, who is that dark blue-haired girl with the glasses, both being the other two test pilots."

"I do know of those three girls," acknowledged Song Note. "As minor as they are, they are some of my top favorite characters from the show."

"Anyway, when Rainbow Dash brought up that my speaking voice sounded similar to Mayura's voice," continued Sunset, laughing a little bit. "I told her that's silly and not even remotely possible."

Song Note rubbed the side of his head. "I see…" he said quietly.

"Oh, I hope I didn't say anything wrong!" worried Sunset, thinking she might have said something that offended her friend.
"Because if I did, I didn't mean to-"

"Nah, it's fine, Sunset," grinned Song Note. "I'm cool with what you're saying."

Sunset felt very relieved to hear that.

(elsewhere…)

Soon, the two teenagers found themselves arriving at the nearest station, where they waited for a branch line train to arrive and take them back to town. Eventually, Percy, pulling some trucks, made a small stop beside the station on the other line due to a signal.

"Hey, it's Percy!" realized Sunset, before calling out to the small green engine. "Hi, Percy!"

Percy smiled. "Hello, Sunset," he greeted. "I'm just waiting for this signal to drop before I continue on my way."

Just then, Pinkie Pie, who was helping her Father for the afternoon, poked her head out of Percy's cabin the second she heard the name "Sunset". Upon seeing Sunset and Song Note, she waved at the both of them.

"Hiya, Sunset! And an extra special hello to Sunset's new boyfriend!" Pinkie cheerfully called out, while even referring to Song Note as Sunset's boyfriend.

"B-Boyfriend?!" blushed Sunset in total surprise, while Song Note also blushed.

"Have you two been hiking in the forest and swimming in a lake while getting to know each other?" continued Pinkie, who was randomly making accurate predictions about the day Sunset and Song Note both had. "Oh! And have you also been talking about how you love anime and video games while also comparing your speaking voices to the voices of certain characters from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED? Please tell me! TELL ME!"

Song Note was gobsmacked by how spot on Pinkie was; Sunset, meanwhile, was not all THAT surprised about it.

"I don't know how she seems to know what we've been doing," she thought to herself, just before speaking aloud. "Y-Yes, that's what's been happening."

"That's nice," smiled Pinkie, before a whistle could be heard. "That must be your train, so I'll see you later."

Soon Emily puffed up to the platform with her two coaches. Sunset was happy to see the Stirling Single, but Song Note was ecstatic - he loved Stirling Singles, and Emily was also his favorite of the railway's engines.

"Emily! It's great to see you!" The black-haired boy rejoiced.

"And it's great to see you too, Song Note," said Emily pleasantly. She then saw Percy. "And hullo to you, Percy. Have the trucks been giving you any problems today?"

"Actually, they have been surprisingly well-behaved," replied Percy. "Of course, you and I both know that trucks can change their minds rather quickly."

Emily chuckled. "That is true—one minute they're behaving, the next they're being their usual selves."

With that said, Song Note and Sunset both climbed into one of the coaches and sat down by the window. As soon as the Guard's whistle was blown, Emily steamed away with her passengers, while Percy puffed away with his trucks due to the signal finally dropping to green.

(elsewhere…)

Inside the first coach, Sunset pulled her laptop, which still had plenty of energy left, out of her bag and turned it back on.

"Well, since this trip will take some time, want to watch another episode of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED with me?" she offered. "I have all fifty episodes, both dubbed and the Japanese original with English subtitles, downloaded onto my laptop."

"I think I shall," smiled Song Note, moving over to take a seat beside Sunset. "In fact, I even know which episode we can watch—dubbed, that is."

"When you put it that way, lay it on me."

And Song Note explained the episode they should watch, and Sunset quickly agreed to it.

(elsewhere…)

Eventually, Emily arrived at Tidmouth Station, allowing her passengers to get off. As they emerged from the first coach and walked down the platform, Sunset and Song Note both were chatting about the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED episode they watched.

"Man, Nicol's death was brutal," Song Note was saying.

"You're telling me," agreed Sunset. "And Athrun clearly did not take it all that well."

"I don't think both Yzak and Dearka did either."

As the two teenagers approached the doors leading into the station, the pair met up with the Fat Controller.

"Good afternoon, sir," Song Note and Sunset greeted at once.

"And a good afternoon to you two," said the Fat Controller pleasantly. "Did you enjoy riding with Emily?"

"We sure did," confirmed Sunset. "Plus Song Note and I got to know more about each other throughout the whole afternoon."

The Fat Controller smiled. "That's good to hear," he nodded. "Now, Rebecca, I hope you will be ready for work tomorrow."

"Rebecca?" quizzed Song Note, looking a little surprised. "I thought-?"

"Rebecca's my real name, but I prefer going by Sunset Shimmer," explained Sunset, before winking. "I bet that was another thing you didn't know about me."

Song Note and even the Fat Controller laughed. Before long, Song Note saw Flash and the rest of the band standing nearby and waving at him.

"Hey! There are my buds," he announced. "I'll see you later, Sunset!"

And the black-haired boy ran off to hang out with Flash and the others for the rest of the day, leaving Sunset to smile over the great day she had.

"A fine lad he is," admired the Fat Controller, speaking about Song Note. "Wouldn't you agree Rebecca—err, Sunset Shimmer?"

"I do agree with you on that, sir," confirmed Sunset, watching as Song Note and his friends entered the station. "I definitely agree with you on that…"

With them sharing so many common interests and such, Sunset and Song Note both have become very close friends after hanging out that day—perhaps even closer than friends. Now… I know what you all are thinking; what will the state of their relationship be like in the future? That, I'm afraid, is a story for another day.

(elsewhere…)

Outside the big station, Starlight Glimmer was walking up to the building before stopping and letting out a heavy sigh. Currently, she was feeling rather nervous about setting foot inside because she knew that a small number of people, specifically both Twilight Sparkle and Applejack, and a bunch of the engines were likely still mad and not able to trust her.
"I shouldn't really be doing this," Starlight groaned to herself. "But, deep down, I know I'll have to face them all sooner or later, so I might as well go and get it over with while hoping for the best."

As the light purple and turquoise streaked-haired girl took a few steps forth…

*SMASH!*

…she was ran into by somebody, sending both herself and the boy onto the ground.

"Song Note, are you okay?!" cried Flash, running over to see if everything was okay.

Song Note rubbed the back of his head. "I believe I'm okay," he replied. "That fall did hurt a little bit though."

The black-haired boy was helped up by one of the band members; he then turned his attention to the upset-looking girl he accidentally bumped into while exiting the station, who was trying to get up after being knocked down.

"I'm so sorry!" The light purple and turquoise streaked-haired girl (Starlight) apologized hastily, but was surprised when a kind hand was held out to her. "Huh?"

"My fault," smiled Song Note, not holding a grudge or anything. "I wasn't looking where I was going."

Starlight stared at the boy for a few seconds before accepting the hand and being helped to her feet. Soon, Song Note, Flash, and the band continued on their way, while Starlight, forgetting what she was trying to do in the first place, just stared at Song Note until he was gone; there was a noticeable blush on her cheeks. Oh boy, I can tell this will lead to something happening in the near future, wouldn't you agree?
