The Little Pegasus that Could

by CosmicAfro

I think she can.

Once upon a time, there was a group of three young but playful ponies in the wide wide world of Equestria. They lived in a magical town called Ponyville.

Apple Bloom was an Earth Pony who was starting to learn how to farm the land with the help of her older sister, Applejack. This made her stronger than most ponies, but not as tough as her older sister.

Sweetie Belle was a unicorn who was just learning her magic to help her older sister in the fashion world.

Scootaloo was a pegasus who was learning how to fly all by herself. Not because she didn’t want the help, but she was a stubborn young thing who was convinced she could do it all on her own.

Together, they were the best of friends and played all day together and sometimes they’d even have fun at night. Nothing could ruin their fun.

One day, the three fillies were out in an open field next to the Sweet Apple Acres flying their kites. It was a warm, sunny, and most importantly, windy day. It was just right.

“I bet I can get mine higher than yours,” said Apple Bloom with a playful grin.

“I bet you can’t!” replied Sweetie Belle.

“I bet I can get mine higher than both of yours!” said Scootaloo.

Together, the three ponies let their kites go higher, and higher, and higher, and higher, until they almost couldn’t see their kites! They were so high!

“They look about the same height,” said Apple Bloom while squinting her eyes.

Both of Apple Bloom’s friends nodded their heads. But then, Scootaloo said, “I bet I can make my kite do a cool trick!” She tugged on her string to the left and the kite went left. She tugged on her string to the right and the kite went right. Then, she started to pull it one way, then another, to make her kite go in circles!

“Whoa!” shouted both of Scootaloo’s friends with glee. “Can we try?” they both asked.

“Sure!” she said gleefully. Both of her friends began tugging their strings, but none could do it quite as well like Scootaloo could. Apple Bloom’s kite would only go side to side. Sweetie belle’s kite would only lean in one direction but not go the other.

Suddenly, a very strong wind came by and blew the kite spool right out of Scootaloo’s hooves. The kite followed the string and before any of the three knew it, her kite was stuck in a really tall apple tree.

“Oh no!” said all three. “How are we going to reach the kite all the way up there?”

Scootaloo looked at Apple Bloom and said, “Apple Bloom, do you think you could climb the tree since you’re so strong?”

“I would Scootaloo, but the first branch is too high! I cannot climb this tree.”

Scootaloo looked at Sweetie Belle and said, “Sweetie belle, could you use your magic to get my kite down?”

“I would Scootaloo, but my magic cannot reach that far. And even if I could, what if it was stuck on something?”

Then, Apple Bloom had an idea. “Scootaloo, why don’t you just fly up there?”

“Yeah! You could fly up to the top of the tall apple tree and get your kite back,” Sweetie Belle joined in.

Scootaloo shook her head no. “Sorry girls, but my wings aren’t strong enough to get up there just yet.” She hung her head low. “Now we’ll never get my kite back.”

“You can do it!” both Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle cheered!

Scootaloo looked up to see her friends happily cheering her on. She turned towards the tree with new found courage, unfurled her wings, and began to fly upwards!

At first, Scootaloo wasn’t going up very high at all. She was barely rising off the ground! But, her friends kept cheering her on.

She began going a little higher, saying to herself, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.”

Soon, the young pegasus was half way up the tree. But her wings were getting tired and it was getting harder to fly. But, her friends kept cheering her on! “Scoot-a-loo! Scoot-a-loo! Scoot-a-loo!”

Another strong gust of wind seemed to carry her wings farther up as if saying she could do it! She huffed and puffed, “I – Think – I – Can. I – Think – I – Can. I – Think – I – Can."

Soon, she was almost at the top of the tree! She just needed a little more! But her wings were so tired and she was almost out of breath. Her friends wouldn’t give up on her though and with one mighty large bellow they said, “You can do it Scootaloo!”

Scootaloo looked down at the ground and saw she was so high. She couldn’t give up now, now when she was so close! She huffed and puffed some more, “I – Think – I – Can. I – Think – I – Can. I – Think – I – Can.” She closed her eyes and focused as hard as she could on going up, still saying those magic words.

Suddenly, Scootaloo opened her eyes when she stopped hearing her friends’ cheer. She looked down and she saw she was higher than the really tall tree! And, she could see her kite! She had done it! With a giant smile on her face, the young pegasus swooped down and snatched the kite from the top of the tree and glided all the way down.

Upon landing, she smiled and said, “Look girls! I got my kite down! And it’s not broken too! It can still fly!”

“But not as high as you Scootaloo!” spoke a happy Sweetie Belle. “You went higher than the tree and higher than the kite! You really can do it! I hope that I can cast my magic as far as you flew one day Scootaloo.”

“I hope I become as strong as you are one day Scootaloo!” said Apple Bloom.

They all embraced in a wonderful hug with smiling faces before returning to fly their kites once more.

“Hey, girls,” Scootaloo spoke up, “maybe this time we should fly them farther away from the trees.”
