All It Takes is the Turn of a Key

by Fallen_Stargazer

At the end of the day.

Twilight groaned a bit as she opened her eyes, once again seeing the members of Fairy Tail around her, though this time there was a much shorter person with them, wearing what looked like an elf's outfit. "hmm so this is the same unicorn as the first time?" he said, looking up a bit at the unicorn. "Yes Master Makarov." Lucy said with a smile then turned to Twilight. "This is our guild master. Makarov Dreyar." she said, gesturing to the old man. Makarov gave a nod and turned to Lucy. "Now then, can I see the key you used for the summoning?" he said, holding out his hand. She nodded and handed him the key, Makarov inspecting it closely, looking at the symbol on it and how it was the same color as twilight. He snapped his fingers, a magical seal appearing and covering over the key. Soon a long chain of symbols sprouted forth from the key, the spell coding of the key being shown as the guild members and Twilight watched the chain of magic fly around the room.

After a few moments a girl on the other side of the room gave a shout. "Ah here!" she shouted. "What is it Levy?" the blue haired girl adjusted her headband and magicked a pair of glasses onto her face as she looked at the spell programming. "right here." Levy pointed to a chain of complicated symbols and figures. The others moved over towards her as the part of the magic was held in place. "right here, the part for the other realm coordinates. This part isn't what it should be." levy said with a smile, pointing out the spot that she had seen when practically begging Lucy to be able to look at one of her keys' spell programming to help her learn more. Makarov and Lucy both looked at the spot in the spellwork, Makarov giving a sigh. "I see." he said, turning away and canceling out the viewing spell.

Twilight turned to Makarov and Lucy. "why did you stop spell? If you found the mistake in the spell, couldn't you just fix it so that it summons the correct unicorn instead of me?" Makarov exchanged glances with Lucy who gave a sad look and a nod, kneeling down a bit and giving Twilight a hug, catching the pony by surprise for a second. "The problem is that the part of the spell that is wrong is unchangeable. To do so would practically destroy the key, dooming that spirit to eternity in the void between realms." With this, Twilight finally pieced together the thoughts. "so you mean that the key is permanently linked to me, and to try and change it would doom me to endless darkness?" Lucy gave a sad nod, releasing Twilight from the hug. Twilight gave Lucy a soft smile. "magic is not always clear and simple. If I was brought here then there's no helping it." she said, levitating a napkin up to wipe at a tear that had been forming in the corner of lucy's eye.

After a few moments Natsu gave a smile and leaned over. "So that makes you one of our nakama then." at this Twilight tilted her head. "Nakama?" Lucy gave a small laugh. "It's a way of saying that your a friend now." at this Twilight brightened with a smile. "You all consider me a friend?" At this gray gave a smile. "of course. If you're one of Lucy's spirits technically, then you're a friend of ours. Another of her spirits was a guild member of ours for a long while. Though we didn't know he was a spirit at first." he remembered getting into a ton of fights with Loki who ended up being the golden key spirit Leo of the lion.

Twilight smiled then looked around at her new friends, noticing the guild was a bit less crowded. "Where did some of the people that were here earlier go?" she asked. Lucy looked around. "well some of the other guild members went on missions, others decided to head home for the day." Twilight blinked and looked at them. "how long has it been since I was brought here before?" Natsu leaned back and thought. "about an hour or so I think?" he said. Lucy smiled. "We had to wait for Master to return from a council meeting so that he could inspect the key." Twilight sat down on  her haunches, thinking. "hmm if what you said is true, then there is possibly a slight time difference in our worlds. Or maybe it's just the magic that brings me here is a bit off due to the wrong location in it's spell code." she said. Makarov nodded and smiled. "well either time here will fly by or the magic may sync up eventually who knows. For now, Lucy. Is there anything else you noticed while using that key?" Lucy blinked and thought for a bit, rubbing her chin then snapped her fingers. "oh! While using it, it doesn't feel like as much of a strain on my magical energy like when I use other keys." At this Twilight spoke up. "That may be due to me actually. Most unicorns have good stores of natural mana within them, the most trained unicorns able to keep up continuous spell use for several hours. However, my special talent," she said, pointing to her cutie mark. "is magic itself. My mentor says it's because I have a large store of mana inside me. I think she compared it to herself as the ocean, a trained unicorn as a large pond, and me as a small lake." she said, blushing a little when she realized she had bragged a little. Something she tried not to do when it came to her magic. Ever since the whole Trixie and Ursa Minor incident, she had learned it was ok to be confident in your abilities as long as you didn't go bragging and showboating around.

They all stared at Twilight with somewhat incredulous looks. "wait if your mentor compared herself to an ocean, then she must be one strong as heck unicorn." Natsu said with a smile, wishing he could fight such a strong magical creature. Twilight giggled and smiled. "oh no, my mentor isn't a unicorn. Remember the two alicorn princesses I told you about? My mentor is Princess Celestia, the one who raises the sun. She noticed my gift, as she called it, when I was just a little filly and took me under her wing." at this the guild mages' eyes widened even further. Not only were they talking to apparently a very powerful unicorn, but one that was the personal apprentice of what they figured to be that world's god like being.

After a few moments the front doors were pushed open, a woman with long red hair and a chest plate of armor walked in. "hmmm Master, welcome back from the council meeting. How did things g......" she stopped as she spotted Twilight sitting there with the others. Immediately her instincts kicked in as she summoned a sword with her magic and leapt forward. Just as she was a few feet from the unicorn, a large hand appeared and stopped her. Makarov gave a sigh. "Stop Erza. This creature isn't an enemy." At this Erza straightened her posture, giving the guild master a somewhat confused look while still seeming to maintain that air of deadly grace she carried herself with. Twilight was tense and almost cowering when she saw the sword carrying woman leap towards her, only to be stopped when the small human grew his hand to giant proportions. "Wha...? How...? Who...?" she said, her mind trying to process the situation.

Natsu, Gray, and Lucy all chuckled softly at Twilight's befuddled reaction. Makarov gave a smile as he turned to Twilight. "This woman is Erza Scarlet. One of our guild's strongest mages and fighters." Lucy gave a slight laugh. "Erza tends to get a bit overprotective when it comes to her friends and fellow guild members." As Makarov shrunk his hand back down with a snap, Natsu lunged forward. "Erza! Now that you're done with your mission let's fight. I know I'll win this time." Erza gave a chuckle and smirk switching out the sword for a large club that she used to knock Natsu away to the side like a fly. "always full of openings. Now then," she turned to Twilight. As they said, my name is Erza Scarlet." she said with a light bow. Twilight bowed her head as well. "A pleasure to meet you as well. My name is Twilight Sparkle."

After a few minutes of explanation from both Lucy and Makarov, Erza understood Twilight's situation. "I see. Well then welcome to Fairy Tail." she turned and went over to the large request board at the back of the guild to look for another mission. Gray then stood up and cracked his back, turning to Twilight and Lucy. "Didn't you say your world had a slightly different time than here? Maybe you ought to get back just in case it's been more than a long time rather than just a little while like last time." At this Twilight gasped and turned to Lucy with a worried look. Lucy smiled and nodded, taking out the key. "see you around sometime. And maybe next time we can visit your world." she said with a laugh. Twilight laughed as well, not taking her seriously since she figured the magic only worked one way with her. After a few moments she felt the blackness envelop her, though she wasn't as startled since she was expecting it this time.

----------------------------------------------------

Twilight then opened her eyes, smiling as she saw she was back in her library. She looked around a bit, then saw a panicked Spike run at her and hug her. "Twilight!" The unicorn mare was caught by surprise for a second before returning the hug. "What happened Twilight? You came in then all of a sudden just vanished. Were you magically kidnapped or something? Did you give em a good blast of magic and then escape?" Twilight gave a soft giggle and broke the hug. "No Spike, nothing like that. I'll explain it to you later, but first, I think I have a very interesting letter to write to Princess Celestia after today." she smiled and tousled the little dragon's spines, heading up the stairs to her study. Spike looked confused for a second but shrugged and smiled. When living with Twilight Sparkle, an element of Harmony and personal protoge of the Princess, things didn't always make sense.

Twilight smiled as she sat down at her desk, picking up a quill and piece of parchment with her magic, spreading out the parchment before narrating her letter as the quill began moving.

In Canterlot Castle, Princess Celestia sat in her private chambers, gently sipping a cup of tea as she prepared herself to lower the sun the last bit to make way for her sister to raise the moon. As she finished her cup, a small burst of flame appeared in front of her face. She smiled as she saw the seal on the scroll, unrolling it and reading the latest message from her protogè and her friends.

"Dear Princess Celestia,

Today I learned something very interesting about friendship. What can start out as an ordinary day can end with an exciting occurrence that can lead you to meet some very interesting people."

At this Celestia stopped and thought for a moment. 'People? That word hasn't been around for thousands of years. Where did Twilight Sparkle hear of it?' she shook it off for the moment and continued reading.

"People who can seem like an entirely different kind, yet be so much like you that you can see past their outer differences. Two things that seem worlds apart can sometimes find more in common than they thought. All it takes is the turn of a key.

Your Faithful Student,
Twilight Sparkle."

Upon finishing the letter, Princess Celestia had a slightly confused look on her face as she stepped out onto her balcony to finish lowering the sun, bringing an end to yet another peaceful but somewhat strange day in the land of Equestria.
