Chapter 1: Dystopian Ingress

Fandom slowly rolled out of the bush he landed on after he fell from the sky. Out of the sky, seriously couldn't this game just spawn him somewhere near bodies of water? Shaking the thoughts out of his head he brushed off the last bit of leaves off of himself.

"Never trusting this game again," Fandom groaned. He pulled one last twig out of his hair and began looking around his surroundings. "Shit this forest is scarier than the sky itself," cursed Fandom. He quickly turned around as the sound of twigs snapping caught his attention. Standing there was young girl. She was wearing a white bardot dress with a blue gem at the neck of her dress. Two fox ears were sticking out of her silky blonde hair. She stared back at Fandom with her brown eyes. "Um hi there," Fandom took a step forward only for the young girl to step back and draw her sword. 'Whoa, whoa calm down I didn't mean to scare you," said Fandom holding his hands up in surrender.

"Who are you, what are you doing here?" she growled.

"Well I don't know," answered Fandom.

"You don't know?" asked the girl.

"I mean, I fell out of the sky if that's the answer you're looking for," said Fandom. The girl looked above his head and gasped. "What?" asked Fandom. She looked back at him and lowered her sword.

"Are you, a player by any chance?" asked the girl.

"I mean I WAS dragged into my Nintendo switch by Master Hand so yes I suppose?" Fandom answered nervously.

"Master Hand?" asked the girl.

"Well Master Hands is this giant hand and...." Fandom began. But he was suddenly cut off by the girl.

"I know who he is, what I want to know is if you're part of the Subspace Empire," said the girl.

"You mean the Subspace Army?" corrected Fandom.

"No the Subspace Empire, the Subspace Army was before," said the girl.

"No, I didn't even know that the Subspace Army was revived," said Fandom. The girl grew silent and closed lowered her head. "Um miss?"

"Shh," she hushed. Fandom immediately stopped talking and listened. When no other sounds could be detected the girl sighed and returned her sword to her to her scabbard. "Looks like we're safe for now," said the girl. Fandom looked towards the girl and noticed that her glare was replaced by a warm smile. "Sorry about that, shouldn't have assumed you were an enemy," apologized the girl.

"It's fine," said Fandom.

"I'm Reiko nice to meet you," said the girl holding out her hand.

"Fandom," said Fandom shaking her hand.

"Hmm interesting name for a human," said Reiko.

"What?" asked Fandom.

"Sorry, guess I should've explained, I'm a Kitsune," said Reiko.

"I'm sorry a what?" asked Fandom.

"It means fox in Japanese," explained Reiko. "As for my name it means Gratitude or thankful child,"

'Well the more you learn right?" said Fandom.

"Aww such a cutie," Reiko giggled.

"Wait what?" Fandom yelped blushing.

"I'm joking," Reiko burst out laughing as she smacked him on the arm. Fandom stared at her as thoughts began flying through his head. Reiko wiped away a drop of tear as she caught her breath. At that moment, voices could be heard coming in their direction.

"You hear that?" asked one of the voices.

"It came from this way, let's check it out," said a second voice.

"Um Reiko I think someone's coming," said Fandom.

"What?" asked Reiko. Sure enough the voices grew louder as the footsteps came closer. "Shoot we can't stay here," said Reiko. "Come on we have to get out of here," said Reiko grabbing his hand.

'Wait what?" asked Fandom. She didn't bother answering as she began dragging him out of the forest as they ran. They didn't bother looking behind them and before he knew it they were out of the forest. Fandom looked examined his surroundings and saw that the hills and flowers still had their colors but was outdone by the purple light that shined down from the purple moon that hung in the sky. Dark clouds had covered the skies making the everything look gloomy. Reiko continued to drag Fandom down the hill towards a small village that appeared at the bottom. Once they reached the bottom, Reiko let go of his hand and led him into the village.

"Well now that we're safe I should probably take you to our leader," said Reiko.

"What?" asked Fandom.

"Just follow me," said Reiko. She began walking leaving Fandom no choice but to follow behind. As he walked through the village, he was greeted by multiple eyes from the residence. He was eventually led to a small building where two kitsune stood guard at the entrance.

"Reiko back so soon?" asked one of the guards.

"Yes and I brought a guest," answered Reiko.

"A human?!" gasped the second guard.

"Yes, but don't worry he's a player," said Reiko.

"A player, then that means.." stuttered the first guard.

"Yes, he could be the one," answered Reiko. Fandom looked at her with a confused look. Master Hand had said something similar that he was the chosen one. He didn't know what that meant but maybe he was finally going to get some answers. He continued to follow Reiko into the building and to a small room where a single kitsune sat across from them. Multiple kitsune sat around the room forming circle.

"Reiko you returned pretty early today," said the kitsune sitting across from them.

"Sir I may have found him," said Reiko.

"Found who?" asked one of the kitsune.

"The player we're looking for," answered Reiko. The kitsune sitting in the circle gasped. However their leader just nodded.

"Let me see him," he ordered. Reiko stepped out of the way revealing Fandom who was still standing behind her. The kitsune all gasped. 'This is player?' asked their leader.

"Yes, or I think he is," answered Reiko. Their leader nodded and looked at Fandom.

"Come closer will you," he said. Fandom looked at Reiko who smiled and nodded. Swallowing hard Fandom stepped forward and got to his knees. The leader stared at him with green eyes for at least 3 minutes before smiling. "Yes, it's no doubt you are the one we were looking for,"

"Excuse me?" asked Fandom.

"Oh please excuse my rudeness, I am Emperor Sakaki," said the kitsune. "It's an honor getting to meet the one from the legends,"

'I'm sorry what?' asked Fandom.

"Sir, he hasn't heard the full story," said Reiko.

"Ah I see, well then it makes sense that this young one is confused," said Sakaki.

"I'm sorry for being rude, but I'm only 17 sir," corrected Fandom.

"Well then a newborn!" gasped Sakaki.

"I beg your pardon?" asked Fandom.

"Oh right you haven't met our kind have you?" asked Reiko. Fandom shook his head. "Well this might sound surprising but our kind actually lives up to at least 1,000 year old, so that would make you a newborn from our perspective," said Reiko. Fandom stared at Reiko with a dumbfounded look on his face.

"Well putting all that aside, I suppose I should explain," said Sakaki. "However it IS a lot of information so I want to ask if you're ready,"

"What... oh uh yeah I'm ready," answered Fandom snapping back into reality.

"Alright, so before we get into any of this I should welcome you to Ingress," said Sakaki.

"Ingress?" asked Fandom. "Ingress, as in entry or entryway?"

"That's right, Ingress is also known as the gateway to dimensions," explained Sakaki. "It used to be a world filled with light, nature and beauty contaminated this world with life and everyday was filled with excitement and adventure,"

"But it didn't look like that, everything was dark and gloomy," said Fandom.

"That's because of Origin and the Subspace Empire," answered Sakaki.

"Origin?" asked Fandom.

"Origin is a terrible tyrant that aims to take Ingress for himself," explained Reiko.

"What why?' asked Fandom.

"I've mentioned just now that Ingress is also called the gateway to dimensions correct?" asked Sakaki. Fandom nodded. "That's part of the world's secret that we planned to have kept to ourselves,"

"There are large gates that are located here in Ingress that connects our world to many other dimensions, they were supposed to be locked so that nobody could come in or enter the other dimensions, but Origin found the keys that kept these gates closed and unlocked them," said Reiko.

"Origin wants to conquer many worlds as possible and he believes he can use Ingress's gates to do that, he just needs to take control of the gates and that way he can open and control them at his own free will allowing him to invade these worlds," explained Sakaki.

"And I assume he's already done that," said Fandom.

"He's built himself an army as well as convincing the villains of these worlds to sign a contract offering up an alliance with his cause," said Reiko.

"He's and his Subspace Empire has already annexed several worlds and has brought them under his control, but he doesn't plan to stop there," said Sakaki.

"He's going to continue attacking different worlds!?" gasped Fandom.

"We tried to stop him, but he's grown too powerful already, nobody can stop him," said a kitsune. Fandom looked down and clenched his fists. So many worlds has already fallen under the control of this evil tyrant and still that wasn't enough, he couldn't forgive such a monster to exist.

"But there's still hope, with you by our side we can surely stand up to Origin and his army," said Sakaki.

"But why me of all people?" asked Fandom.

"There was a legend of a player who defeated the Subspace Army many years ago," answered Sakaki.

"Wait, please wait I hate to interrupt but please wait," said Fandom.

"Is something the matter?" asked Sakaki.

"I'm afraid that you've made a misunderstanding, I didn't stop the Subspace Army, that was multiple video game characters that united under one cause to rebel against Tabuu," said Fandom.

"Yes it was indeed video game characters that stopped the Subspace Army," said Sakaki. "However a video game character can't control it's actions unless a player is the one giving it orders," Fandom stopped. He was right, sure Mario and his friends are the one that defeated Tabuu but it was HIM that was playing the game. He was the one controlling the characters. "It seems you understand now," said Sakaki.

"Yeah, but there were a lot of other players who played that game, why me?" asked Fandom.

"We don't know either, but you were lucky enough to be the one to save not just our world, but everyone else's as well, we just one thing," said Sakaki.

"What is it?" asked Fandom. Sakaki didn't respond but looked at him with a warm smile. Realizing what he wanted he looked at Reiko. She nodded. He looked down. He didn't know why he was chosen but he couldn't turn down Sakaki's request when this world was in trouble. This world and all the other worlds had been suffering from Origin's evil rule for too long, he couldn't just walk away knowing that these creatures were gonna have to wait another 100 years or so just to find another player to take his place. "Alright I'll do it," said Fandom. Sakaki smiled as the room erupted with cheers.

"Thank you," said Sakaki.

"So where do I begin?' asked Fandom.

"You came into this world without any knowledge of what you were doing, therefore I'll ask Reiko to show you the basics," said Sakaki. "Reiko I'm counting on you,"

"Yes sir," said Reiko.

"Oh and don't forget to give him his gift," said Sakai.

"Yes sir," said Reiko.

"Well then Fandom, everyone is counting on you," said Sakaki. Fandom saluted as he followed Reiko out. This was it. Either this was a dream come true or his worst nightmare. Whatever it is he was going to find out.
