A mother’s sacrifice

by General Sparky

Prologue

A dragon and a Unicorn walked down a quiet street at night. The dragon is covered in scales as dark as the night around them, his wings folded down as he tries his best to lead his horse down the streets. The Unicorn followed the dragon, her head kept low to try to avoid detection by enemy forces, which is not easy considering that she is 13 feet (around 4 metres) tall and weigh nearly 5000 pounds (2200 kg). It is only now that they are able to be in their true form, if there were other people around, they would have to quickly change back into their disguises, the dragon would change into a human boy and the Unicorn would change into a horse.

Nightlight and Goldhearts walked towards the pier, this would be the last time they would see each other. Goldhearts has discovered a spell that leads to another world, called Equestria, where they could live their lives in peace without the fear of the military coming to get them and worst still do some tests on her unborn foal. The pair arrived at a bench facing towards the ocean as they try to cherish the last moment they have together. Goldhearts bend down her hooves and lied on the ground as she wanted to be at the eye level of her rider.

He was small for a dragon, coming up to around 5 feet (around 1.5 metres) when standing at his full height and he weighs around 110 pounds (50 kg). He was pretty small in size, but he was pretty intelligent and cute, especially when he was around her. Normally they would be having a nice chat and maybe some teasing about each other’s size difference but now both of them were quiet. They looked up at the night sky, seeing its beautiful starry constellation and for the first time in a long while, it was peaceful.

“It is a wonderful night isn’t it?” Nightlight asked, glancing at the Unicorn beside him.

“It is. I wish that you would come with me, to leave this world behind and start another one, without the constant shelling and the different tests that your superiors conduct on me.” Goldhearts stated, trying to lock her eyes with the dragon.

Nightlight sighed, “I know, but it’s just not the time for me to leave this world. At least not yet. I would join you when I have settled my things here. Please take good care of the foal. I know she will be the best Unicorn ever, and that she could thrive in a world without bloodshed, without humans.”

“I know, but what will I tell her? She will be the one without a father figure to guide her. And what about me? I know I can survive in the other world by myself but it is always better to have a partner with me by my side.” Goldhearts said, looking at the dragon bright green eyes.

Nightlight looked down, trying his best to avoid contact with Goldhearts’ eyes and stated, “Tell the foal, when she is old enough, that her dad died in combat or something like that, I just want you and the foal to be happy and safe in the other world. As for you, you are an intelligent and independent mare, you can definitely survive without me. As you said, the world is filled with mostly filled with ponies, I do not think that they will think highly of dragons, I will just be a burden in your quest to assimilate to the world there.”

Goldhearts look away from her partner, trying her best to not cry in front of the one who picked her up at her lowest points, and the one who went through some of the most difficult trainings and tests the military people conduct on her. She then felt a claw at the bottom of her chin and lifting it up to face the dragon eyes.

“It’s okay little girl. You are the best Unicorn this dragon has ever met. I am proud of you and your achievements. I will always be there in your heart and your memory, I know this is last minute but here take this.” Nightlight said, as he took the saddle on his back off and place it in front of her. “You asked me just now why I wear this saddle right?” Goldhearts nodded, her eyes now focusing on the saddle in front of her.

“Well I want to give it to you, so that you will remember me. And also, inside there are some dresses for you and your foal and some weapons that should keep you safe in the other world.” Nightlight said, as he open the saddle in between the seat and the leather part to show the dresses and some melee weapons such as knifes and swords to Goldhearts.

“There is a small dress that is meant for the foal and remember to put on the size changing spell so that it will fit the wearer, so that no matter how big you or the foal will grow, it should fit. The dress is made of my scales and ..” before he could finish, Goldhearts went forward and wrapped her hooves around the tiny dragon in front of her and lifted him up as she stood back to her full height, tears rapidly dropping down her cheeks. “Thank you, Nightlight, thank you so much. You are the best rider and partner this Unicorn could have hoped for.”

Nightlight raised his claw and tried his best wrapped it around her neck, returning the hug while almost suffocating from the force that Goldheart’s hug. He patted Goldheart’s neck to gently remind her about the strength that she is using to hug him. Goldheart quickly released her grip on the dragon and placed him back down on the ground. Nightlight tries to reorient himself on the ground and coughed several times as he tries to regain his breath.

Goldhearts smiled as no matter what happens, Nightlight is always that small little boy that she carried around the battlefield. She then glanced down at the saddle and examined its contents. She has so many questions about how and where her partner got these items and she wanted to ask NIghtlight but sadly time is running out, the sun is starting to rise and that soon enemy forces would locate their locations.

She stuffed the items inside the saddle and placed it on her back. She will have to throughly examine the items inside when she is in Equestria. She looked down at her partner still trying to regain his breath and orientation.

Oops, maybe I hug him a little too tightly, Goldhearts thought to herself. Ngihtlight managed to regain his orientation and stare back at the mare and saw that she have picked up the saddle and that the sun was rising behind her. “Goldhearts, I guess this is goodbye?” He asked hesitantly.

Goldheart nodded, and leaned down and rubbed her head against her partner’s chest, just wanting to feel his physical body before she activated the spell. Nightlight placed his claws around her neck and both stayed in this position for awhile. After some time has passed both let go of each other. “It is time.” Nightlight stated coldly. Goldhearts nodded and lit up her horn to activate the spell. Once she was done, her horn glow and shot a beam in front of her, causing a purple portal to form in front of her. She turned around to look at her partner, wanting to say so much to the boy she loves so much but the only words that come out is “See you later, Nightlight.”

“See you later, Goldhearts.” Nightlight said as both waved their claws and hooves at each other. She turned around and faced the portal. It is now or never, Goldhearts thought and raised her hooves and walked towards the portal. As she walked towards the portal, her sharp ears heard the thick sound of boots approaching their location. She wanted to warn her partner but she could not do so, not when she is so close to her freedom and dashed straight for the portal. As she entered the portal, the last thing she heard from this world was “The horse is getting away!” “To get to her you will have to go through me first.” and the sound of gun fire lighting up the position.
