Why I'm The Way I Am

Chapter 1

It's a beautiful day as Pear Butter is out at a birthday celebration with her parents that they threw for her. "Happy birthday, my little Pear Butter and Jelly," says Grandpear with a smile.

"Happy birthday, my little Sugar Cube," adds Pear Crumble.

"Awe, thanks," responds Pear Butter. "I'm so glad you're my parents!"

After several hours of just spending time together, Grandpear returns to work and Pear Crumble takes Pear Butter home. On the walk home, however, some rocks off a near by ledge slip out of place and come tumbling down the hill towards the two. Pear Crumble then looks up once she hears the noise and pushes her daughter out of the way of the stones. She then gets crushed by them herself. Pear Butter, in tears, runs off to find her father.

A few minutes later, she finds him and drags him to the ledge where her mother is. The two then break down in tears when they see her there, lifeless just as she was before. "Pear," says Grandpear, "she's dead, gone." She bursts into tears on his shoulder and he does her best to comfort her.

"But, but she can't be, no, no, no," cries Pear, her voice quivering. "No, no, no. No, no, no."

"I'm afraid so, honey bun," responds Grandpear.

The two then take Pear Crumble's lifeless body back to the farmhouse and bury it under the oldest pear tree on the property. The two then sit there and cry atop the freshly piled ground. "Why did it have to be her? Why?" cries Pear Butter. "It's not fair."

"I know it's not, dear, I know," says Grandpear as he holds her close to him and runs his hoof through her messy ponytail of a mane. A few moments later, the two go inside and sit down to dinner, but without Pear Crumble, it's not the same.

In the following days, this incident causes Grandpear to become more overprotective of his Pear Butter as she was the spitting image of her mother. Pear Butter, however, does not pick up on this and just thinks it's because she died and nothing more.

"Dad, stop," grumbles Pear Butter voicing her complaints. Nonetheless, he doesn't stop and continues to stay overprotective of her for the following months.

Two months after Pear Crumble's passing, Grandpear finally breaks down and tells Pear Butter the truth. "Honey, you wanna know why I'm so overprotective of you?"

"Yes, I've wanted to know for awhile now," responds Pear Butter.

"It's because you're the spitting image of your mother. You both had the bright orange curls, the light colored coat, the same beautiful aqua turquoise eyes. That's why I am so overprotective of you. It's because I can't help but see her face when I see yours." Grandpear breaks down into tears. "It's just hard for me, not having your mother around. I'm so sorry."

"Awe, dad," responds Pear Butter coming over and embracing him in a hug. "You still have me. You'll never lose me."

"I hope that's true," responds Grandpear. He then lets out a sigh and goes back out to work in the orchard. Pear Butter, now that he's gone, then sneaks away to see Bright Mack. All the while, she can't help but feel this is the worst time to be doing it behind his back, but when else is she supposed to do it after all.
