//------------------------------// // Chapter 8: Updating and taking it a bit too seriously. // Story: Ponies vs Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden Memories // by Lucky Star Kona-chan //------------------------------// Rainbow was up early in the morning, eating some breakfast as she did some more free duels before going to work. Between last night and this moment, Rainbow managed to get a few useful cards, not too much really but it was something at least. This was until one of her ears twitched at the sound of her magical vision receiving a message. “I wonder who that could be?” she asked to no one as she took a sip of her drink. Leaving the game alone for a bit she flew over to the device to check the message. Navigating through the menus she found a message from Konata, “Girls, I have been talking with Ini and we decided to make your game a little more interesting. I have sent all of you a special card to modify the game to the new version; the general changes have been listed in a side note. I’ll go check on you in a few days, until then enjoy.” Rainbow flashed an excited smile, “alright! I don’t think I’m the only one who heard this by now, so I guess I’ll wait for tonight’s session to play with Everypony…” She snorted, “As if! I’m going to try this right now!” With this said, Rainbow materialized the attachment card that came with the message and even if she wasn’t a fan of reading manuals, she had to this time due to not knowing how to do this properly. To her surprise it wasn’t all that hard to do, and after waiting for around five minutes for the process to complete she gave the new version a few tries before going to work. Like Rainbow thought, she wasn’t the only one who noticed the message but she didn’t expect everypony to have the update as well. “Ya seem surprised Rainbow, did ya see something unexpected?” Applejack asked, as she held a smug smile. She knew quite well Rainbow didn’t expect all of them to have the new version. “How did you even figure it out?” Rainbow asked, genuinely confused. Applejack’s expression couldn’t be any flatter, “Rainbow,” she started with a tone matching her facial expression, “Ah’ can read too, ya know.” “Oh come on, Dashie! Isn’t it great that everypony got the new version thingy?” Pinkie added. Rainbow flicked away a stray of mane that got over her eye, “yeah, I guess.” She admitted. Twilight on the other hoof was more interested in the changes that were made for this new version of the game, holding the manual in front of her with her magic she read every detail. “Interesting,” she said to herself. As she wasn’t doing anything for the time being Rarity asked the obvious, “What’s interesting, darling?” “Oh…” Twilight came back to reality and blushed slightly for being so invested in reading the changes. “Ahem…” clearing her throat to compose herself, she started, “it seems the game has been modified in a way that let us get more cards per duel, make it more user friendly you could say.” “You get five per duel now,” Rainbow said as she powered on, her gamestation. “Why Am’ not surprised, ya played tis’ already Rainbow?” Applejack continued with her flat tone and unamused expression. “What did you expect me to do? Wait?” Rainbow replied back as if she made the most valid point ever. “Girls!” Twilight raised her voice, getting their attention, “can we please not make a scene right now?” Both mares looked away, and then apologized. “Thank you,” Twilight said with a smile. “Umm… what else is different Twilight?” Fluttershy asked meekly. “Oh… right,” Twilight giggled sheepishly, “sorry about that, where were we?” she scanned the changes again, “ok, to make up for the better rewards, the difficulty has been raised accordingly, it doesn’t state how much but we can expect a bit more challenge from now on. Also the drop tables have been slightly modified as well, fixing an issue where the game had 0% chance of dropping certain cards making it impossible to complete the collection.” “So the game was flawed to begin with?” Rarity asked. Twilight nodded, “it seems like it, I wonder how that happened,” she said as she rubbed her chin with a hoof. Rainbow as impatient as she was, expressed her mind, “can we start? The changes are cool and all that stuff, but it’s getting boring to just listen to you Twi.” Letting out a sigh, Twilight nodded, “alright, let’s get some duels done before resuming the storyline, shall we?” Then the six mares won some duels, some easier than others. After some victories they got quite a few cards, some useful, others not that much, but the five card drop did help them improve their decks quite a bit. With their powered up decks they decided to tackle the next part of the game. Music: Card Shop Getting out of the menus they were greeted by Teana in a more modern outfit and asked them, “what do you want to do?” “Continuing the game, duh,” Rainbow replied. The others rolled their eyes. After that the four standard options from the card shop appeared. They saved their games and proceeded to leave the shop. Teana wished them good luck upon doing so. “Why, thank you darling, you’re a real sweetheart,” Rarity complimented to the non-existent being. Music: Preliminary Face-Off After a fade to black transition, they were brought to a stadium setting, then the commentator said, “Preliminary Match #1 (Each of their names) vs Rex Raptor!” A smug looking kid with red and pink hair, wearing a red hat and a green jacket appeared soon after. “Heh, you’re my first opponent? Guess you’re gonna be watching me in the finals!” The kid stated with confidence. “Is that so, partner?” AJ replied back. “Guess this kid needs some flank whooping,” Rainbow added. “Why is almost everyone on this game a brute?” Rarity asked, having a point actually. “Lack of creativity and everypony needs to be eeeeeeeeeevil,” Pinkie joined the conversation. After finishing the dialog, everypony went to the build deck screen, then the duels started. Music: Preliminary Match Twilight’s duel. In her starting hoof, Twilight drew her strongest monster Aqua Dragon(A2250/D1900), but decided to combine Summoned Skull(A2500/D1200) instead. Then, she finished her turn. Her opponent left a Jupiter monster face down and ended his turn. “So far, so good,” Twilight said as her next turn came, this time she summoned her Aqua Dragon and attacked the face down, which resulted to be Prevent Rat(A500/D2000) a high defense monster, but it wasn’t high enough and got destroyed. Then, she attacked with Summoned Skull directly. After her turn, her opponent once again set a Jupiter monster face down and ended his turn. ‘Could it be the same creature again?’ she thought as she combined Thousand Dragon(A2400/D2000) and attacked with Aqua Dragon revealing that her supposition was correct, the face down monster was indeed Prevent Rat again. Having getting rid of it, her other two monsters did a big deal of damage to her opponent’s life points. Her opponent set down a Uranus monster this time and ended his turn. “Alright, time to finish this,” she summoned La Jinn the Mystical Genie of the Lamp(A1800/D1000) using it’s Saturn guardian star and attacked the face down getting the star advantage buff on her monster, destroying Pragtical(A1900/D1500) and winning the duel with her other monsters. She got S Pow Rank and her 5 starchips, the cards she got weren’t all that good though. Applejack’s duel went smoothly as well, one of her monsters got destroyed by her opponent though, but she never lost the control of the duel getting her S Pow 5 stars rank. Rarity showed no mercy, but her carelessness made her attack a monster with high defense, making her receive damage this in combination with her combining way too many cards caused her to get A Pow with 4 stars. Pinkie went for a more risky strategy and actually managed to lose the first time, but on her second try she pull it off and got a S Tec 5 Stars rank, getting her some spell and trap cards. Fluttershy had no issues in getting her S Pow 5 stars rank, since her deck was the strongest in terms of standalone cards. As this happened, there was a pony that got a bit too much into it. “Alright! I set a card face down and end my turn, show me what you got kid!” Rainbow said out loud. But there was something else that was different. Rainbow got attacked directly by Sword Arm Dragon(A1750/D2030) as she had no monsters on the field yet. “That’s a strong monster,” she smiled, “but not enough! My turn, Draw!” looking at her cards she nodded to herself, “I summon Punished Eagle(A2100/D1800) in attack mode with its Saturn star, then I activate the field spell, Mountain. Getting all winged beast, thunder and dragon monsters a 500 attack and defense boost! Now Punished Eagle, destroy Sword Arm Dragon!” she said as she pointed a hoof forward. The others noticed how Rainbow wasn’t actually pressing the buttons on her controller, but decided to not comment on it yet. “I end my turn,” Rainbow said after getting some damage done. Her opponent only set a Uranus monster and ended the turn. “Heh, getting scared now? Well it doesn’t matter. My turn, Draw!” her smile grew more, “now I combine Celtic Guardian(A1400/D1200) with The Judgement Hand(A1400/D700), to form Judge Man(A2200/D1500) and summon it with Sun Star in attack mode. Now Judge Man, attack his monster!” She yelled repeating the same motion with her hoof, her attack destroyed Pragtical, “Punished Eagle, direct attack!” cutting her opponent’s life point to almost half she had a satisfied smile, “I end my turn.” The opponent set another Uranus monster once again and ended his turn. “Well, this is the end for you buddy. Draw!” a look at her face told the others that she was enjoying herself so they waited for her duel to end, “I summon Parrot Dragon(A2000/D1300) in attack mode with Saturn Star, my dragon gets boosted by the Mountain field so he gets an extra 500 points, now Parrot Dragon, attack the face down monster! Due to star advantage Parrot Dragon gets another extra 500 points,” she explained for some reason. The others were giggling some at Rainbow’s antics and Pinkie was eating popcorn. “Alright, Judge Man, Punished Eagle attack his life points directly and end this duel!” with that final order her monsters attacked, bringing her the victory, it was a bit anti-climatic that after all that show, she only got an A pow 4 stars rank. “Oh, come on!” she threw her hooves in the air in frustration. She then heard the giggling of her friends and got somewhat flustered. Twilight was the one recovering first, “Rainbow,” she called getting the attention of the blushy Pegasus, “how were you playing without using the controller?” she asked. “Huh?” Rainbow tilted her head in confusion, “it’s on the notes, I thought you read it entirely Twi.” Now it was Twilight’s turn to tilt her head to the side in confusion, “what?” she picked up the notes and scanned them over, “where?” “Huh…” Rainbow threw papers all over until she found a specific page, “this one.” “Voice mode?” Twilight read the title of the page, then went back to her own pages, but didn’t found that one, “I don’t have that page on the notes I got.” She looked at the rest, “Anypony else has that page?” but after looking, all of them shook their heads, “Huh, curious.” “Wait, so I’m the only one who knew of this?” Rainbow asked as she came to a realization, “Kona!” she screamed in rage and embarrassment. The others shared a laugh and kept an overall good mood for this session.
