Chapter 2: Nightmare and Comfort

Chase started to wake up and heard birds chirping and saw butterflies wandering around. He was in the middle of a field of beautiful flowers everywhere. He then saw something that looked really familiar. He ran towards the figure, but it suddenly disappeared in a puff of smoke. Then, Chase saw a big stone figure that looked like a bird and a cat. He walked towards the statue. “Wow...,” he said.

Chase slowly reached out his arm and touched it, until it started to crack open like an egg, until streaks of fire and lightning popped out, then the statue descended underneath the surface. The ground began to quake and the sky turned purple with stars. “Wh-what’s happening!?” he exclaimed in fear as he ran out of the field of flowers. “Sunset, help!” When he made it out of the field, the figure rose up and became a giant part cat and part bird monster covered in fire and lightning, and it started following Chase, who started to flee for his life.

The monster then stuck out its snake headed tongue and it started to chomp its jaws, but it missed Chase. Until he reached a dead end, Chase was trapped in the alley where Sunset found him, and the monster revealed his aunt’s face. “No! NO! NO! STAY AWAY FROM ME!” Chase exclaimed. The monster then looked at him for the last time, then while Chase was screaming, the beast ate him in a flash! Chase woke up screaming in fear, then he jumped out of his bed and ran to Sunset’s room.

Sunset was sleeping with a smile on her face while her belly and chest rise up and down due to her slow breathing. Until all of a sudden, she heard Chase sobbing outside her door. She saw that he was scared.

“Chase? Are you okay, baby?” she asked. Chase ran towards Sunset, hopped on her bed, and wrapped himself around her torso, and he started bawling like a little baby as he laid his head on her soft chest. Sunset felt him shaking like a Chihuahua and her shirt started getting wet from his tears. She wrapped her arms around him, and stroked his hair and gently rubbed and patted his back.

“Shhhhhh... shhhhhh... it’s okay, Chase. I’m here. I’m here,” Sunset calmly said as she tried to calm the poor boy. “Did you have a nightmare?” Chase nodded and then pressed his head closer to her chest. Sunset cradled one of her arms under his legs and placed Chase on her lap. “Tell me about your dream.”

Chase told Sunset how he ended in the big field of beautiful flowers and the big bird-cat monster chasing him, and how it ate him and showed his aunt’s face in his dream.

“Oh, Chase,” Sunset said soothingly, as she patted his shoulder and rubbed his back.

Chase sniffed. “I didn’t mean to wake you, Sunset. I’m sorry,” Chase apologized. “No, no, no. Chase, you don’t need to apologize,” Sunset said. “You didn’t do anything wrong. It’s okay, you were just dreaming. Everybody gets scared sometimes.” She then pressed his head on her chest.

Chase looked up at her with his eyes all red from his tears while she continued to stroke his hair and rub his back. “Sunset?” Chase asked. “C-Can I s-s-sleep with you p-please? I-I’m scared.” Sunset looked at his sad little eyes and kissed his forehead. “Of course,” Sunset said as she laid back down on her bed.

Chase then crawled underneath the covers and started whimpering like a puppy. Sunset smiled warmly and wrapped her arm around his shoulder and he curled up alongside her with his head near her chest and his arms on top of her belly. Sunset blushed and rubbed his shoulder and he finally went to sleep, then she gave him a small kiss on the cheek. She put her hand on his cheek and stroked his hair..

Sunset began to think before hitting the sack. ‘I wish I knew what happened with his family. They should be looking after him. Guess I’ll find out in the morning.’
