Requiem For A Journal

The Only Chapter

At the Castle of Friendship, Spike...Twilight’s No. #1 assistant was walking around the building, looking for one of his best friends. Namely, Starlight Glimmer...Twilight’s graduated pupil/“sister” and the current headmare of the school of Friendship.

He was looking where the library was. “Okay. Library... Library... Where did they put the library?” he wondered as he looked and saw a whole bunch more rooms in the Castle. Starlight was right: Twilight’s castle DID look a little smaller from the outside.

He kept walking to find the library, and got to what looked like it. But when he opened the door, he noticed Starlight Glimmer brushing her teeth. She caught a good look at the dragon, and was startled. “Mmmmph!” Starlight said in shock, before switching to excited/nervous. “Morning, Spike!” She said, a little cheerful.

“Whoops! Sorry, Starlight!” He said to her. “I guess I'm still trying to find my way around. You don't happen to know where the library is, do you?”

“Next door on the left!” she said, pointing to said door.

Spike saw it. “Oh. Thanks!” he said as he made his way inside. He took a look at some of the books that he and Twilight looked at together during his “sister’s” time in both Canterlot and Ponyville. Every time Spike looked at one of those books, he smiled with joy as he remembered a memory he had that was connected to each book he saw. The Power Ponies comic, the Inspiration Manifestation book, Predictions and Prophecies, Perfection: The Impossible Pursuit...He remembered it all as if it were yesterday.

He looked at each book and remembered all the times he had with Twilight and her friends. As he looked at them, he felt a little tear from his eye. He knew that he and Twilight were both moving to Canterlot sometime and that they were going to miss their friends. He put one of the books down, and started to feel some sadness flowing through him as he wept loudly in the library. So loud, it caught the attention of Starlight as she wondered what had made that noise.

She rushed over to the library, and saw the young drake crying. It broke Starlight’s heart to see him crying like this. Upon seeing him in such an emotional state, she quickly rushed over to him, and wiped his tears with her hoof. “Spike!” She said in shock and worry as she comforted him, knowing that she couldn’t bear to see her best friend in such a state. “Spike...what’s wrong?” She asked. She was like a mother figure to him, like Twilight was.

“Oh, nothing.” He said, trying to hide his feelings from her.

Starlight was concerned. She didn’t believe it, not one bit. She carefully grabbed Spike, put him on her lap and raised his head making her eyes meet with him. “Spike, you don’t have to lie to me.” She said, upon seeing him like this. “I can tell that you’re really upset, and it hurts me too. Please tell me. I don’t like seeing you like this.”

“But, I am fine, Starlight!” Spike said with a lump in this throat. “I’m just...I’m just...” he could only give out a little squeak as his eyes overflowed once again. Finally, he gave up holding in his emotions an burst out in tears as he sobbed in Starlight’s coat. Starlight understood why he was feeling like his and gently rocked him, like Mrs. Cake rocked the twins.

“Oh, Spike!” She said as she carefully stroked his scales. “Ssssshhhhhh.....it’s alright.” She gently told him as she hugged the little drake with all her might. “I’m right here. Please don’t cry.”

Once Spike had calmed down, Starlight gave him a tissue to wipe his tears. “You ready to talk to me now?” She asked, looking at him and smiling.

Spike nodded solemnly as he put the tissue aside, straightened up, and took a big deep breath. “You see, the truth is...” he told the light pink unicorn. “I’m gonna leave for Canterlot, and I’m worried that I’ll never see you OR my friends again!” It nearly killed him to say those words.

Starlight was shocked as she now knew why Spike was crying so loudly in the library. “What are you talking about, Spike?” She asked, surprised. “We’re your friends! Of course you’ll see us again. What makes you think that?”

“Well, since Celestia and Luna chose Twilight to be their successor and that I’ll be going with her, I feel like this is the end of our friendship!” He said sadly.

Starlight was surprised upon hearing what he just said. “Why in Equestria do you think that?” She asked him.

“Because...” he paused for a moment. “When Twilight was sent to Ponyville, I went with her. And I met some nice and awesome friends, like Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, & Fluttershy! And even you!” He pointed to her as he said that. “And now, Twilight and I are going back to where the two royal sisters were, and I feel like I’m leaving a lot of my life behind!”

Starlight looked at him and pulled him in for a hug. “That is not true, Spike.” She calmly told him. “Ponyville and Canterlot are your homes, and you are anything BUT going away for good.” She quietly patted his back. “You’re still one of the best friends I’ve ever met! Heck, even to the others! Ask Fluttershy and the others! I bet they’ll also know how you’ll feel!”

“R...really?” Spike said, slowly smiling at her.

“Yes, Spike.” She told him, smiling sweetly at him. “And you’re much more than that! You’re like a little brother to me and Twilight, and well as a boyfriend to Rarity and a helper to all of us. And we all love you! I love you! We’re like a family, Spike. And no one can EVER take that away!”

Spike’s eyes glistened. “Oh, Starlight!” He said, as he cried tears of joy. “That’s the sweetest thing you ever said to me!” He hugged her with all his might.

“I love you, Spike.” Starlight said, as she hugged her dragon brother. “And that’s the truth.” They hugged just like any married couple or siblings ever would.

“Thanks, Starlight. I was a little emotional about heading to Canterlot for Twilight’s coronation.” He said.

“Just a little?” She said, jokingly as she playfully punched him.

“Ok. Maybe a lot!” Spike admitted. “Reading all the books in the library made it hard to be afraid, because I knew what it was like when Twilight and I had our adventures. Knowing something about the past made it easier to deal with our problems in the present, even the scary ones. It's our relationships that really count, and we have to maintain them.”

“Yeah!” Starlight said. “We should! But since you, Twilight, and the others...especially me will be living in different areas. I'm not exactly sure how.” Her voice drooped towards the end of her sentence, feeling a bit sad.

“I bet Twilight knows.” Spike said, comforting her. “I bet when she becomes ruler, she’ll have us all meet once a moon to share our friendship with each other.” Spike grinned, knowing that Twilight could possibly have an idea when they meet once a moon for all this. “She might even form a council of Friendship, if she could!”

Starlight smiled, and just then, she quickly thought of an idea! “I've just thought of a great idea!” She told the drake. “Why don't we make a keepsake memory book and put all our favourite memories in it, just like Twilight’s friendship journal?”

Spike beamed. “Really?” He asked in excitement.

“Sure!” Starlight said in excitement. “That way when Twilight moves to Canterlot to assume her new position as the ruler, she could have a little bit of something to remember us all by! And maybe some day, she might have a student that could learn and accomplish just as much as we have someday!”

“What a great idea!” Spike said a he jumped up happily. “I know who our first friend to get the memories will be! Rarity!”

“That sounds like a great place to start, Spike!” Starlight said, as she started to get out an empty box and fill it with some art supplies. “Wanna get some art supplies and go roundup our first friend?”

“Do I ever!” Spike said. “Let’s go!”

And with that, Spike and Starlight both got the art supplies they needed and were ready to make their memory book, they would give it to Twilight, so that she would remember all the happy, sad and in-between moment she had with her friends, and treasure them for as long as she could, and someday, she could have a student that was just like her, and would gather up a new set of friends, who would accomplish just as much as Twilight and her friends have someday. Maybe they would even be sent to Ponyville to help the magic of Friendship Grow! So many possibilities, and so many outcomes the future would hold. They had a lot of time to decide what would happen in the future! And when the time came, the decision would be made, and they, along with Twilight and the rest of the Mane six, would be ready for whatever came their way! It would be great new era for the Mane Six, Spike and Starlight! What fun surprises would the future hold?

But first, they would have to go find some friends to help out some memories in Twilight’s soon-to-be memory book, and they knew which pony to help them out with the memories first.

They would go to Rarity’s boutique.
