Like a phoenix burning bright in the sky
part 1
It's here! It's finally here! After what seemed like forever, after weeks of preparation and editing their decks, at long last, Friday had finally arrived. And not like preparing for the weekend, today marks the day for the Canterlot Cup. The time for the Canterlot High’s annual Duel Monster tournament has finally come! All the spectators had taken their seats in the arena where the tournament would be held. The students from their respective schools were seated in one general area. Celestia, Luna, Cinch as well as the other school heads were seated in a special box that overlooked the entire arena. A group of crane arms, each with a cameraman and another crewman, were positioned around the platform in the middle, so that they would be able to cover every angle there was.
In the center of the platform was the commentator, a woman with curly brown hair, blue eyes, a beauty Mark on her cheek, and dressed in pink dress with white gloves and red heels.
"That's it everyone, lots of energy. Remember, the whole world's watching you live! Now let's cheer these duelists on!" The commentator said, and the crowd continued to cheer.
"Attention students! Let’s all give a warm, comfortable welcome to the man, the myth, the legend. The creator of Duel Monsters himself, Maximillion Pegasus!” The commentator announced. And sure enough, the eccentric but beloved man known as Pegasus made his way into the center of the arena, the audience going absolutely ballistic all the while.
“Greetings one and all, it’s so wonderful to be here in beautiful Canterlot city.” Pegasus said before accepting the microphone from the commentator. “To start off, I must say I am delighted to be attending this year’s Canterlot Cup. And I would love to thank Princpal Celestia and Vice-Principal Luna from Canterlot high, Principal Cinch from Crystal Prep, and all the other schools heads for honoring yours truly with an invitation to this most auspicious occasion.” As Pegasus continued his speech, the representatives of each school sat on the edge of their seats in eager anticipation.
“Now, this is the first time such an event held here will be broadcasted on to millions of screens world-wide, a perfect way to show everyone the potential of the students that attend Canterlot schools. As far as the rules go, each contestant well be picked at random. Once your name is called, you are to approach to the arena and present your tournament entry cards. If you fail to do so for whatever reason, or if you fail to present your tournament entry card, you will be disqualified. No ifs, ands, or buts.”
“Man. This is so exciting.” Rainbow Dash whispered to her friends with glee.
“Pfft, butts.” Pinkie snickered, only to be elbowed by Applejack.
“Next, no foul play, I expect a good clean duel from each one of our participants. To inform you how to break a tie, if both sides are on even grounds, a duelist from both sides will be selected. And the duelist that becomes the tie-breaker wins. The school with the most wins will receive a grand prize. And what is it, you may be asking? Well, a tour my company, Industrial Illusions, of course. And to make it extra special, the winning team will also get the opportunity to design their own one-of-a-kind duel monsters cards to keep, free of charge.” As Pegasus said that the audience went absolutely crazy again.
“Hmph. And I intend to get us that prize.” Haze said with a wicked smirk.
“With rare one-of-a-kind cards of our own design at our disposal, nobody will stand in our way.” Nightingale said with a chuckle.
“And you folks can get a share of the prize yourselves.” Quicksilver said to the other representatives, namely the transfers.
“No need.” Yurika said with a wave of her hand. “I think our decks are fine as they are.”
“If you say so”, Quicksilver said with a nod before turning his attention back to the arena.
“Now then, with all of that out of the way, let the tournament begin!” Pegasus said before handing the microphone back to the commentator and walking off the arena, making the crowd roar in applause once again.
"Alright, Let’s see which lucky schools gets to kick off this tournament.” The commentator announced." At one end of the Arena, the jumbotron showed a picture of a crescent moon with a raven perched on it.
Nightingale walked out of the entrance in slow motion as a series of explosions occurred on the entrance sides before a pair of holographic ravens flew around her. The Crystal Prepped cheered her on, mostly the male student.
"Introducing our first representative of Crystal Prep, Nightingale!" announced the commentator as Nightingale winked at a few of the male audience, making them go crazy.
The song died down as Nightingale awaited her opponent. On the opposite side of the arena, the Titantron there, showed a phoenix with a sun behind it.
Sunset came out of the other entrance on the opposite side and the Canterlot High students cheered as she made her way to the platform while waving at the audience.
“You get her, Sunset!” Rainbow cheered for her friend.
“Kick her butt!” Spike cheered with the others.
"And her opponent… representing Canterlot High, Sunset Shimmer!" the Commentator announced before walking to the spectator desk. "Alright ladies, have you you're entry cards?"
After both duelists showed their tournament entry cards, the first match was set to begin.
"Well, I was hoping to face Dustin, but I guess you’ll have to do." Nightingale said with a smirk.
“Ready to get you butt kicked?” Sunset growled furiously to Nightingale, who just chuckled.
A massive holographic screen then appeared, showing both Sunset and Nightingale’s life point gauges.
“Duelists, shuffle your decks!” The screen said in a booming robotic voice. Both duelists did so, and once their decks were good and shuffled, they placed their decks in their respective slots.
“Selecting first turn player!” The screen announced before showing the image coin. “Heads or tails?”
“Heads.” Nightingale declared.
“Tails.” Sunset said with a determined look.
The coin on screen then tossed before landing on tails.
“Sunset Shimmer takes first turn!” The screen announced, and Sunset and Nightingale drew their hands. “Begin!”
“Let’s Duel!” Both Sunset and Nightingale announced, and the duel has begun,

“Alright. Here goes.” Sunset said, drawing her sixth card before examining her hand, formulating a strategy in her mind. “First, I’ll play Terraforming, allowing me to add 1 Field Spell from my Deck straight to my hand.” Sunset then pulled out her deck, unfurling it to search for the right card until she finally spotted it. “And while I’m at it, I’ll put it to use! So let’s dial up the heat with the field spell, Fire King Island!”
After placing the card in the Field Zone slot of her duel disk, the entire arena began to change. The whole field changed into a tropical island, complete with a massive volcano behind Sunset. Nightingale didn’t seem too concerned by this.
“Man! Talk about bringing in the heat!” Dustin said with an impressed smirk.
“And next, I’ll use its first effect. Allowing me to destroy 1 monster from my hand or field to add 1 "Fire King" monster from my deck to my hand." Sunset said as she sent 1 card from her hand to her her grabeyard before adding 1 card to replace the discarded card. "Next, I'll this little cutie, Firebird!” Sunset said as an eagle-sized red bird with flaming wings and two long tail feathers appeared. The bird flapped its wings, causing embers to fly while emitting a shriek of pride.

“Big deal, bacon-head. Is that little pigeon supposed to scare me?” Nightingale said with a smirk.
“No. But this might.” Sunset declared, making Nightingale confused a bit. “Next I play Cost Down! By discarding 1 card, all monsters in my hand have their levels reduced by two until the end of this turn, even after hit the field.” Sunset sent a card from her hand to the graveyard slot of her duel disk. “And that comes in real handy, when I have this! I summon the Tuner Monster, Flamvell Magician!”

Suddenly, a purple-skinned man with red hair in a ponytail, a red beard, dressed in a black sorcerer’s uniform and holding a fiery scepter appeared.
“A Tuner?” Quicksilver asked in shock. “Looks like someone’s not pulling any punches.”
“Now, I tune my Level two Flamvell Magician with my Level four Firebird” Sunset Shimmer declared as Flamvell Sorcerer vanished, causing two green rings to appear before flying towards Firebird, encasing the flaming bird. “By aligning the blazing power of my fiery sorcerer and my burning bird, I invoke the flaming steed of the burning arts!” A Sunset Shimmer chanted, Firebird was encased in a column of intense blue fire, making her friends look in amazement while Nightingale and the other representatives for Crystal Prep watched in shock. “Synchro Summon! Ride onward into battle, Level 6, Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Horse Prince!”

“Unbelievable, it’s only the first turn and miss Shimmer has already synchro summoned a powerful monster!” The commentator said through the mic.
“Oh, if you think he’s scary now, just wait until you see his special ability!” Sunset said with a smirk.
Nightingale glared in anticipation.
“Looks like Nightingale’s up for a real fight!” Haze said, observing the duel with undivided attention.
“Since he’s Synchro Summoned, I can Special Summon 1 Level 3 fire-attribute monster from my Deck, but I can’t Special Summon any Level 5 or higher monster for the rest of the turn.” Sunset said as she picked the card she needed card from her deck. “So, let’s welcome my four-legged friend, Fire King Avatar Kirin, in Defense Mode!” As Sunset said this, a white unicorn with a fiery green mane and tail and clad in eastern horse armor appeared, neighing in might.
“Woohoo!” Pinkie cheered in excitement! “Way to go, Sunset!”
“Yay.” Fluttershy cheered in, albeit in her usual quiet tone.
“I’ll finish it from there. You’re move, Nightingale.” Sunset said, making Nightingale nod before drawing. When she saw what she drew, she had a wicked smile on her face.
“Uh oh. I know that look.” Dustin said with a hint of worry in his voice.
“What do you mean?” Spike asked Dustin, feeling worried as well.
“You’re about to find out, right now.” Dustin said with a shiver.
“For my first move, I’ll also play a Tuner. And this one is a handy one. Go, Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind, in attack mode!” Nightingale declared as a humanoid bird with black feathers, a ruffle of white feathers on its neck, and spiked green hair with a pair of green wings from the sides of it head flew onto the field. It had a yellow head, but it only had a pair of big eyes and no beak.

“Uh oh.” Sunset said with a look of shock.
“Blackwings!” Twilight said with a mix of both shock and worry. “This may not be good!”
“Next, I play Pot of Greed” Nightingale declared, making Sunset gasp. “Allowing me to draw two more cards!” Nightingale then drew her new cards before adding them to her hand. “And sine I have Gale on the field, I can Special Summon this little birdie out. Blackwing – Bora the Spear in attack mode!”
A large humanoid bird wielding a drill-like lance appeared, cawing as it eyes Sunset’s field with malice.

“Now, my Level 3 Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind tunes with my Level 4 Blackwing – Bora the Spear!” Nightingale called out as Gale vanished, creating three golden rings that enveloped Bora, causing a massive tornado to appear. The tornado created winds with such intensity that Sunset had o shield herself. “By aligning the power of my little flier and my sky high lancer, I call upon the flying swordsman with the might of a heavy rainstorm!” Nightingale chanted at a massive storm cloud appeared in the sky, thunder roared, lightning cracked, and the winds picked up speed. Suddenly, a pair of wings emerged from the twister. “Synchro Summon! Take to the skies, Level 7, Assault Blackwing – Raikiri the Rain Shower”
Suddenly, the tornado vanished, revealing a new monster. It resembled a cross between a man and a raven, covered in bits of purple armor, a headpiece shaped like the head of a bird, a pair of bird feet, feathered wings sprouting from his back, and a tunic covering his lower half. He drew his sword and released a war cry that sounded like a man yelling mixed with a raven’s caw.

“My, oh my!” The commentator spoke out in awe. “Looks like feathers are about to fly, folks!”
“Correct you are, sister.” Nightingale said to the commentator before looking back to Sunset. “Because now I activate Raikiri’s special ability! Once per turn, I can target cards you control up to the number of Blackwing monsters I control and destroy them. Since I only have Raikiri, that means I can destroy 1 card. So I say it’s high time we head that Kirin off at the pass!” Nightingale chuckled as Rikiri drew his sword.
“Oh, I can’t watch!” Pinkie said before covering her eyes as Raikiri raised his sword, causing it to glow a purple glow before swinging it, sending a crescent of purple energy at Kirin, causing it to neigh before shattering to bits.
“By destroying Kirin, you triggered his special ability, allowing me to send 1 Fire monster from my deck straight to the graveyard.” Sunset said as she did just as her Kirin’s ability stated.
“So what, it’s not going to save your horse prince! Raiki, put that pony out to pasture, with Cyclone Blade Slash!” Nightingale declared, and Raikiri followed his masters command by swinging his sword, sending a barrage of purple energy crescents at Sunsets monster, shattering it to pieces.
Sunset LP – 7600
“I’ll finish up by placing 1 card face-down.” Nightingale said before placing her face down card. “So, am I ruffling your feathers yet?”
Suddenly, a massive flame appeared behind Sunset while she had a smug grin on her face, catching Nightingale off guard.
“Oh please! I’m just getting warmed up!” Sunset drew her card next card, and had a smile upon seeing what she drew. “First, I activate the effect of a monster in my graveyard, allowing me to Special Summon Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys to the field!” As Sunset said this, a massive golden bird with fiery wings emerged from the raging flame, releasing a mighty shriek.

“No way!” Erena uttered in bewilderment.
“Aw yeah!” Rainbow cheered with excitement. “Show her whose boss, Sunset!”
“Are you freaking kidding!?” Nightingale asked in shock upon seeing the fiery bird before her.
“And since she was summoned this way, her second effect activate! Which destroys all Spells and Traps currently on the field! So, your plans to use your facedown card are up in smoke.” Sunset said as Nephthys flapped her wings, causing a huge wave of flames to destroy Nightingale’s facedown card, as well as causing Sunset’s field Spell to catch fire.
“You do realize that her effect also destroys your Field Spell too right?” And you should know that when Fire King Island gets destroyed, not only does it get roasted,” Nightingale said with a triumphant smirk as the island was engulfed in fire, taking Nephthys with her, “but all monsters you control do too, including your oversized pheasant!”
Soon, the flames died out, revealing the arena back to its original state.
“Oh man.” Spike said with worry again.
“And you said my plans were up in smoke.” Nightingale said with a smirk, but Sunset had a grin on her face.
“Don’t be so sure! She’ll be back! And with her gone, I can play this!” Sunset said, revealing the card she drew earlier. “The Spell Onslaught of the Fire Kings!”
“Christ!” Nightingale swore under her breath!
“Since you control a monster while I have none, this card allows me to summon 1 fire-attribute winged beast from my deck straight to the field.” Sunset said as she picked the card she needed from her deck. “And I know just the one! Go, Fire King High Avatar Garunix, I n attack mode!”
A massive column of fire appeared behind sunset, and from it emerged a massive red bird covered in golden armor! The giant bird took to the skies, releasing a mighty war cry!

“Aw man!” Quicksilver said with shock. “So not cool!”
“And I think it’s only going to get much worse!” Haze said, just as shocked as his friend.
Up on the onlooker box, Cinch was shocked upon seeing the events unfold.
“This I was not expecting!” Cinch stated in total shock.
“You’d be amazed how talented mine and Luna’s students are, Cinch.” Celestia said with a smug grin to Cinch.
“Garunix! Turn that oversized crow into fried chicken wings!” Sunset declared as Garunix took to the sky. “WILDFIRE TSUNAMI!” And with that, Garunix burst into flames and flew towards Raikiri with its talons outstretched. Upon making contact the birdman screamed in pain before disintegrating into ashes.

“I end my turn. And since I summoned Garunix with Onslaught of the Fire Kings, Garunix is destroyed” Sunset said as her fiery avian in a brilliant corona of flames.
Suddenly, Nightingale chuckled before laughing, confusing Sunset and her friends.
“Don’t think you’ve gotten the upper hand, hot head!” Nightingale said as she drew her next card. "Now, of course when my turn starts and when I draw, that fiery pigeon automatically returns to your field."
"Correct you are. But not only does Garunix come back, but so does Nepthys." Sunset said as both Garunix and Nepthys reappeared back to Sunset's field, releasing its mighty cry.
“I may no longer have Raikiri, but I do have another monster ready, willing, and able to blow you away!” Nightingale looks to the Canterlot side of the bleachers. “And I bet it’s something you’re quite familiar with, Hogan.”
Dustin’s eyes went wide in shock upon hearing that. “No! She’s not referring to…” Dustin shivered in fear, knowing what Nightingale was up to.
“Onii-chan?” Emille asked her brother in worry.
“What are you yapping about?” Sunset asked in confusion.
“You’re about to find out, right now!” Nightingale said, drawing a card from her Extra Deck. “I banish Raikiri, Gale, and Bora from my graveyard to perform a Necron Summon!”
Now it was Sunset’s turn to go wide-eyed in total shock.
“By offering the essence of my Assault Blackwing – Raikiri the Rain Shower, Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind, and Blackwing – Bora the Spear, the gateway to the other side is now opened!!” Nightingale chanted as the transparent of all three monsters appeared as transparent silhouettes before taking off into the sky, causing a massive hurricane to form. The winds picked up with great force, lightning flashed and thunder roared.
“Ah, feel that breeze!” Pinkie said in her usual goofy way, enjoying the wind while the others shielded themselves.
Suddenly, from the eye of the hurricane, a massive pillar of pale green energy shot down to Nightingale’s side of the field.
“From the eye of a wild hurricane, I invoke the mighty king of the wind, the monarch of the raging storms! Mighty beast of the leaden sky, descend and make your presence known!” Nightingale continued to chant as a pair of massive, feathered wings emerged from the column, a pair of piercing violet eyes shone through, staring at Sunset.
“Wha-what the…” Sunset stammered, shaking in her boots.
“Necron Summon! Bring on the storm, Mark 10, Necrogale, King of the Plague Storm!” Nightingale finished, and the hurricane soon vanished, revealing a massive creature that resembled an unholy union between a raven and a dragon. The beast then let out a cry that sounded like the caw of a monstrous raven.

“Oh god no!” Dustin said with fear clear in his voice.
“Let’s see how long Sunset’s fire stays lit after this.” Haze said with a chuckle.
“What is that!?” Sunset asked, a cold shiver running down her spine.
“This, dearie, is my ace card.” Nightingale said as the Necrogale lowered his head to her master, earning a few head rubs from Nightingale, making the bird coo in delight. “Consider yourself lucky to come face to face with my little pet. There's only one other person to witness Necrogale's glory. Isn’t that right, my little sweetie tweetie?”
“Wait! You mean Dustin?” Sunset asked, looking to Dustin in the bleachers. Her question was answered instantly as she saw the look of fear on his face.
“Bingo. Each time he faced Necrogale, the poor sap lost. Didn’t he, momma’s wittle birdie?” Nightingale asked her monster, making it caw in response.
“Yeesh!” Rainbow said with disgust. “If she gives that ugly buzzard any more baby talk, I’m gonna be sick!”
“Next, I play the card I just drew, which is another Pot of Greed! Allowing me to draw two more cards!” Nightingale said before doing just that. “And if you think Necrogale is all you’ve got to worry about,” Nightingale then picked the next card in her hand, “then think again! For now I summon Blackwing – Auster the South Wind in Defense Mode!”
Suddenly, a yellow child-sized bird with a tuft of feathers on its head and multi-colored wings appeared, chirping like a canary.

“And while I’m at It, how about make use of its effect, allowing me to Special Summon 1 of my banished Blackwing monsters in Defense Mode?” Nightingale asked, making Sunset gasp in shock. “And I choose one of the monsters I banished for Necrogale’s Necron Summon! So come on back, Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind!”
Suddenly, from a small vortex, Gale was brought back to the field.
“And next, from my hand, I Special Summon Blackwing – Kris the Crack of Dawn!”
Another monster appeared, but this one resembled a humanoid raven wielding a sword and wearing Thai attire.

“Man!” Sunset said with shock still visible on her face, starting to sweat from nervousness. “This is so not good!”
“Oh, trust me! It’s only going to get worse!” Nightingale said with a chuckle. “Next I play the Spell Card Star Blast! Now by paying any multiple of 500 life points, the level of 1 monster I choose has its level reduced by 1 for each 500 life points paid. And I’ll pay up 1500 life points to reduce Auster’s level by three!”
Nightingale LP - 6200
Auster chirped as it was encased in a purple aura.
“Now, I Tune my Level 3 Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind with my Level 4 Blacking – Kris the Crack of Dawn!” Nightingale declared as Gale vanished, exploding into three green rings that enveloped Kris. Then Kris was enveloped in a massive tornado, creating another strong gust of wind. “By aligning the might of my little flier and my winged assailant, I created the dragon of phenomenal speed, the beast of velocity, the king of the Synchro Dimension!” As Nightingale chanted, the winds grew in intensity as the tornado grew in size. “Synchro Summon! Fly high, Level 7, Clear Wing Synchro Dragon!”
The tornado then vanished, revealing a massive dragon with a mix of white, black and cyan. From its body were multiple translucent turquoise wings. The beast roared out to signal its arrival.

“Oh crap!” Sunset said in absolute shock and terror at this point.
“Amazing, people!” The commentator announced. “Looks like we have a Dimension Dragon gracing us in this duel!”
“Oh, but I’m not done just yet.” Nightingale said, making Sunset gasp out.
“Oh dear!” Celestia uttered in worry for her daughter.
“Now, I tune my Level 1 Blackwing – Auster the South Wind with my Level 7 Clear Wing Synchro Dragon, in order to unleash its true potential!” Nightingale declared as Auster vanished, launching a single green ring to Clear Wing Synchro Dragon.
“No way!” Rainbow exclaimed in horror!
“Is she?” Twilight asked, just as flabbergasted as the others.
“She is!” Erena exclaimed, fearing the worst for her friend as Clear Wing Synchro Dragon was encased in a massive twister. The winds from the tornado were stronger than the last one, and much colder as evidenced as the crystal spikes that surrounded the twister.
“By aligning the energy of my southern bird with my synchro dragon, I invoke the might of the glistening beast from the Synchro Dimension, who travels with the speed to break holes in reality itself! Synchro Summon! Soar with pride, level 8, Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon!” Nightingale chanted as the tornado finally dissipated, revealing the new dragon.

“Oh! My! God!” Sunset uttered, too shocked to move a single muscle.
“My, oh my! What a beauty!" The commentator said to the crowd, admiring the dragon’s appearance. “Talk about “dazzling” am I right?”
“It seems the crowd can agree.” Nightingale said as the entire crowd were amazed by seeing such a monster on the field. Well, at least everyone that represented Crystal Prep, anyways. The people who represented Canterlot High, however, they were shocked, and a bit worried for Sunset, especially her friends.
“Oh dear.” Vice-Principal Luna uttered in shock.
“It appears this match will be ours.” Cinch declared with a smug grin.
“Now my Dragon! Pluck that Garunix's feathers!” Nightingale declared as Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon flew high into the atmosphere with the speed of a jet airplane. “DIMENSIONAL SONIC BOOM!”
And with that, the crystalline dragon dashed towards Garunix with astronomical speed. Once the attack hit, this caused the ground to shake as Garunix was encased in crystals before shattering.

“And I should mention that whenever my dragon attacks a monster whose Level is 5 or higher, he gains attack points equal to the current attack points that monster had during damage calculation.” Nightingale said with a laugh as Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon was enveloped in a white aura, releasing a mighty roar as its power increased.
“Shit!” Dustin sword out of shock.
“5700 attack points!?” Pinkie gasped in total horror.
“And with that out of the way, Necrogale, your turn!” Nightingale declare, causing Necrogale to take flight. “Destroy Sacred Phoenix of Nepthys! VENDETTA CYCLONE!” Necrogale then opened its maw, firing a tornado at Sunset, making her groan while her life points lowered.

“Sunset!” Twilight called out to her friend out of worry.
“Looks like Nightingale has gained the upper hand, yet again.” Haze said with a wicked chuckle.
“And I’ll just end it there.” Nightingale said, enjoying the look of fear on Sunset Shimmer’s face
‘Dammit! What am I going to do here? I wasn’t prepared for this!’ Sunset thought to herself out of fear, but she took some deep breaths and steeled herself. ‘Well, giving up is not an option! Not when my entire team is counting on me!’
“If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed, feel free to forfeit at anytime.” Nightingale said to Sunset with a wicked grin.
“Like Hell I will!” Sunset growled. “I’m not going down without a fight!” Sunset then drew her next card, but what a bit nervous to see what it was. 'This next card might be my last. Regardless, I better make it count.' She then mustered up the courage to see what she drew.
