Chapter 4

Golden Oaks Library... Ponyville... Equestria... June 4th... 10:00 AM...

Twilight was sitting at the table trying to read the book that was in front of her. But every time she tried to get some reading done, her mind wondered towards Moonlight, who was reading some stories that ponies around her age would read. Twilight still couldn't get the thought of what happened the previous night out of her head.

Moonlight had been squirming in her sleep. She had to calm the little filly down, telling her that it was going to be okay. But when she succeeded on calming her down, Moonlight said one thing in her sleep. Momma. Twilight felt bad for Moonlight. Moonlight was technically an orphan, even before she arrived in Equestria.

Twilight sighed and then decided to go upstairs, but not without telling Moonlight, "I'll be upstairs if you need anything." Moonlight nodded and then Twilight headed upstairs. Twilight went into her room where Spike was reading some comic books he had gotten before the two of them moved into the library. Spike looked over towards Twilight.

"Twilight?" Spike asked. "What's wrong? You look really concerned about something."

"Spike, I'm starting to feel bad for Moonlight," Twilight said, pacing.

"Why?" Spike asked. "Is something wrong?"

"Before Moonlight came here to Equestria, she had a tough life as a human boy named Nick," Twilight explained. "When Nick was four, he lost his parents and was sent to an orphanage. And he was bullied in school. Then there was the kidnapped thing."

"You're right," Spike said, thinking about it. "Poor kid. If only there was something more we could do for him.. er... her. Oh, boy. This is going to get confusing. She's basically trapped as a filly version of Nightmare Moon for the rest of her life."

"Or longer," Twilight said. "She's an alicorn, just like the princesses, Celestia and Luna, and they've lived for over a thousand years."

"Oh, right," Spike said. "Why are you concerned for her? She wasn't originally from this world, but there is no way of changing her back to her original form."

"Moonlight should've been with a family a long time ago," Twilight said. "I just hope that Moonlight will adjust well. She basically can't go back to her original form." She then sighed.

"What are you gonna do?" Spike asked.

"I don't know, Spike," Twilight said. "But Moonlight needs somepony to watch over her. She needs somepony to love her. Take care of her. But nopony besides us will see her for who she is on the inside."

"Twilight, you're not thinking what I think you're thinking, are you?" Spike asked.

Twilight sighed and said, "I'm going to need some time to think about it," Twilight said. "And I might need some help from ponies before I make a decision." She then headed back downstairs to see Moonlight looking out of the window. Twilight smiled at that and decided to walk over to her.

Moonlight saw Twilight coming over to her. She got down from where she was looking out the window, and walked up to Twilight, the two meeting in the middle.

"Feeling trapped in here, aren't you?" Twilight asked.

Moonlight nodded and said, "I am. But, at least it's not with Miss Sheer. She treated me like a slave than a kid."

Twilight pulled Moonlight in for a hug and said, "I promise that will never happen again." Moonlight embraced the hug, wrapping her forelegs around Twilight's chest.

"Dear Princess Celestia...

For the past few days, things have been going fine with Moonlight. Of course, there are some ponies here in Ponyville that refuse to accept Moonlight as a filly, and they only see her as the mare your sister became. And all things considerate, Moonlight has been a wonderful guest, even if she is still considered an orphan from another world.

I was considering making her a part of my family, but before I make this decision, I'm gonna need to have a talk with my family, seeing what they think before I make this decision. But, I'm afraid that if I bring her to the train station, the ponies on the train might think she's going to attack Canterlot, so I'm going to need some help to get me, Spike and Moonlight to Canterlot.

Sign, your faithful student...
Twilight Sparkle."

Twilight had woken up early and started writing a letter to the princess. She decided to let Moonlight sleep in her bed. Moonlight was having another nightmare as she slept. She said she's been having nightmares ever since she, as Nick, was kidnapped. But every time Twilight calmed Moonlight down as she slept, the filly had stopped having the nightmares. The filly stayed close to Twilight through the remainder of the nights, and Twilight was getting the feeling that Moonlight was starting to see Twilight more than just a caretaker.

Twilight headed downstairs, quietly, so not to wake up Spike or Moonlight, and she took the letter she was writing with her. She headed down to the kitchen, and sat at the kitchen table. Twilight sighed and looked out the window. A few moments later, Spike came into the kitchen, rubbing his right eye with his hand.

"Twilight?" Spike asked, tiredly. He then yawned. "Is something bothering you?"

"Actually, Spike, there is," Twilight said. "How would you feel... if we had added Moonlight... as part of the family?"

Spike looked away, crossed his arms and said, "Well, she hasn't done anything but read and hang out with Applejack's little sister. She hasn't hurt anypony. But, why do you ask?"

"I'm thinking of adopting her," Twilight said. "But, I need a little more support on this before I make this decision."

"Are you sure about that, Twi?" Spike asked.

"Moonlight needs a loving family," Twilight said. "We should be able to give her the family she deserves."

Spike looked away for a bit, thinking about something, and then he asked, "This wouldn't happen to be the fact that she called you 'Momma' in her sleep, does it?"

Twilight nodded and said, "A foal needs a loving mother." She then levitated the letter she had written earlier and gave it to Spike. "Send this letter to the princess. And then later, we'll head on up to Canterlot."

"Sure," Spike said before blowing his emerald flames on the letter, sending it to Princess Celestia. Then he reached for something, even though he wasn't wearing anything. "I'm surprised you want to head to Canterlot so long before the Grand Galloping Gala." Spike held out his ticket to the Grand Galloping Gala.

"I know, Spike," Twilight said. "But things like this are a lot more important than the Grand Galloping Gala."

"Well, we'll just have to..." Spike said, before he held his gut, and then let out a belch, with emerald flames transforming into a scroll, then landing in his claws. "I was going to say wait until we get a response from the princess."

Twilight shook her head and said, "Open it and read it."

Spike unrolled the scroll and read it out loud:

"Dear Twilight...

I'll be sure to make sure that the ponies of Equestria will know about Moonlight for who she is, and how she ended up like my sister's darker side. I am also glad that you want to introduce Moonlight to your family, and get them to know her as well. And I am very proud that you want to take the initiative to take full responsibility of Moonlight. Of course, you would have to let your family know and make sure they will be okay with Moonlight being a part of the family. You have come a long way from the pony you were before I sent you to Ponyville, and I am proud of you for that. And if your family is okay with the decision, feel free to fill out the adoption form. Also, I will send down some royal chariots to come pick up you, Spike and Moonlight up, along with your friends, by 10:00 AM.

Signed, your beloved mentor...
Princess Celestia."

Spike belched again, and another scroll materialized out of his emerald flames. Spike unrolled it and read it.

"Wow," Spike said. "This is the adoption form for the adoption of Moonlight."

"Good, good," Twilight said. "We'll just wait until 8:00, and we'll go get the girls. Maybe bring Apple Bloom as well. Might as well bring Moonlight's first friend with us to make things easier for her."

"Good thinking, Twilight," Spike said. "To make things more comfortable for Moonlight if she had a friend with her."

Twilight nodded, but then something caught her ears from above. Twilight sighed and said, "Moonlight must be having another nightmare. I better go comfort her. We really need to find a way to get her to have peaceful dreams."

"I hope that Moonlight will stop when you make it official and adopt her," Spike said.

Twilight nodded, and headed upstairs. She went back into the bedroom, and headed towards the bed, and saw Moonlight struggling in her sleep.

Twilight went back onto the bed and pulled Moonlight into a hug. Twilight soothed her and said, "Everything's going to be okay, Moonlight. I'll make sure of it." Moonlight snuggled closer to Twilight, and started to calm down. Twilight then started humming a soothing tune to make Moonlight have more of a peaceful dream. Twilight then looked out the window to see the sun beginning to rise. This was going to be an interesting day.
