Training with the masters

Twilight studied intently from a spell book. “Twilight you know you don’t have to do this, right?” Spike said as he grabbed a large blanket from a closet.

“Of course I have to do this, I know how you feel about thunder. That’s why I’m casting a silencing on the library so you can’t hear anything.” Twilight said. Spike smiled.

“Thanks Twi.” He said greatfully. He felt something come up his throat and he let out a loud burp. A letter appeared and landed on the floor. He opened it and stared to read to himself.

”Dear Spike, please come to the Canterlot castle, I have some work for you to do. Sincerely, Princess Celestia.” Spike flipped over the scroll to see if there was anything else. A train ticket was on the back of the scroll. When there wasn’t anything, he rolled up the scroll and walked over to Twilight.

“I think I got the spell down.” Twilight said as her horn started to glow.

“There’s no need, Tia called me to Canterlot.” Spike said as he showed her the letter. Twilights face dropped.

“I was really looking forward to do this spell.” She said sadly.

“It’s okay, you can do it another day.” He said as he patted her back. “I need to go pack my stuff.” He said as he walked out the room. He went upstairs and grabbed his backpack. He put two Power ponies comics and Starry into the bag. At this moment Spike realized he only owned three items. He walked back downstairs and gave Twilight a hug.

“See ya later Twi, don’t go outside.” Spike said as he walked to the front door. Twilight playfully rolled her eyes.

“I know Spike, have fun!” Twilight said as she waved goodbye. Spike waved back and made his way to the train station. He looked up to see storm clouds covering the sky. The weather team had missed a rain shower when smoke covered Ponyville, so now they had to do a whole storm to make up the loss rain.

Spike arrived at the train station, greatful that he didn’t have to be here for the storm. The train station was empty, probably due to everyone wanting to stay inside to avoid getting wet. Spike looked up when he heard the train approaching the station. He entered the train to see that it was empty. He sat down on a soft seat and put his head back, closing his eyes.

It felt so peaceful to just relax, listening to the train hit the tracks. He almost fell asleep like that if it weren’t for a pony walking up to him.

“Ticket please.” The stallion said kindly as he held out his hoof. Spike dug through his bag and pulled out a wrinkled ticket. He handed it to the stallion, who tipped his head thankfully and walked away. Spike leaned onto the seat and closed his eyes again. For him, sleeping was never an easy task. Within an hour he would wake up from a nightmare which is why he usually avoided naps, but this just felt to relaxing to avoid.

Spike hadn’t noticed the train had stopped at his destination. “WE HAVE APPROACHED CANTERLOT!” The conducter shouted making Spikes eyes snap open. He looked around before quickly grabbing his backpack and exiting the train.

He watched the train speed away and he made his way to the castle. He walked around the castle and approached a tree covered in vines. Spike always hated going through all of the Royal Guards because every time he came to the castle, he would always have to go through a full body search. He gripped onto the vines and started to climb upwards.

Spikes claws gripped onto the side of the tree as he pulled himself up. Soon he reached the top of the tree. He could almost see all of Canterlot from there. Spike walked over to the edge of the large branch. The window across from him was open and he jumped through. He landed on the tiled floor with a thud. He had landed in one of the bedrooms in the castle. Spike got up and looked around to see that no one was there. He opened the door only to reveal Princess Celestia standing there.

“You don’t have to keep going through the window.” She said. Spike shrugged his shoulders.

“It’s more fun to climb than to walk through the front doors. I mean who wants to walk through doors?” Spike said. Celestia chuckled.

“I guess you’re right.” She said as they both walked down the hallway.

“Soooo.... why did you call me here?” Spike asked.

“Shining Armor told me about the letter you sent him. Starting today he will be training you how to use a sword.” Celestia said a she opened two large doors. Inside the room there were tackling dummies lined up. Spike broke out into a large grin.

“Thanks you so much!” Spike said happily as he took of his backpack and put it on the floor. Shining Armor walked out from behind one of the dummies and handed Spike a fake replica of a sword and a small, round, wooden shield.

“You’ll get a real sword and shield one you improve. Now stand in front of the dummy.” Shining Armor instructed as he pointed to a dummy. Spike nodded and walked over to it.

“Put your left leg back and your right arm forward.” Shining Armor said. He did as he was told and looked at him, waiting for his next instruction.

“Now swing the sword towards the dummy to strike.” He said. Spike swung his arm out and hit the dummy harshly with the sword, knocking it over. He looked over to Shining Armor and smiled brightly.

“Good now do that to the next one.”

Celestia and Shining Armor stared with there mouths gaped open. Stuffing had lied across the floor and multiple dummies were shredded to pieces.

“HOW DID YOU EVEN DO THIS, ITS BEEN THIRTY MINUTES AND ONE OF THE DUMMIES IS ON FIRE! YOU DIDN’T BREATH FIRE HOW DID THIS HAPPEN!?” Shining Armor shouted in disbelief as he looked around the room. Spike looked around sheepishly.

“Sorry, I guess I went a little overboard.” Spike said as he rubbed the back of his neck.

“No this is great! It shows that you learn a lot faster than most royal guards.” Celestia said with a smile. Spike blushed.

“Well dragons are made for hunting.” He responded. Suddenly the doors opened making everyone turn around.

“Sister it is time for my magic lessons.” Luna said as she walked into the room. She looked around the room and her eyes widened.

“What in Tartarus happened here?” She asked in surprise. Shining Armor sighed.

“We were giving Spike sword fighting lessons and this happened.” He said tiredly. Celestia’s ears perked up when an idea popped into her head.

“I have an idea! What if we combined Luna and Spike’s training! It would help them learn how to combat others. Besides, Spike is already way ahead for a beginner. It will be perfect!” She said excitedly as she clapped her hooves together.

“I don’t know Princess, don’t you think that a little to much I just think-“

“I’ll do it.” Spike said, cutting off Shining Armor. Celestia smiled.

“Excellent. Now Luna, don’t use all of your strength on him, he’s just a baby dragon. And Spike, don’t use fire on her.” Celestia said. They both nodded there heads.

Luna’s horn started to glow and Spike got into a defensive stance. Luna let out a beam of light from her horn and it shot towards Spike. He held the shield up, blocking the beam and barrel rolled over to Luna. He swung the sword at her, only to miss by Luna dodging the attack.

Luna teleported away, causing Spike to look around in confusion. He felt something hit his side, causing him to fall over. Luna stood over him, pointing her horn in his face. They maintained eye contact and the room fell silent.

“That was amazing!” Celestia shouted excitedly, making Spike and Luna break eye contact and looked at her. Luna got off of Spike and smiled with a slight blush.

“Thank you sister, that means so much to me.” She said with a smile.

“Thanks Tia.” Spike said. He was slightly disappointed that he didn’t win the fight. He looked down at the ground and kicked a piece of stuffing that was still on the floor.

“I’m gonna go get some water.” He mumbled out as he walked of the room. He walked down the long hallway in deep thought. ”If I can’t protect Twilight then I won’t be able to proctect others.” Spike thought to himself. He got snapped out of his thoughts when he heard Shining Armor calling his name.

“I noticed you looked sorta bummed when he left, what wrong?” He asked. Spike let out a sigh.

“I thought I would be able to beat Luna, but I failed.” He said sadly. Shining Armor looked taken aback.

“So what if you failed? That was awesome! That was your first lesson ever and you were better than most of the Royal Guards. That’s amazing!” Shining Armor said happily.

“I guess that’s true...” Spike said, smiling slightly. Shining Armor patted his back.

“Yeah, so don’t be to hard on yourself. You’ll get better over time.” He said encouragingly.

“Yeah and next time, I’ll win.”
