Chapter 49

Sunset had dosed back off when a sudden vibration caught her off guard and caused her to nearly drop her journal as she bolted upright. She actually wrote back? What if she tells me that she never wants to hear from me again? Sunset wondered, slowly opening the book, her palms becoming clammy as soon as she saw the all too familiar delicate writing on the page.

Wendigos? Could that be it? Is that what is causing all of this crap? She wondered although as her eyes continued to scan the page her thoughts turned away from the winter spirits and more toward the growing lump that was forming in her throat. She is glad I wrote to her? She's sending help? Everypony makes mistakes? Does that mean she forgives me? No, it can't....she's can't help...The portal is closed! She's just trying to keep up the good ruler facade.

Picking up her pen the teen managed to write out:

How can help come? The portal is closed! No one will be able to get back here for another three years!

To her amazement something almost instantly was written in response.

We'll try to figure out a way to get to you, you don't need to face these sorts of things alone.

Does she care? If she cared that much then why did she say what she did that night? Why did she say that I was a mistake? Sunset couldn't stop the tears that sprang into her eyes as she thought about that night, how Celestia had been so angry and had sent her away with an escort of guards. She had been so sure that she was being kicked out that night, though instead she had become basically a prisoner confined to her room, or would have if a well placed stun spell hadn't helped her to escape and run through the mirror.

“I see you got a response.” Luna commented as she handed a mug of coffee to Sunset before taking a seat on the chair arm “You doing okay? I know it must be hard for you to talk to her.”

She better have a good excuse why she hurt this poor girl so much. Princess or not, No one should feel the need to leave someone with so many issues that they nearly cry whenever they even think about you. Luna thought as she began to run a hand through the girl's red-gold hair.

“Yeah...it's just. I keep remembering everything that happened between us. Both the good and the bad and I don't know if she forgives me or not...or if what I done was unforgivable.” Sunset answered softly wiping away a stray tear “she could be coming with guards to arrest me for high treason for all I know.”

Luna sighed as she wordlessly removed the book from her lap, reading over everything that had been written, eyes narrowing slightly as she noticed a pattern in the words. Oh for the love of all things holy! Sunset said she was a thousand years old and yet she sounds as stiff as my sister did when we were teenagers!

“I think she's just bad with what she thinks and feels. Perhaps she is better with diplomatic relationships than personal?” Luna stated, eyes flicking over to the woman on the couch who was still sleeping “Trust me when I say that some people are better at faking appearances than they are at showing their real colors.”

“I'm going with you.”

Princess Celestia sighed as she glanced at the doorway while she added some more books to her saddlebags.

“I don't need a babysitter, sister.” the princess of the sun stated though she knew that she was fighting a loosing battle with Luna who sent her a look.

“I know this, Sister. However I implore that if it is winter spirits those of us who are old enough to remember what they are capable of. Besides, I have borne the elements and know thus what the effects is. Perhaps having someone who can offer counsel would help her out.”

Princess Celestia knew that she was fighting a losing battle and that Luna was probably right.

“Alright, but I warn you Sunset and I did not part on the best of terms so there will probably be some bitterness still built up from those years and you may not like what you hear.” the older of the two mares stated earning an eye roll.

“you really must learn to be more empathetic to other's feelings, dear sister.”

The Sun princess could only stare at the smaller alicorn who smirked slightly as she continued:

“I am the keeper of dreams and yours were hunted by that of a amber unicorn filly. What hath kept thee from trying to contact her? It is easy to see that Thee have missed her.”

“I lost my sister and my first student over the same, foolish reasoning. If it weren't for the fact that I knew that Twilight Sparkle would be the barer of the elements which were what I needed to free you I would have never taken on another personal student.” Celestia answered, hanging her head in shame.

Princess Luna responded by walking closer and nuzzling against her.

“Perhaps ye need to understand that there is more to you than just the crown. That is your biggest fault, hiding behind that imperial mask.”
