//------------------------------// // An Accidental Communication // Story: Did...You Just Sing? // by TwiShine45 //------------------------------// Misty crept her way through the bushes outside of The Crystal Bright House. Her attempts at garnering information for her sometime boss, sometime abuser, had not been fruitful so far. In fact, Opaline was getting incredibly close to being pushed over the edge. Misty was scared that the next words out of the Alicorn’s mouth would be ones of banishment, or worse. She couldn’t return to her former life, shivering in the cold, living in boxes on the streets. Her entire existence depended upon the success of this mission, and she didn’t want to fail Opaline again. More than that, though, her new cutie mark depended on it as well. Every single aspect of Misty’s life hinged on a hoofstep or two, and she needed to be careful…silent…calculating. Of course, she was none of these things, and she knew it. But, she tried her hardest…not that Opaline seemed to notice. Nothing Misty did ever impressed the pony powerhouse. A heart of stone and ice met her every single gaze, giving her orders and offering no friendship or trust in return. Opaline was a cruel pony, wicked in every sense of the word. Her flaming eyes sparked fear in Misty’s heart, and that fear had turned into a reluctant respect. The promise of a cutie mark and a new life was enough to push her into Opaline’s service…but she felt like a clod of dirt in doing so. This was especially true as she’d grown to love and care for the ponies that she was assailing…or, at least, trying to assail. But Opaline’s will must be done, Misty thought as she peeked out from her hiding place, if not, then I can kiss my cutie mark good-bye! Suddenly, the necklace around her neck, with which she kept in constant contact with Opaline, began to vibrate. It acted in the same manner as a pony’s cell phone, only this one was controlled by magic instead of cell towers. The timing of said vibrations was odd, as Misty had not expected Opaline to check on her so soon. Yet, the wicked wannabe queen was as unpredictable as they came, so Misty shouldn’t have been surprised. Still, though, the sequence of events was weird. Misty also knew that her so-called superior would not want her to delay. So, she turned in her bushy hiding spot and, with a great deal of reserve, gently pried open the locket. She was stunned to hear that Opaline was singing! Her ears burned as Opaline sang about feeling flames and how her villainous plan would turn into a success. Misty’s mouth dropped, not because she didn’t know how wicked Opaline was, but because she never thought that her mistress would ever do something so…quaint. It was completely out-of-character and came out of nowhere, which made Misty smile. Seeing Opaline prance about in outfit after outfit, playing queen while singing at the top of her lungs, was almost too much to take. But, Misty was able to keep her composure, and she cleared her throat. “MISTY!” Opaline shrieked as she quickly turned to view her part of the locket’s portal. “Wha…how…I…” “Um…were you singing, Opaline?” “Don’t be ridiculous!” Opaline thundered. “I would never sing! I wouldn’t stoop as low as that! I am a ruler meant to be feared and respected by the populace! I…don’t…sing!” “It’s okay if you were, Opaline,” Misty said. “I mean, singing’s fun-“ “Fun?!” Opaline shrieked. “I don’t do fun, Misty! I do fear, I do power, I do malevolent maleficence! I am a being that will set this entire world on fire if I have to! I have the equivalent of a goddess’s worth of powers, and yet you have the audacity of putting my evil plans into something as pointless as a musical number?!” Misty shook her head. “Alright, I’ll take your word for it…but I have to admit, if you were singing, the song was pretty catchy.” “Oh, was it?” Opaline asked, “because, you know, I’ve been…I mean…I’m evil! I am the night! I am vengeance!” “You are Bat Pony?” Misty asked. “Bat po…I am not Bat Pony!” Opaline roared. “Have you forgotten to whom you are addressing, little child?!” “Oh, no, Opaline,” Misty said, barely able to contain herself. “I haven’t forgotten about you. I mean, I am trying to locate dragon fire and find out crystal information for you, after all. How could I ever forget about that?” “Well…you…you’d better not!” Opaline said. “Otherwise, I will tear you limb from limb! I will punish you in the worst possible way! I will serve your heart on a platter for the dogs to eat with some fava beans and a nice chianti!” “OOOOOOOOOOO!” Misty cheered, completely forgetting that she was supposed to be hiding. “I LOVE Silence of The Manes!” “UNGH!” Opaline said. “How DARE you compare me to tasteless movie villains?! I am your worst nightmare! I am the enemy of ponies everywhere! Do you know what I’d do to you if I were there right now? I’d use a futuristic artificial intelligence to create a cy-pony that would come, hunt you down, and tear your brains out!” “Oh! Oh! I know that one!” Misty said, “it’s The Ter-mane-ator! Give me another one! Give me another one!” “…you’re just going to keep making a mockery of me, aren’t you, Misty?” Opaline asked. “Well, I can’t help it if your entire pantheon of planning sounds like it came from every movie ever made.” “I AM ORIGINAL!” Opaline cried. “If you say so, Opaline,” Misty said. “Oh, by the way, your song was nice…but it needed something more.” “Once more, you pathetic little imp, I was not singing! But, even if I had been, it would have been perfect…just as I am!” Misty rolled her eyes. “Oh, come on, Opaline. I mean, really? You’re gonna strike fear into ponies with THAT?” Opaline started a bit. “Um…well…I…er…I mean, I wasn’t singing!” “Okay, okay, quit trying to deny it,” Misty said. “You were singing, and it wasn’t bad, but it just needed an extra bit of power.” Opaline sighed, somewhat defeated. “Just…get the darned information and come back to headquarters, you worthless worm.” Misty took the insult in stride, smiled to herself, and shut off her communicator.
