Adopting Hellhounds

Chapter 9

With Blight

Blight was in unimaginable pain. The torture she was being subjected to had left her laying on her side panting heavily. It's been an entire day and night since she was first brought into the wretched room. Blight herself was in a horrible state.

There were several blessed nails driven through her back and legs. They weren't supposed to kill her, obviously. The nails were to cause her pain to beat her into submission. She hadn't eaten anything the entire time, so her stomach was in the painful throes of hunger. Countless bleeding wounds from the blessed whip crisscrossed her back and sides. Her once soft and glossy short black fur was now matted and stocky with blood and sweat. Blight panted through the muzzle drawing in short and painful pants. But her spirit did not break. Despite her pain, she did derive satisfaction from seeing the mortal doctor getting angry from her refusal to submit. He paced back and forth on the verge of tearing his own mane out.

"Damn you, mutt! I swear you're the most obstinate Hound I've ever worked with!" he shouted through his mask.

Blight gave him another defiant snarl. That only seemed to set the doctor off even more. He grabbed the blessed whip for another round of beatings when the door to the room swung open to reveal the apparent leader of the mortals with two bodyguards. He didn't seem happy with what was happening.

"Doctor, what have you done to her?!" he shouted.

"Well, sir, I've tried everything I know to make the beast submit, but she will not yield no matter I do!" the doctor yelled.

The bearded pony regarded Blight with great scrutiny. She glared at him and bared her fangs at him. The bearded one looked impressed with her grit, based on his smile. He then turned to the doctor.

"If she won't behave like the others, we can use the Holy Collars to at least make sure she doesn't attack us. Hopefully Lord Trotsky will be able to use a strong Hound like her in the ring," he said.

"And if she doesn't comply even then?" the doctor asked.

"Then you can try to continue Domestication procedures until she finally breaks," his boss replied. "Bring one of the Holy Collars."

Two henchmen brought one of the glowing Collars Blight saw on her way here. The bearded one looped the Collar around a struggling Blight's neck and fastened it tight. The light from the Collar sent burning pain shooting through Blight's entire body, earning a cacophony of whimpers and cries. Once the pain subsided, Blight laid down panting. The bearded pony smiled.

"Clean her up and deliver her to Trotsky. I'm sure this pup will be worth every bit," the bearded one ordered.

"As you wish, Chancellor Neighsay," the doctor said.

Blight made sure to pay attention to that name. She growled at him through her muzzle.

Chancellor Neighsay. I'll never forget your name or your scent. When I get out of this, you'll be the first mortal I kill, Blight swore.

If there's one thing Hellhounds never break, it's a vow to kill those who've wronged them. And Blight was going to make good on her promise one day.

With Frightfang and the Ponies

Frightfang was going with Fluttershy to what she called a "vet". He wasn't sure what a vet was, but it sounded interesting. He hoped this "vet" was as nice as Fluttershy.

The entered the building and waited for Fluttershy's "vet" friend. There were other ponies and their animal companions waiting too. Some of the animals looked healthier than others. They had the scent of illness and injury from them.

"Uh, Fluttershy, why are all these sick animals here?" Frightfang asked.

"They're here to get treatment for their ailments," Fluttershy replied.

"But I feel fine, so why are we here?"

"We're just here to make sure you stay healthy until we get you home," Fluttershy replied. "Don't you worry. Doctor Fauna is a great vet."

After what felt like hours of waiting, a pony wearing a white coat walked out of the back room and looked at a list of names on a clipboard.

"Fluttershy and... 'Frightfang'!" she called.

The duo got up and walked towards the good doctor. Fauna was incredibly shocked to see Frightfang, but that was to be expected. Then she plastered a huge smile on her face.

"Hey there, Fluttershy! Who's this little guy?" she asked.

"This is Frightfang, a Hellhound," Fluttershy replied.

"A Hellhound?! I've never seen a Hellhound before, let alone treat one!" Fauna said.

"Really? The whole town's been talking about him ever since he first showed up," Fluttershy said.

"I've been so busy with my patients that I haven't been paying attention to the local gossip," Fauna said. "Anyway, let's get this little guy checked out."

Fauna led Fluttershy and Frightfang down the hall and to one the rooms prepared to welcome them. In the middle of the room was an examination table and there was a desk and shelves full of equipment and instruments. Fauna patted on the table with a hoof.

"Come on up here, Frightfang!" she said sweetly.

Frightfang hopped up on the table and simply stood there. There was something about the doctor that Frightfang found calming. He felt safe and at ease around her. Fauna brought out a little glass instrument and touched it to his skin. The top of it read numbers until Fauna's eyes grew wide.

"This is incredible!" Fauna said. "His temperature is over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit!"

"Actually, I think that may actually be normal for his species," Fluttershy said. "Though, when he slept in bed with me, he didn't feel that hot".

"Our species are capable of controlling our own body temperatures at will," Frightfang said.

Fluttershy translated what he said to Dr. Fauna, who was excited to hear such information. Next, Fauna brought out a stethoscope and put it to Frightfang's chest. It felt really cold until his high body temp warmed it right up.

"His heart beat sounds pretty normal to an average canine," Fauna noted. "Next, we should get him some vaccines and then I'll get him some standard anti-worm medication for dogs".

"What's a 'vaccine'? Is it tasty?" Frightfang asked.

"No, it's a way for her to make sure you stay nice and healthy," Fluttershy replied.

Fauna returned to the room with a few small vials and needle-like devices. The sight of the needles made Frightfang's heartrate climb dramatically. Fluttershy stroked his head to comfort him.

"It's okay. It's okay," Fluttershy cooed. "It's just a few pricks and you'll be good to go".

Frightfang tried to calm down. He'd gotten roughed up sparring with Blight before, but somehow the sight of the needles still sent a shiver down his spine. Fauna set down her supplies and picked up one of the needles.

"Okay, first up is a standard rabies vaccine," Fauna said.

Finding a good spot, Fauna stuck Frightfang with the vaccine. Frightfang managed to suck it up until the doctor pulled out the needle. Next were vaccines for things she called "canine parvovirus" and "canine distemper". Once she was done with all the vaccines, Frightfang collapsed to the table. Fauna handed Fluttershy the pills.

"Just put his pills in peanut butter and he should be good to go," Fauna said.

"Thank you, Doctor Fauna," Fluttershy said.

"And I hope to see this darling Hound again," Fauna said, petting Frightfang.

"And I hope to never see another needle for as long as I live," Frightfang said.

Before they left, Fauna reached into a jar of dog treats and gave one to Frightfang. After sniffing it to make sure it was safe to eat, he eagerly ate the treat and left with Fluttershy. He was more than happy to not have to deal with needles anymore. In fact, the needles made him want to return home even more.
