//------------------------------// // It's Sumo Time // Story: Pokémon Turquoise Johto Adventures // by foxmaster //------------------------------// As they continue on the road to Olivine City Turquoise and Fluttershy find themselves walking through an intriguing little village. “Where are we?” Fluttershy asked. “Just an intriguing little village,” Turquoise said before noticing two Pokemon going at each other with Physical strength alone. One was a Blastoise and the other was a big orange boar-like creature that looked like a wrestler. “What kind of pokemon is that? Turquoise pulled out her Pokedex for more info. “Emboar. The Mega Fire Pig Pokemon. It can throw a fire punch by setting its fists on fire with its fiery chin. It cares deeply about its friends,” The Pokedex said. Suddenly the Emboar shoved Blastoise out of the ring they were fighting in. “Blastoise is out of the ring which means victory goes to Emboar,” The ref said while pointing his strange-looking fan a muscular man with red hair who was wearing an orange shirt with matching shorts. “Nice work Emboar,” The man said which made Emboar smile. Suddenly the man noticed Turquoise and Fluttershy. “I see we have some newcomers. “I’m Turquoise,” Turquoise said. “And I’m Fluttershy,” Fluttershy said while hiding behind her hair timidly due to all the muscular people around her now. “Nice to meet you two, I’m Jaden and this is my partner Emboar,” Jaden said while also introducing Emboar. “That style of battle was impressive,” Turquoise said. “Thanks, we have been training for the Pokemon Sumo Conference for some time now,” Jaden said. “Sounds pretty cool,” Turquoise said. “Are you two interested in entering?” Jaden asked. “Can we?” Fluttershy asked. “Anyone can enter but there is a weight rule,” Jaden said. “Weight rule?” Turquoise asked. “In order for a pokemon to be qualified to enter, they must weigh at least 80 kilograms or 176.37 pounds to be precise,” Jaden clarified. “I think I might have someone back home,” Turquoise said before running to the Pokemon center to call Professor Oak. Fluttershy followed her and as soon as she caught up to her Turquoise was already on the phone. “Pokemon Sumo huh,” Professor Oak said. “Yes, but to enter I need to have a pokemon that weight at least 80 Kilograms,” Turquoise said. “In that case, your options are Venusaur, Flygon, Goodra, or Dragonite,” Professor Oak said. Turquoise gave it some thought. She considered how Venusaur was good at taking hits and enduring them but was not good at hitting back physically so that scratched him off. She considered how Flygon would do but then realized he was not that strong in close quarters. Next was Goodra who would most likely lose due to his own viscosity being used against him so that just left one option. “I will go with Dragonite,” Turquoise said. “Good choice especially since Dragonite is the heaviest out of the four of them,” Professor Oak said before getting Dragonite ready for transport. Luckily for Turquoise she only had five Pokemon on her so she was good to go on her end. Professor Oak placed Dragonite's Pokeball in the tray before activating the transporter. A bit later Dragonite was now on Turquoise’s end. “Dragonite arrived safely on my end,” Turquoise said before placing his Pokeball on her belt. “Best of luck with the competition,” Professor Oak said before hanging up. “I must ask but why didn't you decide to use Meganium?” Fluttershy asked. “Because she is more partial to contests so physical fighting is not her style,” Turquoise said. “Also have you ever competed in Sumo wrestling before?” Fluttershy asked hoping Turquoise thought this through. “No, but it's never too late to try new things,” Turquoise said. The girls returned to the spot where they met Jaden who was waiting for them. “I see you girls are back. Did you get the pokemon you needed?” Jaden asked. “I sure did,” Turquoise said. “Then let's see it,” Jaden said. “Go Dragonite,” Turquoise said as she called out Dragonite who looked very pleased to see Turquoise again as indicated by him smothering her. “A Dragonite, now that is a good pokemon to use,” Jaden said before Turquoise got back up. “Ok Dragonite let's begin training for the Sumo Conference,” Turquoise said with Dragonite looking confused. “Allow me to explain,” Jaden said before going into detail about the rules. “The goal is to push your opponent out of the ring using only your physical strength and natural abilities, Pokemon Moves are prohibited. Emboar demonstrated some fundamentals for Dragonite who learned them almost instantly. With the rules now covered it was time to head to the venue for registration. Each person entering was required to have their pokemon weighted in accordance with the weight rule. Some were denied due to their pokemon not meeting the weight requirement while others were approved including Turquoise and her Dragonite along with Fluttershy and her Ursaring. The sixteen competitors then entered the stadium for the opening ceremony. “Welcome everyone to the 55th annual Pokemon Sumo Conference, As always we have a heavy-weight roster of contenders ready for wrestling action but only one will walk away the winner,” The MC said before continuing. “Like always the winner will receive the coveted King’s Rock along with a one-year’s supply of Pokemon Food. Losing Pokemon will be eliminated and winners will advance until the last two remaining pokemon faces each other for the crown. Good luck to you all and may the best Pokemon win. “Looks like we got some stiff competition,” Turquoise said referring to all the heavy-weight pokemon in the stadium. “Of course, they were all bred specifically for Sumo Wrestling after all, but that one right there is the one to beat this year,” Jaden said while pointing to a Tyranitar. “The Tyranitar?” Turquoise asked before noticing how both Emboar and Tyranitar were looking at each other the way two rivals would. “I sure would hate to be caught between those two. “We are now ready for the first match to begin,” The Mc said before Fluttershy and her opponent took their positions along with their pokemon. A bit later the ref took his spot and started by introducing the competitors. “Fr-om the east, Ur-sa-ring, fr-om the west, Pan-go-ro,” The ref sang. Turquoise pulled out her Pokedex for Pangoro. “Pangoro, The Daunting Pokemon, Using its leaf, Pangoro can predict the moves of its opponents. It strikes with punches that can turn a dump truck into scrap with just one hit,” The Pokedex said. The match began and both bears were giving it their all. Pangoro was pushing Ursaring towards the edge of the ring and just when it looked like he was about to lose Ursaring flipped Pangoro out of the ring. “Pangoro is out of the ring Ursaring wins the match,” The ref said. The next match went by fast and then it was Jaden's turn. Both pokemon and trainers took their positions before the ref was ready. “Fr-om the east, E-Lec-Ti-Vire, Fr-om the west, Em-Boar. This match was more intense than the last with both sides not giving an inch. They both slapped each other hoping to knock each other off-balance and in the end, Emboar succeeded then delivered a powerful push that sent Electivire falling out of the ring. The ref called the match with Emboar being declared the winner. “That was impressive the way they tried to knock each other off-balance,” Turquoise said with joy in her voice. “Your next Turquoise,” Fluttershy said. “Right and we will win and move on to the next round,” Turquoise said. After the next match ended Turquoise took her position along with her Dragonite. The ref arrived and introduced the competitors for the final match of the first round. “Fr-om the east, Dra-Go-NIte, Fr-om the west, Blast-oise,” The Ref sang. After giving the go-ahead to start both Both Dragonite and Blastoise grappled each other while pushing. “You can do it Dragonite don’t give up,” Turquoise shouted. Dragonite then tried to copy the flip move Ursaring used and not only managed to send Blastoise out of the ring but a few feet further than when Ursaring did it. “Blastoise is out of the ring, Dragonite wins. “And with that, the first round is now over, we will have a 30-minute intermission before moving on to the Quarter Finals,” The MC said. The remaining eight competitors were in the back resting. “I must say Turquoise using Dragonite’s strength and Blastoise’s size difference was brilliant,” Jaden said. “Thanks although it was actually Dragonite that came up with that not me,” Turquoise said. “Either way I hope to face you in the finals,” Jaden said. As soon as the intermission was over it was time for the quarter-finals and the first one up was Fluttershy and her Ursaring. As soon as Fluttershy got a look at who she was up against she felt nervous. “Fr-om the east, Ur-Sa-Ring, Fr-om the west, Ty-Ran-I-Tar,” The Ref sang before declaring the match to start. Ursaring tried to push Tyranitar with all he had but it was not working since Tyranitar was not budging even an inch. Suddenly Tyranitar shoved Ursaring with a big push which sent him flying out of the ring. “Ursaring is out of the ring, Tyranitar wins. Fluttershy recalled Ursaring and returned to the back where Turquoise was waiting for her. Jaden walked into the stadium for the next match which was against a trainer with a Golem. “This is it Jaden win this and we face the current champ,” Jaden said in his mind to psych himself up. “Fr-om the east, Go-Lem, Fr-om the west, Em-Boar,” The Ref sang before declaring the match to start. Both Emboar and Golem were pushing against each other with all they had. Just when it looked like Golem was about to push Emboar out of the ring Emboar pushed back and managed to return to the center. “You know what to do Emboar,” Jaden said before Emboar pounded his fist on top of Golem which knocked it off balance before giving it a big shove that sent it rolling out of the ring. “I thought pokemon moves were off-limits so why did he use Hammer Arm?” Fluttershy asked. “Your wrong that wasn't Hammer Arm, that was just an ordinary attack with lots of muscle behind it,” Turquoise said before continuing her explanation. “If it was Hammer arm then we would be seeing the energy for it gathered in Emboar’s arm. The third match was impressive and took about two minutes before a winner was declared. It was now Turquoise’s turn and she and Dragonite were ready. “Fr-om the east, Bar-Bar-A-Cle, Fr-om the west, Dra-Go-Nite,” The ref sang before starting the match. Both Dragonite and Barbaracle were locked in combat but Barbaracle had an extra set of arms to push with which broke the lock. Dragonite used his tail to knock Barbaracle off balance before pushing it out of the ring. “Barbaracle is out of the ring, Dragonite wins. “And that concludes the quarter-finals we will have another thirty-minute intermission before we start the Semi-finals,” The Mc said. As soon as Turquoise returned to the back area Jaden was waiting for her. “You and Dragonite are improving quite nicely,” Jaden said. “Thanks,” Turquoise said. “Good luck in your next match,” Jaden said. The next match was Emboar against Tyranitar and Jaden was excited for this one since he and his partner trained for it for weeks. As soon as both sides took their positions the ref took his and began his introduction. “Fr-om the east, Ty-Ran-I-Tar, Fr-om the west, Em-Boar,” The Ref sang before declaring the match to start. Tyranitar made the first move by trying to push Emboar out of the ring with sheer force only for Emboar to barely budge. “Nice try but we been studying your matches and we built up our endurance and strength so we could hold our ground,” Jaden said before having Emboar push back. Despite how strong Tynaitar’s defenses were Emboar was pushing it back thrust by thrust until they were at the edge of the ring. Tyranitar pushed back which sent Embaor a couple of inches back which put him in prime position for a finisher. Emboar put all of its strength into one final push which caused Tyranitar’s foot to slide out of the ring. “Tyranitar is out of the ring, Emboar wins,” The Ref said. “You did it Emboar, you beat the champion,” Jaden said with joy. It was now Turquoise turn and as soon as she took her position she noticed her opponent had a pokemon that looked like an actual sumo wrestler and pulled out her Pokedex for more info. “Hariyama, The Arm Thrust Pokemon, It loves to match power with big-bodied Pokémon. It can send a truck flying with its arm thrusts,” The Pokedex said which made Turquoise slightly nervous since Hariyama was the perfect pokemon for an event like this. The Ref took his position and did his introduction. “Fr-om the east, Har-I-Ya-Ma, Fr-om the west, Dra-Go-Nite,” The Ref sang before declaring the match to start. Hariyama true to its name began by trying to break Dragonite’s stance with a flurry of arm thrusts while Dragonite kept his guard up. Dragonite then spun around and knocked Hariyama off balance with his tail before delivering a powerful push that sent Hariyama sliding close to the edge of the ring before getting back up which shook the ground but not Dragonite. Hariyama rushed at Dragonite only for Dragonite to step out of the way then swing his tail to knock Hariyama out of the ring. “Hariyama is out of the ring, Dragonite wins. As soon as the match was over Turquoise returned to the back to rest up for the final match. Jaden approached her to congratulate her on making it to the final match. “Let’s give it our all,” Jaden said. “You know we will,” Turquoise said. With the break now over it was time for the final match. As soon as Turquoise and Jaden took their positions the ref took his. “Fr-om the east, Dra-Go-Nite, Fr-om the west, Em-Boar,” The ref sang before declaring the match to start. Both Dragonite and Emboar went all out as they pushed each other. The match was like a seesaw of power as both sides push each other to the edge of the ring and then back again. Dragonite tried using his tail but Emboar saw right through that then grabbed it. “We know about that move and how when you use it you leave yourself open, Emboar spin Dragonite around and then throw him out of the ring,” Jaden said as Emboar spun Dragonite like he was doing the hammer throw in the Olympics. Before Emboar could release Dragonite he put all of his strength into flipping Emboar before pushing him towards the edge of the ring where his foot slid out of the ring. “Emboar is out of the ring, Dragonite wins,” The Ref said. “And there you have it ladies and gentlemen the winner of this year’s Sumo Conference is Turquoise and her Dragonite. Turquoise approached the front and accepted her King’s rock and year’s supply of Pokemon Food. After that, the girls returned to the pokemon center where Turquoise sent Dragonite back to professor oak’s lab and also call it a night. The next day Turquoise and Fluttershy were on their way out of the village until Jaden showed up to see them off. “Good luck on the rest of your journey Turquoise and Fluttershy,” Jaden shouted as they were moving further and further to the village limits. Where will our heroes be going next? Find out next time as the journey continues. To be continued
