Muffins Fix Everything

Chapter 1

“Come Away With Me! Be The Legend You Were Meant To Be!”

The Rainbooms began to bring their song to a close, and all around them applause filled the air. Spirits were high as close friends, classmates from years ago, and even complete strangers all joined in the festivities. But outside the cave, away from the party a blue-haired figure leaned against a rock.

A small sigh escaped from Flash Sentry's mouth as he stared off into the distance.

“Are you okay?” A voice asked from behind, causing Flash to nearly jump out of his skin. He spun around to see Ditzy Hooves standing there; one eye on him and the other looking somewhere off into the distance. In her hand was an open can of soda.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Just fine,” He hastily replied.

“Are you sure about that?” Asked Ditzy, both eyes momentarily straightening.

*sigh* “No,” said Flash reluctantly as he sat down beside a rock, “Honestly I’m not really sure how I feel right now.”

“Does it have anything to do with what you and Sunset were talking about earlier?” The blond girl took a seat next to her blue-haired companion. Flash blinked in confusion until he remembered their brief interaction earlier.

“How much of that did you hear?”

“Not much,” She replied, “But you looked kinda upset afterwards. Something about Twilight?”

Flash hung his head slightly.

"Yeah. You remember the other Twilight right? The one without glasses?"

"How could I forget?" replied Ditzy, a smile briefly crossing her face followed by a more serious look, "What about her?'

"Well, she and I... I don't know, maybe it was just a stupid crush, but it felt like there was something between us. I mean, I know this Twilight is a different person than the one I knew, but it's hard to separate the two. It's like... like..."

"Like no matter what you know is true, in your head you keep applying your old memories to this new person? And even though they don't feel the same way about you, you keep hoping that the same connection will grow between you two?"

It took Flash a moment to think of a response. For one thing, he couldn't remember ever hearing his wall-eyed companion say that many words all at once. In addition to that, she'd almost perfectly verbalized exactly what he'd been mulling over in his head.

"Umm. yeah," he said after a few seconds, "How...?"

"How did I know?" Ditzy leaned her head back against the boulder, gold eyes staring up at the starry canopy above, "Something kind of like that happened to me once."

Flash's head shot up. That was not the reply he was expecting.

"Really? What happened?" As soon as the words left his mouth he realized the incredibly personal nature of his question. He quickly added, "If you're okay talking about it I mean!"

Ditzy let out a small giggle.

"It's okay. I wouldn't have brought it up otherwise." She took a deep breath and began.

"It was towards the end of our sophomore year. I didn't have a lot of friends then so I spent most of my time alone. But then one day I met this guy at the library. He was really smart, and he didn't mind the eye thing!" she gestured at her face, "He said it was cool."

"What was his name?" asked Flash

"Time Turner, but I used to call him Doc."

"Time Turner, Time Turner... I don't think I know that name."

"He didn't go to our school, silly." Ditzy reached over and ruffled Flash's hair. "He went to Gallifrey High. But anyway, we had a lot of fun together. He was always taking me somewhere awesome and even if we didn't go anywhere it was exciting just hearing him talk. He knew about everything, and the way he described them it was like they were really there in front of you!"

"So what happened?"

"He had to go," She said sadly, "At the end of the summer his family moved back to Britain. We still talked for a couple of months but after a while we kinda lost contact."

She paused, eyes closed.

"Then, one day, completely by accident, I ran into this other guy. His name... was Time Turner. He didn't look the same, but it was like he was almost the same person! He was British, he was super smart, and he was always wearing this funny little bowtie. But no matter how similar he was, he would always be a different person than I remembered."

Both teens fell silent. The Rainbooms' music emanated from within the cave. After a few moments Flash turned to Ditzy.

"You know what their band needs?"

"What?"

"A theremin."

"PFFFT!" The blond girl nearly spit out her drink while stifling her laugh. After a couple of seconds she replied in a laughing tone, "Do you think maybe they need a saw player? Cause I know someone who'd be really good at that!"

The two shared a laugh, their previous somber tone forgotten. Ditzy's face took on a thoughtful appearance, then with a smile she stood up and held out her arm to Flash.

"You wanna dance?" She asked.

"Huh? Why?" He replied, slightly taken aback. Ditzy's query seemed to be coming straight out of the blue

"Anything's better than just sitting out here in the dark feeling sorry for ourselves," She said with a shrug, "It'll be fun!"

"Alright, but I think I might have a grass stain on my pants now," Flash said craning his neck back to try and see behind him.

"Aw, too bad..." Ditzy said. Suddenly her face brightened up, "Ooh, ooh! I know what'll help! I think there's still some muffins left on the desert table!"

"Muffins? How will that help?"

"Silly! Muffins fix everything!" She spun around and made her way back to the cave entrance, but just before she got there Flash called out.

"Hey, wait up!" He ran over to where Ditzy stood. "Thanks."

"Pfft. It was nothing." Seeing Flash's slightly nervous looking face she asked, "Is there something else."

"I was wondering, do you still want that dance?"

Ditzy's eyes opened, surprised.

"Sure!" Then she grinned, "But I also still want those muffins. Come on!"

Inside, another song started up and friends old and new joined in the festivities.
