//------------------------------// // Getting to Safety // Story: How it Came to Be // by ShowShine //------------------------------// A purple dragoness with dark blue scales laid on the floor of a cave, staring at her three eggs. One was light pink with dark pink stripes, one was dark green with light green splotches, and the last one was light purple with dark purple spots. It was the smallest out of the other eggs. A large grin remained on her face as she stared at them. Love was filled in her eyes. “Haze, how long have you been staring at the eggs?” Her husband, Rubble asked. He was brown the green scales and two curly horns. Haze let out a childish giggle. “Five hours!” She stated happily, kicking her legs a little. Rubble playfully rolled his eyes. His wife was too sweet for her own good. She was incredibly nice which could get her killed in the Dragonlands. Most dragons didn’t even get married, but Rubble loves looking at the sparkle in Haze’s eye everytime she spoke. The only thing that stopped other dragons from picking on them was that they were slightly bigger and constantly has to walk on all fours. It was only a height difference of a few inches though. “I still think it would be safer to leave the eggs in nesting den.” Rubble commented as he shoveled some gems in his mouth. “If they stayed in the nesting den, anyone could steal them and I wouldn’t be able to look at them.” Haze explained with a pout. Rubble loved his wife but sometimes she could be hard to bargain with. He closed his eyes as she started to sing to the eggs. He just knew that one of there children were going to love music like her. “What do you think the hatchlings will look like?” Haze asked excitedly. Rubble thought for a moment. “Well I know for sure that one of them will have your beautiful eyes.” He stated with a smile. Haze blushed. The eggs started to shake a little, making her gasp. “My poor babies are cold!” She exclaimed. She let out a small green flame to heat up the eggs. They stopped shaking, making Haze smile. Rubble stood up and kissed her on the cheek. “I’m going to find some more gems for our hoard.” Rubble stated before leaving the cave. She waved goodbye to her husband before going back to stare at her eggs. “I’m going to be the best mom ever.” Haze awoke to a loud bang. She looked around groggily. “I wasn’t asleep!” She exclaimed in the empty cave. She heard distant screaming from outside. It didn’t sound like the usual dragon fights, it sounded like genocide. It was cloudier than before, making everything seem dark. Haze peeked outside and gasped at what she saw. Large furry beast chasing down dragons. A few tried to fight back, only to get turned to stone or getting trapped in chains. In the sky there was a large blimp. A large white satyr stood at the blimp, laughing loudly. “I am the Storm King and you will bow to me!” He exclaimed, holding a giant staff. “And what if we don’t?” A dragon asked. The Storm King smirked. “I’ll make sure you do.” He stated while snapping his fingers. Dragon Lord Torch stomped across the ground, his eyes glowing white. He mouth was agape and he had a large chain wrapped around his neck. He looked very pale. The chains seemed to be flame proof. A few dragons gasped. “Mind control.” Haze mumbled. She ran back into the cave and looked around. She grabbed a large white cloth and placed her eggs in it. She tied the cloth around her neck. “I’ll get you three to safety my babies.” She whispered to the eggs. She left the cave, looking around. A dragon tried to fly away, only for a chain to wrap around her neck and pulled her down. Haze’s speed walk turned into a run. She dodged flames of the dragons that tried to attack the soldiers. Luckily they were very flammable. The ground cracked, causing lava to splash out. Haze held the eggs close to her chest. Lava could destroy the fragile shells. She watched a soldier takes someone’s eggs and through them against the ground, shattering them. “I need to get out of here.” Haze muttered while looking around. She spotted a cave that led to the outside of the Dragonlands. Haze started to run, dodging spewing lava and soldiers. A soldier jumped in front of her, causing her to stumble back. It let out a low pitch growl. “Stay back!” Haze exclaimed, cowering back. The creature held up a chain and started to swing it. Haze held the eggs close to her chest. The creature lunged the chain at her. She shielded her eggs and closed her eyes tightly. There was no impact, making her open her eyes. Rubble had blocked her, the chain wrapping around his throat. “Go, take the eggs and raise them.” Rubble choked out. Haze stood in place, tearing up. “I can’t leave you here!” Haze exclaimed. The creature started to pull out another chain. Rubble reached his hand out to touch her face. “I love you, now go and raise our kids.” He stated, tears dripping down his cheeks. Haze kissed him on the lips. “I love you too.” Haze said. The soldier tossed the chain, but she ducked and ran towards the cave. The creature let out a grunt and shrugged before tossing Rubble into a cage which got lifted into the blimp. Haze ran into the cave, getting absorbed in darkness. She could hear the screams of the dragons. Tears fell down her face as she continued to run. A light appeared from the end of the cave. She started to flap her wings, speeding up. She closed her eyes as light attacked her eyes. Haze landed in a grassy area. The grass was slightly burn around the entrance. She collapsed on the ground, letting out loud sobs. It was oddly sunny. Far too sunny for such a grim day. Haze stood up and looked at her eggs. They were so small and fragile. She wiped the tears from her face. “I’m going to give you three a nice, safe home.” Haze stated. She kissed the top of the eggs softly. She tightened the eggs around her neck. She gave one last look at the wall that covered the Dragonlands before leaving. Leaving her only home. Haze walked along a large field, looking around. She had been walking for an hour and found no living creatures besides a few bugs. Flying with the eggs would be to dangerous, they could hatch any day now. The wind could make them too cold and they could fall, their were too many dangers. The field looked way more beautiful than all of the burnt rocks and lava she saw constantly. “Is this what flowers smell like? They smell amazing!l” Haze exclaimed as she sniffed the air again. This smelled better than burning rock. Her smile turned into a frown. “I wish Rubble could see this, he would love this.” She said sadly. He might not want to see bright colors, but he would love to see her get all excited. She continued to walk, her scales flat against her head. This was the first time she had ever heard a bird chirp that wasn’t in distress and it sounded beautiful. She started to hum along with the birds, tapping her tail to the beat. Her ears perked up when she heard the sound of water. She looked to see a river. “If I follow the river, their might be a town!” Haze exclaimed happily. She looked at the eggs. “We can start a new home there.” She stated. She happily walked down the side of the stream. They would be safe in no time. Haze walked sleepily, her body slouching. She had followed the stream into a forest. Dark bags were under her eyes. She flapped her wings slightly to wake her up. She looked down at her eggs. “I don’t think you three would mind if your mommy takes a break.” Haze muttered. She sleepily walked over to a tree. She let in a deep breath and blew out a green flame onto the grass, burning it. Haze untied the eggs from around her neck and placed them carefully onto the ground. She opened her wings and laid down on the ground, covering the eggs with her wing. “Goodnight my sweethearts.” Haze whispered before closing her eyes. If she weren’t so tired, she would have noticed the rustle in the nearby bushes. Haze let out soft snores. She groggily opened her eyes when she felt something tugging at her wing. Did one of the eggs hatch? Her eyes widened when she saw a unicorn mars standing there. She had a dragon poaching symbol on her blood red uniform. She was holding the small purple egg. “PUT THAT DOWN!” Haze exclaimed. The unicorn looked at her with wide eyes. She started to run into the woods. Haze opened her wings and flew after her. She felt rage fill her body. She blasted fire at the unicorn. The mare dodge the attack and ran through a tunnel. It was to small for Haze to fit through. She flew over the tunnel and landed on the other side before the unicorn got out. The unicorn stumbled back when she saw Haze. “Give me back my baby!” Haze exclaimed with a growl. The unicorn had no fear in her eyes. She glanced at the river. It had a water fall at the end of it. “All dragons deserve to die!” The mare exclaimed before tossing the egg into the river. ”NO” Haze screamed. She ran after the egg, feeling herself tearing up. She watched in terror as the egg got submerged in water and fell off of the water fall. The egg was gone. There was no way the egg survived the fall, at the bottom of the waterfall their were a bunch of sharp rocks. Her baby was gone. She couldn’t go down to find it, it would be too risky. She would either have to leave her eggs alone to find one or risk dropping her eggs while flying. Her baby was really gone. Haze faced the poacher, her teeth grinding together and tears dripping down her face. Her blood was pumping with adrenaline. The poacher pulled out a knife, smirking. Without a word, Haze took in a deep breath and shot out a scorching green flame. It enclosed around the unicorn. She let out a blood curdling scream. Haze watched as the mares skin melted off. This felt satisfying. Soon all that was left were ashes. Haze walked away, tears still coating her cheeks. “My baby is gone my baby is gone.” Haze repeated to herself, approaching her other eggs. She picked the up and inspected them closely. The pink egg had a small crack on the top, but other than that they were both fine. She placed them into the cloth and tied them against her neck. She felt numb. She had lost her husband and a child in the span of twelve hours. She needed to get her children to safety. Two guards walked through a grassy forest, near a waterfall. One of the guards nudged his friend. “Is that an egg?” He asked. They looked to see a purple egg wedged between two rocks. He flew over to it and pulled it out. It looked undamaged. “The rocks broke it’s fall.” The unicorn guard stated. “Let’s take it to the Princess, she’ll know what to do.” The pegasus guard said. They both nodded there heads and left. Haze sat in a cave, holding her eggs in her hands. It had been a week since she left her home. She had found an empty cave near a town called Fillydelphia. A lot of dragons lived there. Once she got enough gems she would get a house there. She had heard that the Storm King left the Dragonlands and everything went back to normal. There was no point of going back, her husband was still gone. She looked up at the clear blue sky. “I just want a sign that my husband and kid are safe, please.” Haze muttered, looking at the sky. There was a loud bang, making her jump in surprise. A beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky. It wasn’t like a regular rainbow, it was rounded and shinier. Haze started in awe. She looked down when she felt her eggs shaking. They started to crack and chip apart. Two dragon hatchling popped out. A girl and a boy. The girl was pink with a brown underbelly. She had horns, but one was chipped a little. Her son was green with a purple underbelly. Haze stared at them, tears rolling down her cheeks. She held both of them close to her chest. “Everything is going to be perfectly fine.”
