A New Spell

Chapter 1

It was yet another beautiful day in Ponyville as a rainbow maned pegasus made her way to the library to pick up the newest book in the Daring Do saga, having just finished her shift of weather detail which consisted of ten seconds of actual sky clearing and hours of napping.

Rainbow dash pushed open the door, entering the library, “Hey, Twilight you here?” Which immediately felt like a stupid question after it passed her lips.

“Of course.”, came the giggled reply.

“Right, heh where else would you be? So... is it here yet?”

Twilight stared blankly for a second, “Oh! Yes, here it is,” she then floated the book into Rainbow’s saddlebag, “there you go, the new Daring Do.” She then shot a warm smile.

Rainbow Dash returned the smile and then turned, but felt herself stop at the door. Dash, what are you doing? You didn’t come all this way just for a book.

“Hey, twi... mind if I read it here?”

Twilight peered up from the book she had been vigorously reading since Rainbow had gotten there, “Umm... It is a library.”

Rainbow felt her normally cyan face grow red, “Right...”

Twilight immediately turned back to the massive tome in front of her, Rainbow slowly walked to a well lit and comfortable spot and began trying to read. Good going Dash, now she probably thinks you’re stupid for asking such an obvious question. Shut up inner voice, I’m trying to read. That isn’t why you’re here and you know it. And, it was true she knew exactly why she was there, ever since the wedding she saw her friend Twilight differently. Not that much differently, she already liked the purple egghead but since then she really liked her, and had absolutely no clue how to go about it. All these thoughts and internal arguments made it practically impossible to concentrate on the adventures of Daring Do, so she tried to drown them out with external conversation.

“So, What are you reading?”

Several seconds of silence fell before Twilight acknowledged the question, “I’m learning a new spell.”

“Oh? What’s it do?”, for the first time in her life honestly interested in magic.

Twilight giggled, “That is a secret.”

A secret? That’s not like her, she’d usually spend hours explaining all the new spells she learned and then explain their purpose in perfect detail. Somethings up..., “So why’s it a secret?” Rainbow replied trying to be as nonchalant as possible.

“Because I don't want you to know just yet.” She answered with yet another giggle.

Rainbow knew her friend well enough to know that her giggling meant that she was being playful so Rainbow decided to persist, “So... If I were somepony else, let’s say... Pinkie Pie. Would you tell me?”

Twilight stopped her reading and rubbed her chin with her hoof seriously considering the question, which Rainbow found adorable in a nerdy kind of way, she then spoke, “Well... You aren’t Pinkie, you are Rainbow Dash. So the question is moot.” Satisfied with her own answer she turned back to her book.

Rainbow Dash was now agitated with her unicorn friend. What is she keeping from me? And why? What if maybe... Nah, Twilight wouldn’t do that... or would she? “It isn’t anything serious is it? Like disease curing stuff or something?”

Twilight turned to Rainbow Dash, her face painted with confusion, “Why would I be studying that?”

Crap! “Umm... I thought that... well you know...”

“No. I don’t. Why would you ask that, is something wrong?”

“Well... you wouldn’t tell me what was going on and I thought maybe it was because you were really sick and were looking for a curing spell and weren’t telling me cause you didn’t want me to worry...” Rainbow mumbled, face turned down to the ground getting redder with each word.

Her attention was ripped back up when Twilight burst out in uproarious laughter practically rolling on the floor as she did.

This caused Rainbow Dash to lose her cool. The next thing she knew she was pinning down her, still giggling, purple friend, huffing in anger. “What’s so funny, huh?”

Twilight finally calmed her laughter and looked into her friends rage filled rose eyes, “You, Rainbow. What would make you think such a silly thing anyway?”

Rainbow suddenly felt very stupid, “I don’t know okay? I just get worried when you keep stuff from me...”

Twilight noticed that the once irritated rose hued orbs were now bathed in very legitimate concern for her, which in turn caused her to feel terrible for teasing Rainbow, “You really want to know?”

“Yes!” Rainbow Dash yelled.

She suddenly felt her face pulled down to Twilight’s. At first she couldn’t believe it, but there she was standing over her friend Twilight, their lips locked in a soft, affectionate kiss. As much as she was surprised by this turn of events she couldn’t deny that she had, in fact, wanted this for a long time.

After what seemed like an eternity Twilight released her grip and slowly lowered her head back to the floor, “That’s what I was studying.”

Rainbow’s mind was still a jumbled mess, she couldn’t make sense of much of anything that had just happened. Finally her mind focused enough to realize Twilight’s last statement, “Wait... what? I thought you said you were learning a new spell!”

Twilight giggled, mostly at what she was about to say, “It felt pretty magical to me.”

Rainbow stared blankly at the purple pony, as a smile crept across her face, which progressed to a grin, which evolved fully into an outburst of laughter.

“What?”, Twilight inquired as to why she was being laughed at, the book she had been reading didn’t mention that her love interest would laugh at her after the kiss.

“You... so cheesy... couldn’t believe it...”, her broken sentence came out in between more laughter and gasps for air.

Twilight only glared in response.

“Well... heh, it was pretty cute, I guess...”, She said finally calming the laughter and looking back into the beautiful violet eyes of her friend, “So, does that mean you like me?”

Twilight again simple answered with a look.

“Heh, right, stupid question...”, she said now turning a bright red and rubbing the back of her neck, “Well that’s awesome because I...”

Her sentence was cut short as Twilight pulled Rainbow Dash closer than before locking her in another kiss, as a tear rolled down her cheek.

Later that afternoon Rainbow Dash was laying on the floor of the library enjoying the new Daring Do adventure and her new marefriend’s company, who was resting her lavender head on Rainbow’s back.

Twilight turned to face behind Rainbow’s rear end as a glowing scroll and quill floated lowly off the ground. she giggled internally and read the items on the list: Get New books for the library from the delivery ponies. Check. Read ‘A Beginners Guide to Confessions’. Check. Give Spike the day off to spend with the CMC. Check. Talk to Rainbow Dash. Check. Kiss her. She let out a silent excited giggle. Check. She then paused on the last item on the list.

“Rainbow?”, she said nuzzling the pegasus’s neck.

“Yeah?”, Rainbow replied, returning the nuzzle to Twilight’s forehead.

“I’m glad I finally told you how I feel.”

“Me too.”, Rainbow answered followed by lightly kissing Twilight then slowly returning to the Daring Do book.

Become Rainbow Dash’s very special somepony... check. She then hid the quill and parchment behind a cushion and allowed herself to drift off, nestled into her marefriends side, comfortably blanketed by a single cyan wing.
