Blazing

The sound of running hooves pounding on concrete echoed in her ears, her heartbeat echoing loudly amongst the constant rise and fall. She heard them calling out, voices hoarse from shed tears and constant sobs, but she wouldn't turn back.

She couldn't, there was nothing left for her here. Everything important to her had been taken, robbed from her life in one fell swoop never to return.

She could hear them as they gave chase. She'd never been a particularly fast pony. Many would have happily called her slow, a snail in pony form really. And maybe they were right. But none of that mattered anymore.

Her canary yellow wings unfurled from her sides, reaching their full wingspan as she took to the skies. It was an unfair advantage and she knew it; none of her pursuers possessed the ability of flight. Her former self would probably have descended immediately and apologized profusely for exercising such an unfair ability, but she couldn't be bothered.

As she soared across the skies her tears fell like rain. She couldn't help but think how proud her lover would be of her in this moment. How very happy she would be to see her blaze across the sky she had so loved at speeds that would have impressed even her, but the thought was nothing more than a bittersweet reminder.

The pain hit her again, renewed full force as regret and despair overtook her. In one cruel moment she had lost her beloved wife of four years and their young adoptive daughter. And as she carried on across the skies, a blazing trail never before seen, all she could wish was that the raging inferno that had claimed her Rainbow could have taken a butterfly in it's place.
