Equestria's Splitter

Prologue

A sigh resounded off the elaborate tapestries adorning Princess Celestia’s private study. It was late in the day and, as always, the Princess’ mood set with the sun. Piles of paperwork sat on the dark wooden desk that was placed just in front of the giant stained glass window that spread multiple colors on the otherwise bland room.

A similar sigh escaped the white alicorn’s lips once more as a particular piece of parchment sat in front of her. It was flowing with very classical horn writing, giving the paper a life unto its own. The sender of this letter was close to the Princess and her letters were normally welcome.

This time, the letter was sent as another warning of trouble brewing in the ever expanding land of Equestria. It was not uncommon as it had once would have been, which prompted the uncouth sighs from the straight-faced alicorn. The message read:

Dear Princess Celestia
,
I have troubling news from the northern border. It seems that several townsfolk of Everford have disappeared under mysterious circumstances and no explanation has been found yet. The Sasuma in the area have been operating nonstop to discover the culprit, but to no avail. I fear the worst, as there seems to be no other explanation other than the dark forces that seem to have found their way into our once peaceful land. I implore you to postpone your plans and meet this new threat. I, as well as others, would feel better about these changing times with you here to lead us. I implore you again to postpone your departure and possibly leaving your beloved ponies in peril. Please reconsider.

Love as Always,

Mi Amore Candenza

Why did she have to ask me that? Anything but that. A third sigh joined the others in the air circulating the study. Things had gotten so busy again. Two thousand years of peace could even make an alicorn complacent it seemed.

It really wasn’t fair of Candenza to ask her to put off the plan she had been attempting to accomplish before the winged unicorn was even born. It was funny really; Celestia had asked the planet, Talra, to produce such a being so that her plan could be achieved. Now that being wanted to defy her purpose and have Celestia stay and continue leading.

Luna would never allow it anyway; she wants this more that I do. And Twilight, well she wants this journey more than both of us combined. This would be the first time that any of the mentioned parties would interact as a true family; Celestia and Luna as Twilight’s parents. Celestia’s thoughts did not linger on the implications of alicorn reproduction, but it warrants explanation that an alicorn melds its soul with another alicorn to produce offspring.

It had been fifteen years since Luna’s return and twelve since Twilight discovered her true parentage. In those three hectic years between those events, Discord had reared his ugly dimensional head and attempted to destroy Celestia and Luna through Twilight.

Discord had taken control of Twilight, realizing what she was, and used her as his ultimate weapon by warping her perception of reality through supposed events that ranged from a late report to the invasion of Canterlot Castle. Real enough to evoke the physical response however he needed, he had almost overthrown the royal rulers of Equestria.

When he was thwarted, Twilight was told the truth and the long road to understanding took twelve long years. Three days ago, Celestia had received the letter she had waited one thousand fifteen years, four months, eleven days, three hours, and twenty seconds for.

Dear Princess Celestia,

I guess I should begin by breaking familiar habits, mom. Or are you my father? How does that work if you are both mares anyway? Never mind, I’m rambling in my letters again. Gah, still doing it. Anyway, I have considered your offer of a journey to better understand who I am and who you and Luna are at a personal level. I think I might have finally accepted your reasoning, despite the fact that you kept me in stasis for one thousand years and then lied to me the rest of my life. I mean seriously why would you do that? This is what we need to discuss on this journey and figure out how we, the three of us, can be a family. Not to mention the education on how to use my extended magical prowess. Please respond as soon as possible so that I can set my affairs in order.

Your daughter,

(Princess) Twilight Sparkle

P.S. Is this trip taking place in Equestria?

P.P.S. Is there a library where we are going?

It was quite cute how her title was in parentheses as if she was unsure it was applicable. It had taken Twilight long enough to accept Celestia in a new light, Celestia couldn’t help but wonder how long it would take for her to get used to her own title.
It looked like Celestia’s plan was in jeopardy now that Candenza, the pony who would rule in Celestia and Luna’s stead, was trying to back out now that it looked like she would be dealing with the dark forces left in Discord’s wake.

It was a serious dilemma. Without a familiar looking leader, Equestria could fall into chaos again. Candenza did have her point though; taking the three most powerful beings away from Equestria certainly put the whole country at risk. Celestia was not going to let chaos reign again, which meant she would have to supplement her plan with a little extra power.

Celestia began a mental check into the places she could find a being with enough power to help her, but not powerful enough to take over Equestria. She knew that Talra had already done all she could and that Discord was definately not an option. Maybe she could hire one of those humans from the Prime Demension. They were quite adept at war and were even ruled almost the same as her Queendom. But it would be too much for any normal human. Wait! That's it!

A smile broke across Celestia’s muzzle as she realized just where she could acquire some additional help for her flighty replacement.

Celestia would hire a Splitter.
