When it feels like there's nothing left

Chapter 1

Celestia was standing on her balcony lowering the sun. She was exhausted after her meeting with the dragon ambassador. She was trying to set up a trading route from Equestria, through the badlands and into dragon land. The dragon ambassador was never easy to deal with. It was days like these she wished her faithful student was still living in Canterlot.

There were two ponies Celestia let her guard down with. Her sister and her faithful student. It would probably be nice talking to Luna too, but she was not the same as Twilight. After the thousand years things had changed between them. They were not as close as before. They mostly spoke about political things now.

“Oh Twilight, I wish you were here,” Celestia said with a sigh. And like Faust had heard her, she felt a familiar magic, followed by a bright purple blitz and a pop.

“Twilight?”

Celestia turned. What she saw next, no one could have prepared her for. There on the ground laid her faithful student. Bloody and bruised. Celestia was shocked beyond belief. She quickly galloped over to her student and sat down before her. She put her head in her hooves. She was about to carry her over to the bed when Twilight spoke.

“I... I...” Twilight barely seemed able to talk. “I... love you Tia.”

Before Celestia could even take in what she heard Twilight closed her eyes. Her chest stopped rising. She just laid there.

“No, no this is not happening,” Celestia said hugging the lifeless mare in her hooves. “No. This can’t be happening. It has to be a bad dream,” It hit her like a sonic rainboom. It was really happening. Her faithful student was gone. A tear fell from her cheek, followed by another.

Celestia was now crying openly. It felt like the world was falling apart. This was the worst moment of her life. She just wanted to go back and change it all. The pain she felt when she had banished her sister was nothing compared to this. Twilight was more special to the princess than she had ever imagined.

Over the thousands of years the princess had lived she had never felt true love. It’s said that the princesses only feel true love once. When they find their loves and marry them they become immortal. That way the princesses will never have to experience their loved ones die. Celestia had found this true love. The mare lying in her hooves was the one, but Celestia had been too late. How could she not have realized it earlier? Her true love, lost forever.

She should have seen the signs. She should have known. She knew that she knew all along. She was just too damn busy ruling the land. She would trade the whole Equestria just for another minute with Twilight. Just one more minute with the pony of her dreams. Of course that was not possible and Celestia knew that.

Giving up. Giving up is the easy way out. Celestia had never been the one to take the easy way out, but right now. Right now her willpower was beyond ruined. There was no way she was going to fight through this. To Tartarus with her subjects. They could rule their own land. Maybe her sister could do it. Now it was her turn to take the easy path.

Killing an Alicorn requires two things. The first is a dagger made of pure gold. The second is an enchantment to the dagger only the Alicorn herself can cast. Due to this the only way an Alicorn can die is if they give in to their killer. This however is not known by a lot of ponies.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Life was worthless now. Why would she want to continue down this road of pain? There was nothing waiting for her at the end. She had always stayed on this road, waiting for the small path leading her to joy. It had never been easy. Ponies she cared for died, times of chaos reigned and villains kept trying to take away what she had worked so hard for. For years the path she had been waiting for laid before her, she was just too blind to see.
She was so used to this pain that she had missed the train that would take her into paradise. Now there was only pain. Why would she keep living in pain for the rest of her endless life if there was nothing waiting for her at the end? Because she had a land of subjects to keep happy? That was now Luna’s new job. Celestia was going away. Far away.
She slowly laid down Twilight´s head on the ground. She trotted over to the bookshelf located on one of the walls. She pulled a book and the shelf glided open. Behind it was a small box. Celestia opened the box and grasped the contents in her magic. She levitated it over to her desk where she sat down.
She grabbed a quill and a paper from the drawers on the desk. She quickly wrote down some words before laying the note on her bed. She then moved back to the balcony where Twilight´s body was. She laid down before Twilight and gave her a soft kiss on the forehead. The pain was going away soon; all it took was a little concentration and a sting.
The sun goddess cast a spell on the object she was holding with her magic. It was softly glowing with yellow magic. She was ready for what was to come. She would soon be happy again. She would soon be reunited with her faithful student, with her love. All it took was a little sting. She lifted the knife up to her heart. Everything was finally going to go her way. She felt a small sting, and then the darkness came.
“With the death of my student I could not take it anymore. From this day forth, Luna will rule the land of Equestria. I’m sorry I have failed you my subjects, but mostly I’m sorry that I have failed you, Luna. May the true love find its way to you one day.
Yours forever, Princess Celestia of Equestria.” Luna sighed.
“These were the final words of my sister. May the memory of her live on forever.” Luna finished her speech before unveiling a huge momentum. To the left was Twilight, proud as ever and to the right was Celestia. They were locked in a powerful hug. The statue was placed in the castle garden as a reminder of two of the greatest heroes Equestria had ever seen.
