//------------------------------// // Chapter 8: Village Life Begins // Story: A New Life // by arc5162 //------------------------------// After me and Maple officially became the King and Queen of this new village, the next step was for me to set up the laws, religion and economy needed to make this village prosper. The religion was easy, I introduced to them the ancient religion of my ancestors, the religion of the irish druids. I saw this as the ideal religion to show them for several reasons. First, the druids valued the preservation of life about all else. Second, they were masters at keeping the peace. Only turning to violence as a last resort. As for the laws, that was very tough, but after searching through my databanks, I decided on The ancient Gael law system. One that was nothing like the flawed law system of the modern world. One example of this is the absence of money. Instead, Gael law used the simple Barter system, basic trading of goods for other goods. Finally, the village that me and Maple now ruled could begin to grow naturally. About 2 months had gone by since the coronation, me and Maple had been teaching them everything I know the same way I taught her, by setting up a makeshift school in the village center. Before I started though, I asked them what they wanted to do for the village, giving them a wide range of options from Guards to Judges, Druids to Filí, and craftdeers to farmers. Once they chose what hey wanted to do, I taught them everything they needed to know for their job. The guard’s job was to protect everyone from any threats to the village and to make sure the barrier was safe. The judges kept track of the Gael laws and gave judgements on them. The druids would arrange the celebrations for worshiping the gods, the Tuatha Dé Danann. The Filí would keep the history and tradition of the village. The Craftdeers would be fletchers and metal workers, making new equipment for the guards and would be responsible to building and maintaining homes. And of course, the farmers worked the land to produce food for the village so that every deer could eat. They would also go out to gather materials for building or for heating their homes. So far, they were learning really well. All of the deer who wanted to be farmers, I taught them how to till the fields and harvest the crops. I taught the guards how to handle weapons to defend the village, the fletchers how to carve, and the metal workers how to work a forge. I taught the Filí how to write down the history of any events we experience, the judges about the Gael law and how to uphold it. And finally, I taught the Druids about all of the special festivals that we would celebrate throughout the year, about the gods I used to worship, how to act as doctors to heal any illnesses or injuries, and how teach any future deer the same skills they are all learning now. They would learn all skills and be able to teach young deer whatever they needed to learn based on what they wanted to do when they grow up. Yes, everything was going great so far. One day though, during the weekend when no lessons were planned, I rediscovered something that shook me to my core, something that I thought disappeared a long time ago. I had to tell Maple. “So, what did you want to tell me, you look like you had seen a ghost”, said Maple. “I…I” I stuttered, “I was looking though my long range sensors in orbit, I discovered a signal.” “A signal, from where?” “From the colonists sent to Proxima Centauri B.” “What’s that.” “It’s a planet, one very far away from here.” “How are they there? I thought you said all of the humans died out in a war.” “Well, back before the war, humans sent a few hundred astronauts, that’s humans who go to space, to the nearest star system to establish a colony beyond the solar system since the planned mars and moon colonies had done so well. It was supposed to be a long duration trip, I had no idea they were even still out there until a few hours ago, when they sent a message confirming their arrival. Records from my time said they lost contact with them, they were presumed dead. They’re probably sending a message to confirm their arrival.” “But there’s…” “Yes, there are no humans left to receive their message, which is why I’m going to respond.” “What will you say?” “I don’t know, I haven’t talked to humans in 500,000 years.” There was a moment of silence, before I decided to speak up again. “If you want, you can watch me talk to them, you remember those English lessons, right?” “Yes.” “Good. Well, here we go.”
