Chapter One: In Which the Most Popular TikToker Ever Gets a New Pair of Headphones

It was a normal day for Charli. Get up, do hair and makeup, film some TikToks, and then just relax and play Animal Crossing for the rest of the day. It was quarantine, after all. She got out of bed with a spritely step and went through the process. As she was wrapping up, she decided she wanted to get some breakfast. She made her way downstairs to a knock on the door. She opened it cautiously - who would be visiting the D'Amelio house at this hour, in the middle of the coronavirus outbreak? Was it another one of her loony fans? Oh, boy! It was just her best friend for life, Staseiy Szmmiyth!
"Hi, Staseiy Szmmiyth! How are you on this fine summer morning?" she asked jubilantly. Wait a second, "Staseiy Szmmiyth, why aren't you wearing a mask and staying six feet away from me? It is like no one cares about these coronavirus regulations anymore. Do you not realize that there are actually a lot MORE cases of coronavirus than there were in March? Or have you just decided to ignore that because you don't want to face the cold, hard truth?" Charli was concerned, yes, but it was also her best friend for life, Staseiy Szmmiyth, so all was forgiven in an instant, "Anyway, what have you been up to?"
Staseiy Szmmiyth was so disappointed in herself for not following coronavirus regulations that she had tuned out for a bit, until Charli asked what she had been doing. "Well, I actually bought you these headphones! I thought they looked really cool - and they were quite expensive!" the girl said exuberantly.
"Oh, Staseiy Szmmiyth, I couldn't have asked for a better gift! Thank you so much!" Charli expressed her gratitude. She was about to lean in for an air hug, but then she remembered coronavirus regulations. The duo just gave each other an air hug instead, "Well, I would invite you inside, but that's not really safe because the coronavirus is still raging. I'll see you around, Staseiy Szmmiyth!" Charli slammed the door in her face because she felt like it. Anyway, Staseiy Szmmiyth would know she meant no harm. She dropped the bag on the floor next to the D'Amelio front door and walked away.
Charli walked over to her kitchen to finally prepare her breakfast in peace. Staseiy Szmmiyth was always going to be her best friend for life, but that didn't mean she couldn't be a nuisance sometimes. Charli was washing a nectarine when The Legend Herself: Dixie D'Amelio came down the stairs.
"Hi, Charli," she said, overall being a mood and not having energy in the morning.
"Hi, Dixie!" Charli responded because for she was practically bursting with excitement. She had some great ideas for some TikTok videos to film, she just had to get through her morning routine first!
As she bit into her nectarine, Charli perused her TikTok For You page. Nothing noticeable, just the latest "unproblematic" TikToker's apology video for being horrible and some dances with horribly colored neon lighting in dark rooms. She didn't have much else to do, so she went through the millions of DMs she had from random people on the app. People saying she was an inspiration to them were the most frequent messages. Charli though pensively, Tell me something I don't know! There were always the weird ones, like people sending her pictures of them in Halloween costumes. She didn't care. And then there were the threats that people were coming to her house to burgle her, but she didn't really believe those. People were always trying to scare her and her family.
"Oh my god, I'm so bored," she grumbled to herself. Why didn't she have anything to do?
"Just find something to do then," The Legend Herself: Dixie D'Amelio told her. Charli had forgotten her sister was even there. She made a grunt at her, and stormed off. Charli decided she would just play Animal Crossing because that's what everyone else was doing. But first, she had to film some TikToks.
Charli went to her bedroom. She turned on her colorful lights and put on a song. She lip-synced it and looked around the room. This one would get more likes than she had followers, she could feel it with every muscle in her body, every blood cell in her veins, every pulse of her heart, every hair on her head, every skin cell on her skin, every limb on her person. It would be fantastic! Charli posted it without a doubt that everyone would know how to lipsync this song. It was killer.
Charli proceeded to film some more TikToks, a dance or two here, more lipsyncing to bad songs with the colorful lights there. Nothing too bold, of course. Once the girl decided she was good for the day, she grabbed her Nintendo Switch and flopped onto her bed. It was time to play some Animal Crossing. She spent a solid few hours engaging in quests with the villagers and customizing her characters. It was so much fun! Before she knew it, her stomach was grumbling for lunch. She paused to upload one of the TikToks she had filmed after breakfast, finished up bucking apples in Animal Crossing, and went downstairs. It was time to have some lunch.
She threw together a low maintenance meal and sat beside her mom as she ate.
"So, how are you? What are you doing?" Charli asked her mom. She was writing some important documents it seemed, but Charli didn't know much about them and she was curious. What were the important documents for?
"Oh, I'm just doing taxes, nothing special, you know. Oh, darn it, Charli! You made me lose my train of thought! Now I have to start all over again," her mom flipped.
"Yo, mom. Chill out. It's not my fault you got sidetracked," Moms could be so annoying sometimes.
"Yes. It. IS! Charli, you always find a way to.. to get in the way! I'm so disappointed in you! You do this every time. You are so ignorant of your surroundings. Oh my god!" her mom was officially insane.
"What's the commotion?" The Legend Herself: Dixie D'Amelio appeared from the other room.
"Mom is just being insane, blaming me for her own problems. Nothing out of the usual," Charli shaded her mom like there was no tomorrow.
"You IMBECILE! Go to your room!" her mom screamed.
"Guys, I think you need to step away from each other," The Legend Herself: Dixie D'Amelio recommended.
"I think I will. I need to use the restroom anyway," their mom said, "This isn't over!" Charli's mom glared at her while she stalked off.
"Wow, mom went batty there," Charli said, "Thanks for saving me from her wrath!"
"No pro-" The Legend Herself: Dixie D'Amelio was cut off by the sound of glass shattering a couple rooms away from where they were chatting, "Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?" Charli asked, because despite her mom blaming her problems on her, Charli actually wasn't the most aware of her surroundings all the time.
"I think something broke in the room over there. Let me check it out," Dixie told her, "You stay here,"
Charli went back to her phone, not thinking much of it.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!" Dixie screamed from the other room. Charli jolted up.
Their mom came storming back into the dining room, "You girls better stop fighti- Where's Dixie?"
"She went to investigate what she thought was something breaking a few rooms over," Charli informed her nonchalantly.
"Oh my lord! This is not going to be good!" Charli's mom rushed over, Charli herself following behind cautiously. Whatever Dixie was so afraid of wasn't going to get her if she had anything to say about it, that's for sure. The famous girl was surprised by what she saw.
