PROLOGUE: A most important question
The alarm rang for Dawn Sunrise. Beep. Beep. Beep. Dawn groggily stopped her alarm.
“WAKE UP, SIS!” yelled Dusk Sunset, her twin sister. “FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!”
Dawn sat up bolt upright in bed. She then got out of it, and pulled out a pair of black leggings, a pink top, adorned with her cutie mark, a rising sun, and a black tracksuit top, personalised with her name. Dusk Sunset, her over energetic twin sister wore a similar attire.
It was strange, thought Dawn, That she was named Dusk. But mom and dad always said that we were named for the times we were born at.
You see, Dusk was born on 31st December at 11:59 pm and Dawn was born at 4 am on 1st January. The 2 girls were identical, both had long, flowing red-gold hair and sharp royal blue eyes. While Dawn loved reading and writing and playing the guitar(a lot like Sunset), her sister adored playing the guitar but she had mounds of energy(a bit like Flash).
Now, today was their first day at High School, where they would meet new friends.
Dawn ran down the stairs for breakfast, her mom already in a simple ruby coloured dress. She was making toast, she knew it was the quickest when you have to be at school for 8:30 am.
“Morning, mom.” said Dawn. “Has dad gone already?”
Sunset turned. “Yeah, sorry. He’s with his band, the Flashbacks. Anyway, Canterlot High is a great school. You’re gonna love it.”
“Did you go there when you were a kid?” asked Dawn.
“I did,” replied Sunset. “When I was 18, my adoptive mom, Principal Celestia, gave me the job of keeping Canterlot High at its high standards. Your father and I well, we wanted to tell you that… you’ve been down at CHS, you and your sister, have been down since you were born because I am the Principal at Canterlot High. And Twilight is Vice-Principal. When you were born, I left it in Twilight’s hands, because I had to look after you. But now, you’re older. Come on, I want to introduce you to some of your teachers, some of my old friends.”
“SUNSET! OVER HERE, SUNSET SHIMMER!” yelled Pinkie Pie.
Sunset Shimmer parked her car in a free parking space. She held the doors open for her 2 kids. “Hey, Pinkie. Pinkie, meet my 2 kids, Dawn Sunrise and Dusk Sunset. Dawn, Dusk, this is your home-ec teacher for 9th and 10th grade home-ec, Mrs Pinkamena Diane Sandwich. But when you’re at home, call her Pinkie. At school, call her Mrs Sandwich.”
“And this is Lil’ Cheese. Lil’ Cheese, meet Principal Sunset Reginald Shimmer. She’s the new Principal at CHS and also your Science, art and Maths teacher. Sunset qualified to be a maths and science teacher at Canterlot University, while I qualified to be a baking teacher at Canterlot College. Hey, AJ!”
“Howdy, gals!” cried Applejack. “Heya Lil’ Cheese!”
“Hey, Applejack,” said Sunset. “AJ, this is Dawn and Dusk. My 2. Applejack teaches Junior and Senior years home-ec and sports, along with Rainbow Dash. How is she, by the way?”
“She’s well. She’s with Soarin’.”
“Hey, girls!” cried a voice. “How’s it goin’?”
“DASHIE!” yelled Pinkie Pie. “You’re here!”
Rainbow Dash hugged each of her friends in turn. “Where’s Twi?” asked Rainbow.
“She’s coming.” said Sunset. “And Rarity’s flight comes in later, correct?”
“Yes,” said Pinkie. “And Fluttershy’s in hospital. She’s due to have a baby soon.”
“Hey, Lil’ Cheese,” said Rainbow Dash, ruffling his hair. “And I guess you’re Dawn and Dusk, correct? Name’s Rainbow Dash. Teach Sports at Canterlot High.”
“Fluttershy teaches Biology,” said Sunset. “Your Aunt is on Maternity leave. So my brother, your uncle, will be replacing her. Hey, where is Nightstar, anyway?”
“Sunny!” cried a female voice.
Sunset turned. “Twilight! You’re here!”
“Hey, Tara,” said Dawn. “I’ve been excited to see you again.”
“Sunbun!” yelled a voice.
“Nightstar!” scolded Sunset. “I thought I told you not to call me by that name!”
Sunset gestured to her friends. “My mom, Sunbeam called me Sunbun when I was a filly. I hated that name. Nightstar, you’ve met Lil’ Cheese, right? This is Dawn and Dusk, your nieces. Dawn, Dusk, this is your Uncle Nightstar. He will be teaching Biology until Fluttershy comes back.”
“You coming in?” asked Rainbow Dash. “Come on, dude! Classes start in like 15 mins!”
Dawn Sunrise POV
My first lesson was maths, with my mom. I was expecting something else, but we did games. Let me tell you about my mom, Sunset Shimmer. She’s the best mom you can get in the whole wide world. She’s funny, kind, loyal and she’s smart! She’s awesome and great and so generous. Anyway, today, we just played games, a lot of Kahoot, a popular quiz game that everyone is obsessed with. Then I had Sport with Rainbow Dash. I hated it. I’m not sporty.
Then it was recess and I overheard Li’l Cheese talk to Amy about their parents’ past. I know my mom told me that they were good friends.
When it was finally home time, my mom and my uncle went to visit my aunt.
A pleasant surprise, a baby daughter. To celebrate, my mom and dad invited them over.
“RARITY!” yelled Pinkie.
When we got home, I asked my mom a question.
“Mom?” I asked. “At school I heard someone talk about your past. Will you tell us what happened?”
My mom looked worriedly at my dad.
“Okay.” she sighed. “But it all started in another world…”
