//------------------------------// // The Only Chapter // Story: Marry Me // by taurusbabe1996 //------------------------------// She wants to get married, she wants it perfect She wants her grandaddy preaching the service Yeah, she wants magnolias out in the country Not too many people, save her daddy some money “Why do I have to be the groom?” Sunset pouted, her red and yellow hair hidden by a large top hat sitting on her small head. “Why can’t you be the groom?” “Because this is my wedding Sunset!” Rarity smirked. The two five-year-olds were playing in Rarity’s room together on a Saturday afternoon. Rarity, having been to a wedding the week before, had insisted on playing wedding and having Sunset be the groom, which her best friend wasn’t that happy about. Rarity smoothed out the ruffles in her dress and took the bouquet of flowers she stole from the hallway vase. Sunset stood at the end of the makeshift aisle in an oversized top hat and long tie, waiting patiently for the game to end so they could go back to playing with Raritys barbie dolls. Rarity gestured her head toward the teddy bear, Teddy, who was standing in as the priest. "I can’t believe I’m being married by a bear," Sunset muttered, feeling completely silly. Any embarrassment that Sunset was feeling though evaporated as soon as Rarity turned to her, clearly pleased, smiling a mega-wattage smile. "Okay," Rarity said happily, pressing play on her CD player. Soft music started playing and Rarity looked down the ‘aisle’ at Sunset, "Let's take it from the top!" Rarity took a breath slowly walked toward Sunset, suddenly looking regaled and more beautiful than ever before. Sunset could tell from the way Rarity's mouth crinkled around the edges of her tight-lipped smile that her best friend was using every ounce of willpower that she had not to break into a full, toothy grin. Seeing the happiness so clearly on Rarity's face made Sunset smile brightly herself. With her heart beating loudly in her small chest, the five-year-old suddenly decided that she didn’t mind playing wedding anymore. If playing wedding meant Sunset would get to see Rarity that happy, then she would play this game every day. I remember the night when I almost kissed her Yeah, I kinda freaked out, we'd been friends for forever And I always wondered if she felt the same way When I got the invite, I knew it was too late Sunset remembered the night she had almost kissed Rarity. She remembered that night all too well. They were 15 and had just finished play rehearsals for the day, Rarity and Sunset played the leads opposite each other, and decided to go back to Rarity's house after grabbing dinner at a fast-food restaurant. "Play video games with me?" Sunset's eyebrows quirked as she held the controllers in her hands. "Sure!" Rarity replied with a smile as she fell back onto the couch and grabbed the controller from Sunset. Sunset was winning, obviously, Rarity was terrible at video games. She only ever played them when Sunset asked her to. Something about that made Sunset love the fashionista even more. The fact that she would do something she didn't enjoy just to make Sunset happy warmed the girls heart. "You're letting me win, darling" Rarity smiled coyly. "Are you sure about that, maybe you just got really good all of a sudden." Sunset teased. "You're quite a bad liar." Rarity teased. "Oh Rarity, that hurt my feelings," Sunset frowned playfully. Rarity rolled her eyes and the two continued to play until they saw flashes of lightening in the sky and heard a roar of thunder. "I should be getting home before I’m forced to walk home in the rain." Sunset said. "Good idea," Rarity said in agreement. She grabbed her large umbrella the two girls walked shoulder to shoulder the entire way to Sunsets house. By the time they reached her house it was pouring rain, and Sunset was huddled close under the umbrella. "Afraid to get wet? Think you'll melt?" Rarity teased. "What do I look like, the wicked witch of the west?" Sunset raised an eyebrow. "But yes! I don't want to get completely soaked!" “It’s just a little rain Sunny, you’re being quite ridiculous.” Rarity laughed and Sunset scowled playfully at her. “Don’t take it as an insult, it’s actually one of the things I love most about you.” It's one of the things I love most about you. She said it. But what exactly did she mean by it? "Yea whatever," Sunset said, a hint of a smile on her face. "Oh say it Sunny, you love me!" Rarity teased, leaning in close to Sunset under the umbrella. Sunset instinctually leaned in to kiss her, her face only a few centimeters away from Rarity, who wasn’t moving away. She was about to kiss her and she wasn't moving away. Rarity's eyes were even closed now, a calm expression in her face. She wanted Sunset to kiss her! Her heart was pounding now. Just as Sunset was about to press her lips against Rarity's, a roll of thunder rumbled above them loudly and made them jump apart. "Oh SHIT!" Sunset exclaimed in surprise, causing Rarity to laugh. "That was some serious thunder, huh?" Sunset laughed, trying to act like nothing had happened. "Well, I have to get home. But we're still on for lunch tomorrow, right?" Rarity asked. Sunset studied her best friends face, to try and gauge her reaction to the almost kiss, but she was hiding her feelings extremely well behind a soft smile and guarded eyes. "It's a date." Sunset replied with a smile, waving goodbye as Rarity walked away, leaving the red-haired girl heartbroken at her front door. Bet she got on her dress now, welcoming the guests now I could try to find her, get it off of my chest now But I ain't gonna mess it up, so I'll wish her the best now “Oh my god Rarity, you look beautiful!” Fluttershy’s voice rang out softly. Sunset looked up from her phone and felt her jaw hit the floor at the sight of her best friend. Rarity's wedding dress was stunning, it hugged her body perfectly up to her hips, where it became looser to allow easy movement. The dress was beautifully detailed with small crystals and designs all over, making Rarity sparkle. Her purple hair was pinned to one side with curls, small crystals and flowers placed throughout. “Do you think Applejack will like it?” Rarity asked her friends. “She’ll love it Rarity” Sweetie Belle smiled softly. “What do you think Sunset?” Rarity looked at her maid of honor expectantly. Sunset wanted to say so much in that moment. There was less than an hour before the wedding started, and Sunset knew she still had time. She could tell Rarity right now how she’s been in love with her since they were five and she shouldn’t marry Applejack. Maybe if she told her how she felt Rarity wouldn’t get married today and she could have a second chance at love. The look on Rarity’s face is what stopped her though. There was a glow in her eyes, a sparkle, that Sunset had seen before. She knew it was because of Applejack. Rarity always got that same look in her eyes when she thought about the blonde farmer. Every time Sunset saw that look in her best friends eyes her heart would break a little, but seeing Rarity so happy filled Sunset with warmth and she didn't want to take that happiness away from her. “You look breathtaking Rarity, you’re going to drop jaws when you walk down that aisle” Sunset said with a smile. “Thanks Sunny!” Rarity beamed. “Now come on, you have to go get your makeup done!” Rarity grabbed Sunsets hand and lead the group over to the side of the bridal suite where makeup artists were waiting. Sunset relished in the feeling of Raritys hand in hers, so much so that she didn’t want to let go. But she was going to have to let go, because Raritys hand wasn’t hers to hold, not anymore. So I'm in my black suit, black tie, hiding out in the back Doing a strong shot of whiskey straight out the flask I'll try to make it through without crying so nobody sees Yeah, she wanna get married Sunset sat at the table, her chin leaning against her hand as she traced the pattern on the tablecloth with her free hand. The reception for the wedding was just getting started, but Sunset was already ready to go home. Standing right beside the girl she loved, watching as she married someone else was heartbreaking for the girl. She didn’t want to celebrate a marriage she didn’t support, she just wanted to go home where she could cry openly. “Are you planning to sit there alone all night?” A voice beside her asked. Sunset glanced over and saw one of Applejacks bridesmaids looking at her with a concerned look. She had long dark purple hair and was wearing a nice black suit like Applejacks others bridesmaids had worn. “Maybe, why do you care?” Sunset asked sourly. The girls cheeks turned pink and she crossed her arms over her chest awkwardly. “I don't know. You just looked sad, I wanted to see if you were ok.” She retorted quickly. She stayed silent a moment before Sunset felt the girls purple eyes on her again. “You’re Rarity’s maid of honor, right?” Sunset lifted her head and looked over at the girl, who was now looking at her curiously. “Yea, my name is Sunset Shimmer” “My name is Twilight Sparkle.” Twilight introduced. Sunset nodded and turned her attention to the dance floor where almost everyone was dancing. Her gaze fell on Rarity and Applejack and she felt her chest tighten as she watched them dance. The happiness and pure joy on their faces was clear to see even from this far away, and it made Sunsets heart break all over again. “Are you gonna just stand there and stare at me all night?” Sunset asked sharply, wiping a tear off her cheek. Even though she wasn’t looking at Twilight, she knew Twilight was watching her. “I was just waiting for the right time to ask you to dance.” Sunsets tear stained eyes shot over to Twilight, who was staring at the floor. Her cheeks were bright pink and her hand was extended toward Sunset, waiting for her to take it. Sunset only stared at the girl blankly, unsure of what to feel. “It's ok if you don't want to” Twilights purple eyes stared at the floor, but Sunset could tell they were full of emotion, and she felt herself become intrigued by her. Sunset was heartbroken, and she knew that it wasn’t something that would be fixed that quickly, but as she grabbed Twilights hand she had a feeling that maybe it would be fixed sooner than she thought. But she ain't gonna marry me
