It was starting to rain. It was just drizzling now, but Rainbow knew enough about weather to be certain it was gonna start pouring soon. The sound of rain hitting the rushing train window was like a melody matching the rhythm of Rarity tapping her nails against the side of her seat as she stared vacantly out the window.

Which was definitely a mood; Rainbow was in a real ‘staring vacantly out the window’ place herself to be honest.

Should she ask Rarity what she’s thinking? If Rarity was feeling contemplative, Rainbow didn’t wanna interrupt, but if she was feeling lonely then Rainbow did wanna interrupt! Decisions, decisions. Rainbow hated making decisions! It was so much easier to just live life on the first impulse that entered your brain, but Rainbow’s first impulse on this situation was to fret over it!

“Something on your mind, dear?” Rarity asked, and the irony wasn’t lost on Rainbow. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a brow more furrowed.”

“I was wondering the same thing, actually,” Rainbow said softly, smiling at Rarity, who smiled back and gave a gentle laugh, and Rainbow was feeling kinda gay about it. It’d been a while since Rarity and Rainbow had just hung out together like this, and Rainbow always forgot how pretty Rarity always was. “About you, I mean.”

“Ah, of course, of course,” Rarity nodded and laughed again, smiling at Rainbow Dash wish sent a jolt straight to her heart. “I admit, I am a tad on edge. Dealing with Celestia and every— oh dear, I just realized this will be the first time I’ve seen her since everything with Twilight went down. That can’t be right, can it? Oh no I think it is right, oh shit, oh god, oh I’m freaking out now.”

This looked like a job for wing hugs, so Rainbow jumped over to Rarity’s seat and wrapped her wing and her arm around her.

“You wanna talk about something else until we get there?” Rainbow asked. “Cuz like, yeah it’s gonna be awkward at best, so… I don’t blame you for freaking out.”

“I am not ‘freaking out’,” Rarity scoffed in disgust.

“Rarity you literally just said ‘I’m freaking out now’.”

“Oh. Yes, I suppose I did, didn’t I?” Rarity said flatly, Rainbow snorting into her hand. “Okay fine, force of habit, you shush!”

Rainbow cackled as Rarity gave her a playful shove, and Rainbow immediately shoved her back, with Rarity escalating the shoving war even further until the two were shoving each other super hard, Rainbow eventually shoving Rarity off the seat and onto the floor, and then toppling on top of her.

“Wow, you have a real talent for this,” Rarity said drolly, pinned underneath Rainbow and looking up at her with those gorgeous blue eyes.

“My cutie mark should just be a picture of me on top of a beautiful woman,” Rainbow snarked.

“Oh? Am I that beautiful?” Rarity grinned, and Rainbow jumped off of her and curled into a ball on the seat, Rarity climbing up next to her. “What’s the matter, darling? Feeling a little flustered?”

“Sh-shut up!” Rainbow squeaked. “What’s gotten into you, anyway? First Cadance and now this? Is Twilight not treating you right or something?”

“Just the opposite, in fact,” Rarity said, smiling at herself. “She’s treated me so well, and Fluttershy too. I used to be terrified of romance because— oh because of a million silly reasons, but now that I’ve experienced the real thing? I guess I just can’t get enough of it.”

“Wait,” Rainbow squinted and let her mouth hang open as the gears in her brain click-clacked slowly into place. “Wait, do you like, actually like me? Like I mean like-like me?”

“Darling,” Rarity laughed and booped Rainbow’s nose, “I love you.”

You ever, like,, you’re dealing with some complex machinery and it just explodes on you? That’s what Rainbow’s brain felt like it was doing. Or maybe her heart? Or both? She just? Like? WHAT!!!!

“Wuh?”

Nicely done, Rainbow.

“Haha, I’m sorry if that’s a little sudden,” Rarity said and put her hand on Rainbow’s leg. “But the truth is, I do love you. You’re one of my dearest friends, and if being with Twilight and Fluttershy has taught me anything, it’s that the line between friendship and romance is razor thin.”

“Oh,” Rainbow said contemplatively, and then blinked a couple times. “You wanna make out?”

“Absolutely.”
