Sly Cooper: Family of Thieves

by Blackdrag-rose

Time: Asset Recovery

Once Tennessee was ready to get underway with their operation to get his cane back, and whatever else Bentley happened to come up with before actually taking out Toothpick, Bentley headed out in a disguise that he had Gilda swipe from one of the nearby stores, so he could blend in with the environment and locals. There were many things that they didn't know about the situation that they were in, despite what Tennessee had told them after Diz rescued him from the prison, and Bentley intended to use his new disguise to figure out what they needed to know, even though the first task they needed was to recover the stolen cane. Fortunately Bentley was able to walk out to part of the town and hid behind some crates, as it would be the perfect hiding spot for him to wait behind as he patiently waited for their foe to come out and reveal what he needed to know, but first he made sure that none of the guards were around the area before pulling up the communication line with the safe house. He waited for a few seconds, so the connection could be made, and when the line was up he saw Sly, his family, and the rest of the gang on the other side of his tablet, though he knew that they were all eager for him to inform them of what they were doing.

"Okay, as you all know our first order of business is getting Tennessee his guns back." Bentley stated, because while it was interesting that this particular Cooper Ancestor had connected his cane and his guns into a single form, something that might be difficult by modern standards, that didn't take away from the fact that they needed to get it back.

"Well, it's just the one gun now." Tennessee informed them, though at the same time that meant that the pair of gun-canes in the Vault had to be the original weapons he had been using and that the actual gun-cane that was the one that was associated with him was the one they were seeking, "I upgraded it, but yeah I need my shooting iron back."

"Agreed. Now, according to all my research, Toothpick closed this old gold mine several months ago, declaring it 'unsafe'." Bentley stated, to which an image appeared on the other screen, allowing the rest of the gang to know what he was talking about and what sort of door the mine had, "In fact, he's converted it to a storage facility for his stolen goods, including Tennessee's gun. We'll need to take measures with this job so as not to arouse suspicion. So by employing a masterful disguise, I'll tail Toothpick to the mine's entrance and mark it with a special homing beacon that Clockwerk and I have developed for this occasion. Murray, you'll follow Gilda and Derpy as they use the beacon to reach the entrance of the mine. Toothpick is sure to have secure the entrance so we'll need all of your... formidable skills to get it open. Then, once we have access, Tennessee can get in and get his gun back."

"Sounds like a plan Bentley." Gilda said, and the rest of the gang nodded their heads before the connection between them faded, which gave them time to get their things together for when the beacon was activated, thus allowing Bentley to keep an eye out for his target.

Fortunately for Bentley he didn't have to wait too long, as not a minute later Toothpick walked out into the open, without a single guard following him, and continued on his walk as he made motions that belonged to someone that belonged from this time period, while at the same time mumbling about how Tennessee managed to get away from the cell he put him in. Since it was clear that their target was distracted Bentley was able to tail him, while at the same time hiding behind the various boxes and crates that were in the area, as the gangster walked through the street of the town, heading right for the area that Bentley had informed the others about. It didn't take Toothpick long to reach the location of the mine, with one of the largest doors that Bentley had ever seen, including a smaller normal sized door that could only be opened by the nearby terminal, and Toothpick entered the code and slipped into his treasure vault, unaware that he had given away it's exact location to his enemies. As Bentley approached the terminal, however, he found out that there happened to be a defense mechanism of some kind, as large scorpions emerged from the nearby tunnels and marched towards his location, though he didn't have anything to worry about as Murray manned the large gun that was nearby, likely set up to deal with the scorpions before the cave was taken over, and started firing at some of the scorpions... and, just like Bentley predicted, both Gilda and Derpy were in the air as well, using their magic to combat some of the targets that Murray didn't focus on.

Tennessee, from watching what was going on in front of him, was able to determine why two of the future Coopers were skilled, because Gilda and Derpy, just like Diz before them, had access to interesting magical powers that he could have only read about in the Thievius Raccoonus, and even he could tell that the low powered wind and lightning blasts they were using were the tip of their full potential.

It wasn't long before Murray, Gilda, and Derpy knocked out the last of the scorpions, allowing Bentley to focus his attention on the terminal that was in front of him for a few minutes, where he hacked away and broke through the defenses that were arrayed against him, though once he accomplished his goal he beckoned to Murray. A few seconds later Murray charged at the large door in front of them and gripped the underside of the gate, where he lifted with all his strength and the others watched as he heaved the metallic door up into the air, opening it enough to give Tennessee and Sly some room to get into Toothpick's vault. Not even a moment later, with the two of them on the other side of the door, Murray closed the door and let the two Coopers do what they did best, and that was stealing whatever they were after, though in Sly's case it was taking back what had been stolen and Tennessee was merely getting his gun-cane back for his future heists. In the off chance that there wasn't another way out of the vault the four of them kept themselves hidden in the immediate area, just in case Toothpick came back out, but they were confident that Sly and Tennessee would be able to get their mission done with ease.

Sly and Tennessee landed on the floor of the vault not a few seconds after the door closed behind them, though at the same time Sly found something interesting, as right in front of the area that they had landed in was an elegant looking case that contained Tennessee's gun-cane.

"Hey! There's my gun!" Tennessee said, to which Sly nodded his head as he held up a hand, stopping his ancestor from opening the case as he looked for any future security features, but when he found none he moved out of the way and let Tennessee smash open the glass case, giving him the chance to snatch his cane from it, "That's right! The Kid is back in business!"

Sly stepped back for a moment as Tennessee demonstrated the power of his gun-cane by rapid firing at the vault door that was in front of them, where the locking mechanism unlocked and let the door swing open, granting them access to the rest of Toothpick's treasure vault. As they walked down the path in front of them the two of them found a laser floor in front of them, though while it was clear that Tennessee had no idea what sort of defense mechanism this was he did find the power source of the lasers and loosed a bullet at it, destroying it and allowing the lasers to power down. From there the two of them continued forward, where they found some decent sized spiders standing in the way and, since it appeared that there were enough explosives around, Tennessee used the t.n.t. barrels to blow up the spiders, by using a bullet to ignite the gunpowder inside each container. What followed next was them reaching another door that required one of Tennessee's personal skills, the Crackshot as he called it, and it allowed him to target multiple targets before firing a number of bullets in rapid succession, meaning a few seconds in reality, and he used his Crackshot to open the vault door that was blocking their path.

With the door opened Sly and Tennessee found some rails on the other side, where Tennessee jumped forward and used his Rail Slide technique to continue to the other side of the rails, and Sly showed his worth as a Cooper Thief by doing the same thing as he followed after his ancestor, who occasionally used his bullets to blow up some of the barrels behind some enemies and clear the path they were following. When they reached the end of the rails Tennessee immediately went to town on the guards that were in front of them, shooting them down and opening the way forward, though at the same time Sly used his cane and knocked around the spiders that apparently weren't what his ancestor was targeting, all while keeping track of what Tennessee was doing. It didn't take them long to find another door that required the Crackshot, and of course another rail rested behind it that the duo used to progress even further into Toothpick's vault, though as that happened Sly knew that their foe must have had a secret passage that only he knew about, as there was no way that Toothpick would be able to do all of these moves on his own. It didn't take them long to fight their way to another vault door, though on the rail track Tennessee had to use his gun-cane to open a smaller door and then one final vault door that allowed them to appear in the outskirts of the town, where the two of them smiled and headed into the town, while calling Bentley and informing him, and the others, that they were out of the treasure vault and that it was time for them to see what else they could do in regards to messing with Toothpick.

While on their way back to the safe house Bentley informed Sly that the two of them needed to tackle one more mission before they returned as well, to which Sly watched as Murray, Gilda, Derpy, and Tennessee headed back to the safe house while he headed to an area near a saloon... and, when he was in position, he used his binocucom and found that Bentley was still wearing his disguise, meaning that this had to be a delicate operation he had planned.

"Okay Bentley, what are we doing here?" Sly asked, as he decided to focus on the task at hand and not bring attention to the fact that his friend was still wearing his disguise at the moment, because he wanted to get this over with so they could finish Toothpick's operations and restore order to this time period.

"Toothpick's office is somewhere in the upper levels of this saloon." Bentley told him, knowing that Sly wanted to get this over with and he agreed with him, as the sooner they dealt with Toothpick the sooner they could figure out how Le Paradox managed to get his hands on the time machine and which ancestor was next on his list, "To find out what he's planning, our best bet is to plant a bug in said office. Needless to say, we must remain undetected. Conveniently, I've discovered that they're looking for a new bartender, so I'll just go on in and control the situation by introducing the patrons to my special homebrewed sarsaparilla."

"Homebrewed sarsaparilla?" Sly inquired, as that was something that he hadn't heard about before and was sure that it must have been something that Bentley and Penelope had been working on, before he shook his head and returned to the matter at hand, "So why do you need me?"

"A good question." Bentley replied, to which he let Sly's binocucom move targets until it was pointing at an open window that just so happened to be connected to the second floor of the saloon, though Sly already had some ideas as to what his objective was going to be, "You'll need to enter the saloon through that window and make your way to the ventilation system, while at the same time I'll be making sure that the goons on the first floor are so sugared up that they'll be seeing double until they crash... hard. Once you launch the RC Car into the vents, and I'm sure that the goons are knocked out, I'll guide the device to Toothpick's office "

"Sounds easy enough. I'll see you inside." Sly said, to which he put his binocucom away and headed for the window that Bentley had pointed out, though once he was in position he noticed his friend wheel up to the front door and head inside, where he did the same and stuck to the shadows so he could see what was going on down below.

When Sly entered the saloon he glanced down at the bar that Bentley was setting up shop in and watched in sheer amazement as his friend started his routine, as when one of the guards stepped up to the bar and demanded a drink Bentley sent one of his sarsaparilla, filled in the mug of this time period, down towards the guard in question. As it turned out there were some guards that actually wanted two mugs of the drink and even the occasional guard that wanted three at the same time, confirming Bentley's earlier comment about making sure that they were all sugared up and that all of them would crash hard. Once his friend was done with the guards, and some of them had crashed as he promised, Sly made his way through the upper area of the saloon and avoided the various obstacles that were in front of him, where he also found a point where he had to utilize the new disguise that Diz had given him, the jailbird attire, to move part of the path into position so he could move forward. It didn't take him long to reach the vent and deploy the RC Car, allowing Bentley, who headed elsewhere to avoid being detected, to steer it towards Toothpick's office, all while avoiding the various hazards that had been installed into the vents, all modern technology... and, just as he claimed, Bentley stopped the RC Car near the vent in Toothpick's office.

It was in that moment that he discovered Toothpick's plan, that the gangster was loading up all the gold that he had taken onto a train that would be taken back to the present day, allowing him to be worth billions in a matter of minutes, and that there was only one thing they needed to do to before they left town... and, as Bentley drove the RC Car back to Sly's position, the gang knew that Toothpick had to be referring to Tennessee's cane, though they also learned that when the gangster got angry he got large, a useful tip to be aware of for their operation.

When Sly and Bentley returned to the safe house, and started to go over the plan that Bentley was thinking of so they could topple Toothpick and restore order to this time period, they discovered that Tennessee had gone out to survey the area and tail their foe a little, just to see if he could find out anything else that might be useful to the gang... however, when he stopped and used his new binocucom, the gang wasn't ready for what the Cooper ancestor had found.

"That's not good." Tennessee said, though as he spoke he pressed the little part of the binocucom that linked it up to the safe house, something that had been explained to him once he had been handed the device, though the event that was unfolding was a grinning Toothpick standing next to two bound children, "It looks like Toothpick found himself some troublemakers... a boy and a girl by the looks of it."

"Sweet jumping jackrabbits! Those aren't any ordinary children!" Bentley replied, though at the same time the air in the safe house shifted, because the rest of the gang had seen what Tennessee was seeing and all of them were angry over who Toothpick was standing near, "Those are Elizabeth and Daniel Cooper... Sly and Carmelita's kids!"

"Wait, you mean they're family?!" Tennessee asked, though as he asked that his own anger rose as well, because he had come to understand that the gang that had come and saved him was his descendant, his family, and his friends coming to fix the problem that someone had created, but finding that the next generation was here, and that they were in danger, angered him.

"Yes, and you're the only one that can get there fast enough before something happens to them." Bentley informed him, as it seemed like Toothpick might be getting ready to put the kids in something that would either explode or roll off a cliff, but right now he wasn't willing to do anything to endanger them, "Sly, Murray, Carmelita, and I will take the van and meet you once you save them. Derpy, Gilda, and Diz will see if they can do anything to assist you in your venture."

Tennessee nodded and got underway immediately, as he didn't want anything to happen to Sly and Carmelita's kids, and he followed Toothpick into the canyon that the tunnel had lead to, where both of the kids were put into a stagecoach that started to move down the path that was in front of the driver. He used the rail nearby and followed the path that the driver was taking, using his Crackshot to take out all of the explosives that lined the path and firing at the guards that were trying to throw explosives at him, because they could easily target the stagecoach and he didn't want that to happen at all, especially when he considered who was in the vehicle. He had to do that a few more times, making sure to keep up with the stagecoach and protect it from harm, all while seeing that both of the kids seemed a little terrified of what was happening at the moment, not that he could blame them since they had been kidnapped from their own time and had been brought here to be used against their parents. Fortunately the stagecoach reached the end of the line and the driver was the first to go flying, though as that happened Tennessee moved in and forced open the door, where he carefully pulled both of the kids out and put them safely on the ground, before the tipping stagecoach fell over the edge and fell into the river beneath them.

"Wh... who are you, mister?" Elizabeth asked, as while she and Daniel were scared of what had happened, after being taken so suddenly, she wanted to be sure that they were safe and that this raccoon wasn't an enemy, despite the fact that he looked familiar.

"I'm Tennessee... Tennessee Kid Cooper." Tennessee replied, though at the same time he offered the kids a smile, as he was sure that the angry look on his face hadn't been helping the two of them, before he thought of something, "Come on, let's get you two back to your parents."

"That's not going to be possible for a while," Derpy said, to which she landed nearby and sighed, as it appeared that they had been tricked by their enemy and, for the first time in a long time, they had actually fallen for it without seeing it coming, "This was a trap... Toothpick's captured Sly and the others. Diz and Gilda have an idea how we're going to get them, and the van, back, and then we'll take care of Toothpick and figure out why you two are here."

Elizabeth and Daniel smiled when they saw their aunts and uncle drop down into the area and carry them, and their ancestor, back to the safe house, as it appeared that the three of them were enough to calm them down for now, but they wouldn't be alright until Sly, Carmelita, and the others were rescued... and then they would take great pleasure in tearing Toothpick's plans apart before heading after the next henchman that Le Paradox had hired for his war on the past, and the Coopers that he was targeting.
